Full time, game over and a consummate professional performance by Mike and his team, the 2 cautions were the key and were well timed in the interests of match control. The referee was cool, calm and collected throughout – they delivered a great performance and emphasised what a good season Mike has had. Well done gents.
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:56:27
Congratulations from everyone here at You Are The Ref to Norwich City who will be in the Premiership next season.
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:55:24
It’s the icing on the cake of a great season ….
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:53:06
4 minutes additional time, it looks like Norwich are home and dry – I shall resist the temptation to blog any Delia Smith puns – but they have cooked up a great performance
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:48:25
Penal offence by Adomah, well spotted by Mike Dean – did you notice Simon Burt switch hands with his flag ready to signal if the referee did not – once again, great teamwork …
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:45:50
5 to go – I have little doubt that the match officials will be talking down the comms kits “keep focused, keep going ….”
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:40:54
10 to go, and with Norwich still very much in control, it’s likely that the frustrations of the Boro players well increase. Something for the refereeing team to be aware of perhaps
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:38:58
Mike’s presence in the centre-circle allowed him to monitor that extended tussle for the ball and correctly allowing play to continue – once again, good refereeing
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:36:29
It would appear that Norwich are going to ‘park the bus’ and protect what they have, and also bringing on Dorrans and Grabben as fresh legs for the last 15. Mike and his team will be wary of the difference that these changes can make.
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:30:13
Kike replaces Vossen as Boro increase their attacking options ….
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:28:34
This is great game management by the Refereeing team, recognising that the tempo is likely to increase even more and increasing their profile accordingly….
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:25:41
Top class Assistant Refereeing by Stuart Burt, Bamford clearly in an offside position, but not offending simply by being in that position – play on …..
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:23:47
Caution for Howson, good game management as the tempo of the game continues to rise
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:20:37
As predicted, Boro are making a fight of it – still very much game on, keep focused Gents …..
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:18:52
Simulation caution for Vossen and rightly so – he fell to the ground in attempt to win the penalty kick and Mike Dean was well positioned to make the judgement.
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:15:59
Mike Dean showing he is human after all – that should have been another corner-kick to Boro – goal-kick awarded
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:12:48
Neither Mike Dean or Stuart Burt fooled by Vossen’s extravagant fall to the ground – great teamwork …
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:09:20
It’s the old adage of 2-0 being a dangerous lead, I’ll make a bold prediction here, it would not surprise me if this game goes to extra-time …….
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:06:39
Here at You Are The Ref we believe that the first significant challenge of the second half should warrant a caution or the game could get way from Mike and his team, let’s see what happens.
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:06:16
Nsue replaces Whitehead for Boro …..

An honourable mention in this respect is also due to Anthony Taylor, who, in my opinion, is starting to mature as a Referee at Premiership, and it would appear that the PGMO back this viewpoint as he has received 29 Premier League appointments this season. He is my “one to watch” for season 15/16.
RCT at 2015-05-25 16:00:17
So, who gets your vote for the Referee of the Season in the Premier League, amongst the candidates are Clattenburg, Dean, Atkinson and Oliver. At the opposite end of the scale, which referee do you think is not worth his place for next season, and whilst we are on the subject, should any of the Football League referees be promoted to the Select group? Did the performances of Simon Hooper and Andy Madley on the play-off games provide an appropriate indication of their suitability?

Half time is a good time to watch the latest Ref Show at http://you-are-the-ref.com/yatr-tv/the-ref-show/ with the latest edition featuring You Are The Ref’s Keith Hackett and former Premiership Referee Mark Halsey, who is also part of our team. Alan Biggs, Keith and Mark discuss the Fair-Play League and also the performances of Kevin Friend and Michael Oliver on their recent games; will Michael progress to the Elite UEFA list next season?
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:51:06
Half-time and so far, so good for Mike Dean and his team. There could be an argument for a cautions for Clayton and Martin, but he chose to manage the situations, and this worked well for him, (so far). The team of match officials look calm and collected and are in total control, here’s to much of the same in the 2nd half.
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:48:01
Martin afforded the same leniency as Clayton – perhaps a caution at the next standout offence would be appropriate …
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:46:31
Excellent delayed free-kick award as Whittaker has his shirt-pulled and no advantage accrued.
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:44:42
Three minutes to go – keep the focus until half-time gents – it’s going well.
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:39:47
The neutral would like to see a goal for Boro before half-time, as a Match Official it makes little difference in a game of this importance …
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:38:55
Good intervention by Simon Long, that was a clear hand-ball offence by Bassong as he slam-dunked that one ….

