Thank you for your company this evening enjoy the rest of your week.

Although this was not a difficult game for Anthony Taylor to referee there are certain aspects in the game that can enhance your performance, I felt that Anthony's recognition of careless and reckless challenges was inconsistent, showing a total of 4 yellow cards where I felt that he could have at least manage 2 ie A15 and A5 where I felt they were careless challenges. Also his positional sense and the reading of play using dead ball situations to give him that optimal viewing angle which lead to him missing a clear holding offence and should have resulted in a penalty to Arsenal. I also felt he could have improved on his viewing angle on the dropping zone again using the dead ball situation. This is about being constructive and improving your performances, on a positive note Although the players behaved themselves Anthony's control was never in doubt and I did like the way he managed the players by engaging with the players by explaining to them why he had given certain decisions. He also displayed a good level of fitness, he was well supported by his assistants Aiden Holmes and Adam Nunn.

Obviously Arsenal will be the happier team coming away with 3 points sending Middlesbrough to another home defeat and nearer relegation. It's not a happy time in the North East at present.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:55:21

Excellent to see Sanchez go to the travelling away fans and make a young boy very happy by giving him his shirt, it shows that the players care on how much money the fans spend on watching their heros. Well done Sanchez.

Full Time

MH at 2017-04-17 21:52:02

Good flag by Adam Nunn to indicate a free kick to Arsenal after a challenge by M37.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:49:21

A minimum of 4 minutes added time.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:47:27

Substitution for Arsenal, A34 ON, A7 OFF, A24 ON, A11 OFF.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:45:15

Correct free kick given to Boro for hand ball.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:42:42

Off side given by Adam Nunn.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:41:34

Good to see referee play an advantage and then go back and caution the Boro player M29.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:39:36

Yellow CardM29 for a reckless challenge correctly given.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:38:49

I would like to see Anthony reading play a bit better by getting into the dropping zone to monitor 9 and 5 situations. He is being lazy on occasions and viewing from a forward angle instead of a side angle and not using the dead ball situation to get that ultimate viewing angle.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:35:51

Substitution for Boro, M14 OFF, M29 ON.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:33:29

I would just like to see Anthony squeezing play a bit better.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:31:21

Third time lucky M37 is fouled free kick correctly given.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:29:41

Leading upto the Arsenal goal M37 looking for a free kick but looked like he went down to easy.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:28:28

GOAL!A11 Ozal.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:27:33

M37 makes an immediate impact, looking for a penalty nothing doing well done Anthony.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:26:09

Substitution for Boro. M21 OFF, M37 ON.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:25:20

When the intensity rises you have to slow the game down, which in refereeing terms is tempo management otherwise if you don't do this the game can drift away from you thus threatening your control.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:23:04

That looked a foul on A15, you need to give those.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:22:15

Correct foul given to Arsenal.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:21:00

Good save by the Boro keeper.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:20:08

Once again better positioning by Anthony at the taking of a corner.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:19:17

Great chance for Boro to make it two one, great save back Cech.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:18:26

Correct free kick given against A18.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:17:37

A few niggles creeping into the game as the intensity rises' Anthony will have To be aware of what is going on around him and to keep his gaze vision on the players. He will also be communicating to his collegues to help him in this matter.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:15:03

Correct free kick to Arsenal if he played advantage it would only be possetional.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:11:49

Good to see Anthony talk with M21 after his show of dissent at not getting a free kick.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:10:10

This is where it is important for Anthony that his concentration levels are at a high because when a team equalises the intensity goes up. Good advantage played by Anthony after a foul by A6. Will he speak to the player when the ball goes out of play. He needs to....

MH at 2017-04-17 21:08:09

Brilliant finish by M10.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:07:05

GOAL!M10. Game on......

MH at 2017-04-17 21:06:26

Correct foul given to Arsenal.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:05:20

Heavy rain at the Riverside will make it difficult for Anthony regarding challenges.

MH at 2017-04-17 21:02:03

Middlesbrough to get us underway.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:55:11

All the talk at half time will be about the penalty that Arsenal should have been awarded for a holding offence by Middlesbrough defender Ayala on Arsenals Giroud. As a present day referee it's about getting the big key decisions correct and unfortunately for Anthony he got this wrong due to poor positioning at the taking of the corner as described in the earlier blog. Also in my pre match summery I spoke about recognition of careless, reckless and reckless with excessive force challenges and unfortunately in my opinion we have seen inconsistencies in Anthony's first half performance regarding challenges. He has to gather his thoughts at half time and come out fully focused for the second half.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:47:26

Half Time

MH at 2017-04-17 20:46:20

Another off side given by Aiden Holmes.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:45:37

A minimum of 2 minutes added time.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:44:34

