The home crowd will no doubt cast Andre Marriner as the Villain today, but penalty incident apart, he did well. I’ve already commented at half time about the penalty and the Mitrovic Red Card which he got right, I’ve talked about the difference between Mitrovic’s Endangering the Safety of an Opponent ‘stamping’ challenge as opposed to Sissoko’s Reckless ‘putting his foot in’ challenge. I’ve also commented on Darren Cann’s positive opening. The second half did not test the Referee as much as the first but none the less he maintained his threshold on Reckless as opposed to careless challenges with the showing of more yellow cards, for that he must be praised, he also kept his composure and he always looked calm despite the howling of the partisan home crowd. What i feel Andre needs to work on is his movement and positioning in and around the penalty area, he needs to show quicker feet and more acceleration to get that vital viewing angle, something sadly lacking with the penalty incident.Too often in this game he looked flat footed. But if any one in the stadium watches this game recorded at home, they will see things much more in the Referee’s favour, it was player discipline that was Newcastle’s downfall not the Referee. This was a Refereeing performance that showed much character, just that one thing to work on. Both Assistants did well, particularly on offside, no problems in this game, well done! Marc Perry was not at fault for the penalty and Darren Cann added a great ‘ball  in play’ decision for the goal. Fortunately the only major error today did not affect the direction in which today league points went!

Full Time SUMMARY TO FOLLOW

RH at 2015-08-29 14:36:17
Yellow CardColoccini shown a yellow card for a robust challenge on Coquelin, who has been on the receiving end of a lot today!

RH at 2015-08-29 14:31:40
The crowd are howling but Giroud’s challenge was fair!

RH at 2015-08-29 14:29:36
Five more minutes plus added time, will we see a a big finish by Newcastle? This is something the Match Officials need to be fully prepared for!

RH at 2015-08-29 14:27:44
Bellerin pulled up for a careless challenge in front of Darren Cann, would have looked better if the Assistant had flagged

RH at 2015-08-29 14:25:44
Well no sooner have i blogged that than Andre Marriner gets hit by the ball, he should not have been so central when teams attack using the 4-2-3-1 formation, it that a sign of mental fatigue?

RH at 2015-08-29 14:23:33
The prominence of the 4-2-3-1 formation in the Premier League this season has resulted Referees following play a steady pace through midfield and then having to hang back in the left channel/edge of the penalty area during sustained passages of attacking play, which makes it vital that the Referee shows quick feet and acceleration to get that all important viewing position for any penalty decisions

RH at 2015-08-29 14:20:00
A second corner to Arsenal, good to see that so far there hasn’t been much grappling between players at corners

RH at 2015-08-29 14:17:09
TV Replays showing that the ball was NOT over the touchline during the build up to the goal, a great decision from Darren Cann!

RH at 2015-08-29 14:16:03
The tempo has dropped at this stage of the game, but every free kick awarded gets a full reaction from the crowd!

RH at 2015-08-29 14:14:28

RH at 2015-08-29 14:14:01
Giroud just offside, but it was a close decision for Darren Cann!

RH at 2015-08-29 14:13:04
Arsenal are building slowly through midfield which will allow the Referee to easily track play, the danger is that as play approaches the penalty area that he moves quickly into position to get the best viewing angles, if he is left flat footed he will be in the best position to judge potential penalty calls

RH at 2015-08-29 14:09:02
Only now has the game got any width with Arsenal looking to exploit the man less, so Darren Cann will be actively involved in play as the action takes place close to him, Assistant Marc Perry still tracking play more centrally as Newcastle attack in the channels

RH at 2015-08-29 14:04:59
Collocini giving away a silly free kick, the crowd are howling but in all honestly the player should not have made the challenge, what more can the Referee do?

RH at 2015-08-29 14:02:28
Monreal on Thauvin nothing more than a free kick

RH at 2015-08-29 14:01:36
Some of the tweeters are saying that us Referee’s always stick together! interesting to note that BT Sports Robbie Savage agrees with me, and he was certainly never a ‘Referees man’ in his playing days!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:59:26
Great offside call by Marc Perry, the last thing the Referees needs is a controversial offside decision!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:58:28
The tweeter feed is busy, comments for and against Mitrovic’s red card, its all about opinions after all!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:56:55
Player discipline is key here, the Newcastle players in particular have got to harness this emotion into the energy to get back into the game! There too many players on a yellow card for them to go in too hard!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:55:56
GOAL!A Coloccini deflection in off the post, from a Oxlade Chamberlain shot puts Arsenal ahead!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:53:34
Yellow CardColback earns another yellow card as he is cautioned for something he said!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:52:45
Yellow CardYellow CardAnita  cautioned for halting Cazorla’s progress who then earns a yellow card himself for a similar offence