2nd offence by Clayton, having already received a rebuke from Mike Dean – would you have issued a yellow card ?
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:33:03
30 gone and Just one offside intervention so far from the Assistant Referees, good low profile officiating, why get involved when you don’t need to ….
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:27:15
Stellar positioning from Mike Dean – squeezing play as players contest the ball close to the corner-flag in his ‘quarter’
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:24:39
20 minutes gone, Mike Dean is making this look like he is officiating a Sunday morning game the way he is relaxed, anyone would think there was £120 million at stake !
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:21:55
Good intervention by Mike dean, just recognising Clayton’s frustration – with a public rebuke being the appropriate course of action.
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:20:08
Goals are trigger points for changes in temperature – just keep it tight for 5 minutes …
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:18:48
Norwich double their lead – Redmond fires one low and hard to the keeper’s right – what a start for the East Anglian team
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:16:17
Definitely GAME ON …. the match officials won’t mind that at all – a proper game of football to control ….
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:15:14
Norwich heaven – Jerome opens the scoring …
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:12:49
So close for Norwich, and then for Boro – both strike the bar within a minute of each other – GAME ON !!!
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:07:54
5 minutes gone, a good steady start to the game for Mike and his team, nothing to report so far …
RCT at 2015-05-25 15:05:27

Here we go – good luck guys ……..
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:59:30
Why isn’t Eddie Smart (Reserve Assistant Referee) part of the red carpet presentations, massive shame for him ……
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:54:39
We wish Mike all the best for this afternoon’s game, along with his Assistant’s Stuart Burt and Simon Long, with Roger East (Fourth Official) and Eddie Smart (Reserve Assistant Referee) completing the team of 5 for the game.
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:53:36
He is having a stellar season, there can be little doubt that he is at the top of his game, and shows ability and confidence in equal measures. Some may say that occasionally his confidence oversteps the mark and turns into arrogance, but here at You Are The Ref, that is not our opinion and he is one of only two referees who should have been in the frame for this game, Mark Clattenburg being the alternative.
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:51:10
So, onto today’s game – the £120 million match – there is no bigger fixture on the calendar and there it was no surprise to hear that Mike Dean gets the nod today http://you-are-the-ref.com/mike-dean-lands-the-championship-play-off-final-the-120-million-game/.

I am recalling this to you, not out of any sense of personal gratification or to show-off, but for those of you who are up and coming referees, whether you are Level 8 of Level 1, work hard, aim high and who knows what you will achieve? I was nothing special as a match official, but I listened to advice and was professional in my approach, both on and off the field.
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:45:15
I recall with fond memories my two Wembley appointments, in the days of the Twin Towers and not the arch. I was very emotional on the first game and had to hold back the tears as a stood in the tunnel with my colleagues, but once the game got underway, I was fine. I relaxed much more on the second occasion, knowing that this was a farewell ‘thank you’ from the FA, took it all in and me and my family enjoyed both the match and the occasion.

On the subject of managing the game in the play-offs, there can be little doubt that referee Mark Haywood took this too far in the first-half of the semi-final first-leg between Chesterfield and Preston. One could be forgiven if you thought that Rochdale Hornets had taken the field against Hull Kingston Rovers instead, such was the intensity of the physical challenges. It reminded me of Leeds United v Chelsea in the 70s, Norman ‘bites you legs’ Hunter and Ron ‘Chopper’ Harris seeing who could inflict the most damage on Peter Osgood and Alan Clarke – thankfully the game has moved on since then !
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:39:11
Whilst we understand and appreciate that there is an expectation that the referee will “manage the game” on showpiece occasions, in our opinion both Stevens of Swindon and Beckford of Preston were fortunate not to receive first-half cautions, which in turn leads to the question, had Beckford been on a yellow card, would he has been able to influence the game as much as he did for the rest of the game? Overall though, Andy Madley and his team will be very pleased with their afternoon’s work.
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:37:10
In our opinion Andy Madley had the better of the 2 performances yesterday, he certainly looked the part and his penal offence judgement was commendable, although we do have a concern that on occasions he was too lenient.
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:35:29
What do you think of the Refereeing performances so far in the play-offs? How did you rate Simon Hooper’s performance on Saturday evening, certainly the non-award of the penalty to Southend during the second- half was contentious.
RCT at 2015-05-25 14:33:45
Welcome to our coverage from Wembley Stadium for THE most important game of the season, the Championship Play-Off Final between Middlesbrough and Norwich