Cautions A5 for a high boot as I say again he lets off A8 for a reckless challenge.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:43:18

Yellow CardA5, for a high boot. Sorry Anthony could have managed that.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:42:28

GOAL! Excelent free kick by Sanchez A7.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:41:26

Free kick given to Arsenal after a foul by M8 correctly given.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:40:23

Free kick given to Arsenal after a foul by M14, careless challenge correct.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:39:30

Poor challenge by A8 when you think that A15 was cautioned for a far lesser challenge in the 3rd minute, A8 very fortunate to escape a caution. Exactly what I mentioned in my pre match regarding inconsistency with challenges.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:36:36

Good to see Anthony keep his gaze vision when players are on the floor and the ball is going away.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:34:50

I would like to see Anthony get a little bit closer to play when giving decisions.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:32:46

Pleasing to see Anthony managing the players by engaging with them, it is so important. Players like referees who talk to them.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:31:29

Assistant Aiden Holmes upsets the home fans by giving a goal kick instead of a corner which looked correct.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:30:33

Anthony's position at the latest corner was where he should have been for the corner that lead to the holding offence.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:29:17

Anthony keeping a central path of control at present.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:26:46

Correct free kick given to Boro.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:26:08

For young referees it's always important to be on the move not static from set plays, ie corners and free kicks.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:23:44

Clear offside given by Aiden Holmes.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:23:01

Arsenal unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty after a holding offence by M4 on A12 from a corner kick. I ask myself why has Anthony not seen the holding offence and you have to look at his positioning at the corner kick which was at the far end of the penalty area at the back of all the players, that's why he has missed that offence. He should be more central on the edge of the d then he would have seen that offence. Where he was he was looking through a whole buch of players and it was impossible for him to see that incident.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:17:40

Substitution for Middlesbrough M3 ON, M2 OFF

MH at 2017-04-17 20:15:14

A busy first 15 minutes for Anthony.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:14:20

M2 receiving treatment.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:13:39

This shows that he is fully focused and will grow in confidence.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:12:57

It's pleasing to see Anthony picking up the small fouls.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:11:43

2 early cautions, these players will have to watch their future challenges.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:10:37

Looks like we are in for a pulsating game.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:09:54

It's always goodness t stamp your authority early on in the game that doesn't mean it has to be a caution. a public rebuke has the same effect.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:08:15

Yellow CardM7  cautioned for a reckless challenge on A11. Now that is a reckless challenge and a challenge you cannot manage.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:06:30

3 minutes into the game we have our first caution, Anthony has now set his stall out with those kind of challenges, as I said in my pre match about recognition of challenges, I felt that was a challenge that Anthony could have managed by taking the player out and calming him down and talking to him.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:04:11

Yellow CardA15, caution for reckless challenge.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:02:18

First free kick to Arsenal correctly given after a foul by M8.

MH at 2017-04-17 20:00:49

We have a change of assistant, Stuart Burt has cried off and Aiden Holmes has replaced him.

Arsenal to get us underway.

MH at 2017-04-17 19:56:08

The teams are in the tunnel.

MH at 2017-04-17 19:52:14

Kick off in 8 minutes.

Coming into this match Anthony has refereed 35 games, showing a total of 137 yellow cards and 4 red cards. Anthony will be assisted by Stuart Burt ( technical side), Adam Nunn and 4th official Kevin Friend. Good luck to Anthony and his team.

MH at 2017-04-17 19:42:51

Tonight's referee is Anthony Taylor who is a good referee and on the whole has had a decent season. To become England's number 1 in my opinion he would have to improve on his recognition of careless, reckless and reckless with excessive force challenges. I reported on his first game of the season West Ham V Chelsae and recently Liverpool V Everton, this is a flaw in his game and as a referee you never stop learning but to be fair to Anthony he is not alone with inconsistencies regarding challenges resulting in players sent off when perhaps they shouldn't have been and players not sent off when the should have been, which I put down to lack of quality coaching at the top level. Let's take a look at law regarding challenges,

CARELESS is when a player shows lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed.

RECKLESS is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or conciquences for, an opponent and must be cautioned.

RECKLESS USING EXCESSIVE FORCE is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off.

Also if we look at serious foul play a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality is punishable by a sending off.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, the side or from behind using one or both legs with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

Good evening all and welcome to this evenings ref cam as Middlesbrough host Arsenal. This is a must win game for Middlesbrough as they fight to stay in the Premier League. Their problem has been scoring goals, the Boro fans will hope the drought will end tonight. While Arsenal will be under enormous pressure to get a result, and Arsen Wenger and his team receiving strong criticism for a run of poor results and 10 points away from Champions League qualification. This is unthinkable if  Arsenal do not qualify in Arsen's 20 year reign.
