Middlesbrough v Watford

RH at 2016-10-16 15:34:23

So the Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Referee fails to send off an offender for an obvious second cautionable offence
  • Questions posed regarding the Referees confidence
  • Really good first half hour is compromised by incorrect management of a key match decision
  • Game of poor quality

This was a game of poor quality that will be remembered for only one incident, that being Roger East’s failure to send off Barragan for holding Success during a promising attack having already been cautioned. Up until that point Roger East was doing really well but after that he compounded his mistake by cautioning Stuani for a similar offence which underlined his inconsistency. These actions underline Rogers fragile confidence at the moment and indicate that he may be bringing baggage from pervious games into his Refereeing. Both Assistants did well and as Watford won the game the failure to send off Barragan had no bearing on the final result

Full Time

Summary to follow

RH at 2016-10-16 15:22:43

Adam Nunn does well to flag for a push by Friend on Pereyra, as I said before, both Assistants have done well today!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:20:24

Holebas is very vocal on that non award of free kick for handball, he’ll need to be care he doesn’t get cautioned for that!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:18:21

Britos is rightly penalised for a careless challenge on Gaston!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:17:27

A minimum of six additional minutes to be played, which is greeted with a roar around the Riverside!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:14:57

Success goes to ground without anyone being near him and is promptly substituted!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:12:15

We’ve got more Premier League action on Refcam from week 8, later this afternoon at 4.00 pm in form Southampton entertain Sean Dyche’s hardworking Burnley on the South Coast. Then tomorrow night at 8.00 pm, we have one of the most attractive games of the season to date when Liverpool host Manchester United, this is a game with so much history and pedigree that it will be fascinating to see how the Match Officials control this one!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:10:54

There is plenty of effort out there, but this game is certainly no Premier League classic!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:08:41

Chambers goes to ground under minimal contact from Holebas on the edge of the penalty area and play is allowed to continue, would have been a soft one, I’m with the Referee there!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:05:56

Derek Eaton does well to see that Gomes failed to keep the ball in play and concedes a corner to Boro

RH at 2016-10-16 15:04:21

Yellow Cardde Roon earns a caution for Dissent, he was certainly giving Roger East the benefit of his opinion at that last head injury stoppage!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:02:42

Well there has ben talk of Assistants dropping Referees in it this weekend, not so in this game so far where Adam Nunn and Derek Eaton have done well!

RH at 2016-10-16 15:01:30

A clash of heads between Gaston and Deeney results in a break in play with a drop ball restart, fair enough!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:59:00

Barragan is substituted, at least that will take some pressure off the Referee!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:58:09

The frustration mounts from the home crowd as Boro show no signs of taking control of this game!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:55:41

Barragan lunges at Success getting nowhere near the ball, he should not be on the field of play and he is  just causing embarrassment, Roger East takes no action which just compounds that first half failure to send him off!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:53:16

Gibson all over Capoue at that last Boro corner definitely a free kick!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:52:02

Yellow CardAmrabat recklessly checks the Boro skipper Friend, rightly a caution!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:50:27

Another penalty appeal where Britos is alleged to have held Gaston, the Boro man makes a meal of it and the Referee is correct not to award a spot kick!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:48:29

Watford in no rush to take that free kick following a careless challenge by Foreshaw, the Referee will need to manage such tactics well!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:46:19

TV pictures confirming that the Foreshaw challenge on Success just before the goal was scored was a valid penalty claim!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:44:36

Derek Eaton rightly flagging that careless challenge by Britos

RH at 2016-10-16 14:43:05

Could have been a fortunate break for the Referee because in the build up to that goal Success went to ground in the penalty area after what looked to be contact with Foreshaw and Roger East clearly motioned no penalty!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:41:12

GOAL!Holebas breaks the deadlock for Watford!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:39:57

Boro are definitely pressing higher with three up front and its creating chances!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:38:43

Its a competitive opening to the second half!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:38:07

Gaston has gone to ground to ground and doesn’t look happy!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:36:59

Stuani catches Success, just a free kick in my view as the Boro player kept his eye on the ball and wasn’t aware that Success was in close attendance, good call!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:35:22

Amrabat gets a touch on the ball ahead of Negredo, Referee well placed rightly says no penalty!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:34:09

The Referee has got to put the first half behind him and apply himself in the manner that he did in the first half hour!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:31:56

The second half is underway!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:27:15

