Game over – in summary:

  • The referee looked the part and moved well, although his narrow patrol-path is a cause for concern.
  • The referee issued 5 yellow cards, but there should definitely of being a 6th as Drogba got away with a very poor challenge. I cannot understand why he did not caution as this was a risk to his match control.

Full Time Game over – NCYFC pinch 3 points with some great finishing

Yellow CardSaunders is cautioned for delaying the restart of play

85

AH at 2016-07-17 23:49:35

GOAL! Game set and match as Lampard fires home from the edge of the penalty area.

78

AH at 2016-07-17 23:42:04

78 minutes and we have our first offside flag !

75

AH at 2016-07-17 23:41:13

15 to go – it would not surprise me if there is a second yellow card dismissal ….

73

AH at 2016-07-17 23:39:06

Yellow CardYellow CardThat’s better consistency from the referee as both Lopez and Cabrera are issued yellow cards, which once again begs the question why wasn’t Drogba cautioned at the start of the second half.

70

AH at 2016-07-17 23:35:22

Good spiriting once again as the referee makes a judgement from inside the penalty area – well done.

65

AH at 2016-07-17 23:29:49

Montreal are certainly back in the game as the full back Oduro fizzes a shot just wide, all more the reason for the match officials to remain vigilent and keep their standards, but it has not been a good start to the half for the referee.

60

AH at 2016-07-17 23:25:37

Yellow CardOntevero is correctly cautioned – but where is the consistency, Drogba is a very lucky man indeed !

59

AH at 2016-07-17 23:23:25

A further poor challenge by Drogba which was not penalised this time ! Poor refereeing.

56

AH at 2016-07-17 23:21:24

That was a poor challenge by Drogba against Iraola – his intent was clear – and I cannot understand why no caution has been issued- the referee needs to keep his focus

55

AH at 2016-07-17 23:18:56

GOAL! Game on as Shipp’s cross come shot ends up in the bottom left=hand corner of Saunder’s goal

51

AH at 2016-07-17 23:15:29

Yellow CardFor me, that is a well-timed a justified caution given to Hassuon for his reckless challenge against David Villa.  That was a good opportunity for the referee to assert his authority at the start of the second half – and he did well to take the opportunity.

46

AH at 2016-07-17 23:10:33

Just 5 penal offences in the first half – one inside the first minute of the second, a sign of things to come perhaps ?

45

AH at 2016-07-17 23:08:53

We are on the way at the start of the second half

Half Time

With just a few weeks to go to the start of the Football League in England, we will be keeping a very close eye on SG2, the professional referees who will be operating in the Championship from the start of next season – watch this space.

Half Time

Opinion here at You Are The Ref shares my concern in relation to the referee’s narrow positioning, but what do you think. Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @youaretheref

Half Time

So far – so good for the match officials, keeping out of the limelight and just intervening as and when required.  They should be very pleased with their performances so far, however I do have a minor concern with regard to the referee’s narrow patrol path and he should have taken further action when Pirola put his hand on the referees shoulder.

45+1

AH at 2016-07-17 22:52:14

GOAL! The ultimate sucker-punch just before half-time as Harrison doubles the lead for the league leaders

43

AH at 2016-07-17 22:48:29

Great positioning by the referee to detect a deflected ball and to correctly award the throw-in to the Home Team

40

AH at 2016-07-17 22:46:18

That was poor by Villa and Pirlo, attempting to influence the referee by intimidation, it was disappointing not to see the referee taking further action to prevent this.

38

AH at 2016-07-17 22:42:34

Goals can often be ‘trigger points’ in terms of increasing the temperature of the match, it’s important that the referee remains focused until half-time.

34

AH at 2016-07-17 22:40:16

GOAL! NCYFC’s David Villa opens the scoring against the run of play, 0-1 to the Away Team

34

AH at 2016-07-17 22:38:36

The low-foul count continues, 10 minutes to half-time and just 3 penal offences

30

AH at 2016-07-17 22:33:17

30 minutes gone and the name of the game for the referee is focus, focus, focus.  In a game where there are very few key decisions to be made (so far!), it’s essential that the referee and his team remain in touch with the game and do not become complacent.

Some interesting reading on our website at www.you-are-the-ref.com , including an excellent article by leading UK journalist Tim Vickery. Why not visit us at http://you-are-the-ref.com/tim-vickerys-column-no-hiding-place-referee/ and have a read.

17

AH at 2016-07-17 22:23:03

Commendable penalty area penetration by the referee as second phase play develops from the corner kick, he was well positioned to judge any challenge on the goal-keeper.

16

AH at 2016-07-17 22:21:20

Impressive spiriting by the referee as Montreal develop a fast full length of the pitch break

15

AH at 2016-07-17 22:19:23

15 minutes gone and just 2 penal offences so far – the refereeing team will settle for that ratio for the rest of the game I am sure !

10

AH at 2016-07-17 22:14:25

My first impression with regard to the referee’s positioning and movement is that he looks very athletic, but is his patrol path somewhat narrow?

8

AH at 2016-07-17 22:11:39

I do not have a problem with that at all – although some inside the game do !!!

AH at 2016-07-17 22:09:53

Did you notice 4th official Bourdeau giving a clear indication of the direction of the throw-in at the half-way line ….. interesting …..

3

AH at 2016-07-17 22:07:36

Drogba once again involved, laying claim to a possible penalty, but both Referee Villarreal and Assistant Nelson were not interested, and correctly so in my opinion

1

AH at 2016-07-17 22:05:33

Drogba almost opens the scoring in the very first minute ……

AH at 2016-07-17 22:04:09

Here we go – good luck to the match officials

AH at 2016-07-17 22:01:57