RH at 2015-08-29 13:48:58
The second half begins!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:45:01
Well there is so much to talk about here so best i just comment line by line
  • Good early intervention by Darren Cann,a good flag for careless challenge followed by a great flag for Sissoko’s challenge where he ‘put his foot in late’ this was Reckless no more
  •  Thauvin deliberately trips Bellerin inside the penalty area, a clear penalty, Andre Marriner was poorly placed and too far from the incident, as I’ve commented in this blog, Referees have got to actively pursue play in the final third to seek the best viewing angles, Andre didn’t do that here, its also worth noting that Assistant Marc Perry offered no input, however a TV replay shows that there were players partly obscuring his view
  • Correct decision for Red Card on Mitrovic, where as Sissoko ‘put his foot in’ Mitrovic clearly stamped on his opponent
  • All of the other yellow cards were well judged
Overall i feel that Andre has read player challenges well, however he is one paced in his movement for long periods and he needs to be ‘Hunting’ for viewing angles more and getting into better positions. Its not going to be an easy second half, there is very much everything to play for!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:33:07
Half Time

RH at 2015-08-29 13:32:58
Sanchez on Colback, nothing more than a careless challenge!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:31:11
2 minutes added time!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:30:42
I’m sure the Referee will be pleased to see no further incident as we get towards the break!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:28:14
As we approach half time Andre Marriner will know that he’s been through a hard half! Whilst he got the penalty call wrong, he’s read the Endangering the safety, Reckless challenges right! I’m with his reading of the Red card and yellow cards!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:25:37
It would be interesting to see another wide angle view of the penalty incident to see if Assistant Marc Perry could have given better support?

RH at 2015-08-29 13:23:07
For the present the tempo has slowed, but i get the feeling that it won’t take much for the red mist to descend again, the Match Officials cannot afford to lose their focus here!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:20:59

Refereeing at this level is all about controlling your own destiny and that means credibility of the getting the big calls right, and to get them right you’ve got to be in the correct position with a good viewing angle and correct proximity to play, this is the difference between the Clattenburgs. Atkinson’s. Oliver’s, Taylor’s and the rest!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:16:42
We’ve just seen an aerial view of the ‘non-penalty’ award. Its all about positioning! I’ve been saying this season that the best Referees at this level ‘Pursue the best viewing angles and around the penalty area!’ Andre was too laboured in his run in there and he allowed himself to become detached from the action, its no good relying on the Assistant, Just ask the Fourth Official Anthony Taylor, i know he would have placed himself in a position to see that offence and give the penalty!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:13:49
Yellow CardThauvin reckless on Coquellin, again its nailed on, when will they learn? Newcastle just cannot carry on like this, if they do then its only a matter of time before we see another Red Card!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:10:21
Having Refereed in front of a full St James park i know that the atmosphere will be more passionate than ever at he moment, they don’t know of course that Newcastle should have been awarded  a penalty! The Referee needs to stand tall here!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:08:02
Well what an interesting start! i have to say the difference for me between a Reckless challenge and  an Endangering the safety of an opponent challenge is the comparison of the Sissoko and Mitrovic challenges, the Referee has judged them both correctly!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:06:46
Another edge of the penalty area free kick awarded as Colback dives in!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:06:04
Yellow CardMbemba takes out Sanchez , nailed on yellow card! Newcastle need to keep their discipline  here!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:03:08
Red CardMitrovic off as he endangers the safety of an opponent with an over the top stamp on  Coquelin , that’s a good decision!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:01:05
Howard Webb confirming that a penalty should have given in his new TV role!

RH at 2015-08-29 13:00:15
Thauvin tangles with Bellerin trips him and no penalty given when it looked nailed on!

RH at 2015-08-29 12:55:30
We’ve said many times that Assistant Referee’s don’t support the Referees enough on infield offences, we can’t say that about Darren Cann so far today can we?

RH at 2015-08-29 12:53:26
It’s been a difficult start to season for Assistant Referees at Premier League level, both of our Assistants will be fully aware of the heightened expectation from them today and of the need not to make errors in Offside decision making that has created all of the wrong headlines, to Officiate at Premier League level is the pinnacle of our Domestic game and the personal qualities needed handling the pressure at this level is the a key factor in deciding who makes it and who falls by the wayside!

RH at 2015-08-29 12:52:02
Only five minutes in and already the Referee Assistant team work is much in evidence, great start!

RH at 2015-08-29 12:51:03
Yellow CardSissoko cautioned for a late challenge on Monreal, Darren Cann again supporting the Referee, and the offender can have no complaints with the yellow card!

RH at 2015-08-29 12:48:20
Darren Cann supporting the Referee with a flag there for a careless challenge by Mitrovic

RH at 2015-08-29 12:46:25
Andre Marriner is one of the games good guys, its good to see him back in Premier League action, let’s all hope that it goes well for him today!

RH at 2015-08-29 12:45:51
Our match Referee Andre Marriner gets us underway!

RH at 2015-08-29 12:42:18
Both teams are playing a 4-2-3-1 formation today, the home side playing Mitrovic upfront and the visitors Walcott, both players have pace, will the important offside decisions arise when these players chase balls played in through the channels?

RH at 2015-08-29 12:35:41
Today’s Match Referee is Andre Marriner. His Assistant Referees are Darren Cann and Marc Perry, The Fourth Official is Anthony Taylor

RH at 2015-08-29 12:32:22