A really good opening half hour with everything going well in a game that was completely under his control, then for some reason known only to the Referee he fails to send off Barragan for committing an obvious second cautionable offence, choosing instead to offer a long lecture to the offender. I can only think that Roger East is experiencing a challenging season where his confidence is fragile and key match incidents can cause hesitancy and show just how fragile his confidence is at the moment. Because up that point he was doing really well.  I though that he read the Negredo penalty appeal was handled well and his involvement level was ideal. Unfortunately things haven’t looked the same since and a later caution for Stuani for a holding offence on Pereyra and stopping a promising attack underline the inconsistency that Roger East has demonstrated

RH at 2016-10-16 14:16:59

Half Time

RH at 2016-10-16 14:16:03

A minimum of one minute added time to be played!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:15:24

Gaston backs into Britos, the crowd don’t like it but the Referee is quite correct!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:13:10

Yellow CardGaston picks up a stupid caution for manhandling Behrami right under the nose of Roger East!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:11:06

We’ve got more Premier League action on Refcam from week 8, later this afternoon at 4.00 pm in form Southampton entertain Sean Dyche’s hardworking Burnley on the South Coast. Then tomorrow night at 8.00 pm, we have one of the most attractive games of the season to date when Liverpool host Manchester United, this is a game with so much history and pedigree that it will be fascinating to see how the Match Officials control this one!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:09:53

Yellow CardStuani rightly see’s yellow for holding Pereyra and stopping a promising attack, we’ve been here before in this game haven’t we? but Barragan was not punished for his second offence!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:07:40

Stuanui goes to ground under a flailing arm from Britos, nothing more than careless in my view!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:06:37

Roger East has experienced some difficult times this season and was really hoping that he could deliver a good performance this afternoon, but what ever happens from here, the failure to produce red will have proved costly!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:03:33

Oh dear, just when he was doing so well the Referee lets himself down as Barragan deliberately holds Success to stop a promising attack, a clear cautionable offence and Barragan should have been sent off!

RH at 2016-10-16 14:00:54

With a couple of things to comment on since, I recall earlier that the Referee backed off in an earlier Boro attack and got close to the active Assistant, he consequently had to turn in to get a decent view of the next phase of play, he needs to avoid doing that

RH at 2016-10-16 13:58:39

Deeney makes an ariel challenge making careless use of an arm, but it was not reckless and no caution required! Referee correct to settle for free kick only

RH at 2016-10-16 13:57:19

Amrabat handles but no penalty in my view as he was close to the ball and could not have done anything else!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:55:40

Negredo goes to ground in the penalty area and the Referee says nothing doing, both he and the defender are holding each other and his falling backwards just goes to confirm that the Referee got it spot on!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:52:03

Yellow CardBarragan earns the first caution of the game as he blocks a run by Success, that showed good awareness by the Referee!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:50:25

The Referee moved well there as Boro mounted that attack, Roger East does possess a good style of movement and running action

RH at 2016-10-16 13:47:42

There was a bit of close attentions at that Boro corner but no grappling!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:46:15

Roger East has judged his involvement level in this opening 15 minutes, no need to be all over it with the match tempo being steady!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:45:08

Gaston evades one challenge the Referee then intervenes as the second challenge grounds him!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:43:41

Friend clips Pereyra and rightly concedes a free kick!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:41:43

The Referee has rightly sought to manage the position of these early throw positions, I suspect as the game gets more competitive he’ll have more on his mind!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:39:19

I like that delayed whistle there as de Roon pushed his opponent and then raced away with the ball

RH at 2016-10-16 13:36:45

A good advantage played there by the Referee as Downing was felled in midfield!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:32:47

If you are watching the game on TV, Adam Nunn is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Derek Eaton is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2016-10-16 13:32:18

Good early offside by Derek Eaton as Deeney was onside in that opening attack!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:30:29

Our match Referee Roger East gets us underway!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:26:54

The teams and Match Officials have entered the field of play!

RH at 2016-10-16 13:21:52

The following is an extract from Jason Pettigroves excellent ‘Runners and Riders’ piece that can be found on the ‘You are the Ref’ website ahead of each weekend’s Premier League action!

Roger East: Middlesbrough v Watford

Assistants: A. Nunn and D. Eaton Fourth official: M. Oliver

East takes charge of Watford for the first time since opening day, a game against Southampton in which he sent of the Hornet’s Ben Watson for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

There should be plenty of those here with both sides this season looking to win games by playing the right way. On the deck, short, sharp passing movements.

It brings back memories of the glory days of both sides and if either can get close to a decent finish in the league and a good cup run, the supporters will be happy.

Aitor Karanka’s side are bound to come out of the blocks quicker so what little authority East seems to possess will need to be wielded firmly in the opening exchanges.

Today’s lunchtime Premier League action comes from the North East where Middlesbrough entertain Watford. Both of these teams will fancy their chances of taking something from this game and recent league form suggests that this will be an evenly matched contest!
