Good night and thanks for your company – join us again tomorrow here at ‘You Are The Ref’
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:34:07
Here at You Are The Ref we hope to see Sandro Ricci be given another game, subject to the progress of his own nation. He could be a victim of Neymars skills, muscled out by the Samba Army…..Smooth Brazillians blend beautifully to brew a top show as Germans progress
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:33:05
Ref Cam’s view is the referee and his team have had a commendable game. Not only has the referee controlled the game and used his cards wisely, he has a ‘presence’ which is key at the top level. A performance matching the earlier displays of Mark Gieger and Howard Webb.
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:28:16
The referee is STILL moving well …… well positioned to make key judgements …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:25:43
5 minutes to go, 3 things to concentrate on, focus, focus and focus …….
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:22:42
More quality decisions by the Assistant Referees, one offside and one penal offence … well done guys, you’re matching the bosses standards ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:20:46
Two yellows in four games for Germans. What is behind this relative discipline? Is it a desire not to have player’s suspended for the later games ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:17:49
Good to see the referee continuing to apply law accurately with the justified caution of Germany #16
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:15:09
Laws of the game state that play should be continuous in extra-time, but good to see the referee applying a degree of common sense ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:13:28
Sports science shows us that refs run significantly greater distances in matches than the most active player but we have yet to see a ref go down with cramp. Terrific testimony to their preparation and fitness going into this tournament ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:07:40
A regulation offside decision for the Assistant, but he still needed to be focussed ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:03:27
The referee was keen to keep play going in those later stages of normal time and perhaps risked his excellent control that he had worked so hard to achieve. It will be interesting to see how he carries his standards into the remained of the game as Algeria will now have to press forward even more …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 23:00:53
The referee may have to change his game plan as Algeria will have to attack even more …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:59:51
That goal changes things for the referee ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:55:50
So, this now becomes a new game, 15-minutes each-way, make sure any physical tiredness doesn’t turn into mental tiredness ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:51:49
Extra-time, time to re-focus …….
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:48:29
Would you have applied the advantage clause to Germany in that situation ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:46:45
We would have like to have seen the fourth official controlling the Algerian coach ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:44:16
The referee needs to control this restart ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:41:45
5 minutes to go, important that the focus is on the next 5 minutes, plus the additional time, perhaps leaving something in the tank for the likelihood of 30 more minutes ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:37:44
Great save, and did you notice the penalty area penetration by the referee for the 2nd phase of play following the save ….. top-class
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:30:58
Referee well positioned, again, to decide that no penal offence had been committed
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:26:36
20 minutes to go, the refereeing team will be thinking just need to keep this going until the end of normal time, or does the mind-set already turn to an additional 30 minutes, plus penalties ……..
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:23:53
Great man-management of Algeria 5, calm, collected, eye-to-eye with the player, allowing him his viewpoint without ever losing control …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:19:27
With the Germany pressure increasing, it’s key for the refereeing team to stay focused, which they are doing well. Important for the near-side Assistant Referee to maintain his concentration as he is largely ‘inactive’ …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:16:43
Not many opportunities to apply the advantage clause, but the referee did well to do so then …
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:14:42
You can also check out the ground breaking analysis from MLS supremo Paul Rejer in his commentary on Mark Geiger’s performance on the earlier game today ….
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:11:54
Once again the referee well positioned to detect the save by the Algerian goal-keeper ….

RCT at 2014-06-30 22:09:36
Would you have cautioned for that penal offence against Germany #7 …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:08:22
Just a comment on the referee’s positioning and movement. Without being ‘over-athletic’, he reads the game so well and spots patterns of play, meaning he is invariably well placed to make accurate penal offence and restart decisions. An object lesson for up and coming referees …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 22:01:26
Here we go for a key 10-15 minutes of the game, time to keep a tight reign on proceedings, perhaps an early caution or two, should the opportunities arise, could be in the referee’s game plan ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:56:25
But, as always, that’s the “easy” half completed ……..
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:55:52
If the art of refereeing is making top-level games look easy, then Sandro Ricci is painting a good canvas …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:53:03
At half-time, when the game is going so well, what does the referee say to his team in the dressing room ? Be mindful of the possible frustration of the German team which could rise to an increase in ‘temperature’ of the game …
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:46:58
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:46:23
Half-time summary – a good solid refereeing team performance. With the one exception of a poor early offside flag, the decisions have been accurate. Good penal offence recognition and man-management of the players. Great caution just before the interval. More in the second half please Mr. Referee.
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:43:26
The referee has taken his opportunity to assert his authority just before the half-time interval – well done …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:42:35
Justified and well-timed caution for Algeria #3, reckless challenge worthy of a yellow card
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:41:16
Because the referee is performing well, the key match control aspects of player communication, consistency and communication are coming naturally to him ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:35:52
Now is the time to focus. With the game going well and under his control, there can be no room for complacency, not that this referee gives the impression that this will happen ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:34:28
Another good offside decision ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:32:50
Mmmmmm – why no spray ????
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:32:16
Great positioning to recognise the penal offence by Germany #19 – well done ref !!!
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:27:05
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:26:39
Holding in the penalty area pre-corner is becoming too common place in today’s game at all levels – what would you do to combat this ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:23:20
A quarter of the game gone, so far, so good.
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:20:36
The referee needs to be aware that Germany’s frustrations will increase as Algeria keep matching them – he is looking confident and aware that this may happen ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:17:38
Great call by the far side Assistant Referee – a game changing correct decision to disallow the goal for offside
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:15:40
One or two technical issues for the Assistants, they just need to be sharper ……..
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:15:08
15 minutes gone, accurate penal offence recognition by the referee, he needs to be mindful of a possible increase in intensity …..
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:12:17
Good calming ‘body language by the referee- palms down – calming down Algeria #3 after his challenge
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:10:27
Can you see how the far side Assistant Referee is sometimes ‘walking’ as play develops – we would prefer to see him moving sideways in a ‘crabbing’ style, facing play ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:07:55
When you are refereeing, does the time of the match effect your decision making in terms of issuing cautions ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:06:43
Possible caution for Algeria #22 ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:04:43
Did the Assistant review the ‘virtual replay’ in his head before indicating, we think not …….
RCT at 2014-06-30 21:03:34
An early error by the Assistant Referee – did his flag go up too early ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:59:47
Wherever in the world you are watching the game, enjoy ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:56:03
Algeria are very much the underdogs – but with this tournament, who knows ?
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:53:31
Sandro Ricci, 39 and from Brazil, will oversee the match this evening between Germany and Algeria. The referee from the host country has already officiated France-Honduras and Germany-Ghana at this tournament. In his career so far, he has been in charge of four matches at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2013 and two at the FIFA Club World Cup of the same year, including the final between Bayern Munich and Raja Casablanca.
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:52:37
Welcome to Porto Alegre for Match 54 of the 2014 World Cup ……
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:51:50
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:50:36
Should we just allow the medical team access to the players, and, if so, how would you monitor this? We would probably suggest that this would be impossible to control, with the coaches passing out messages to the players via the medical team
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:49:06
I wonder if the ‘cooling break’ will be used during the game? Probably not. It was interesting to learn that Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal admitted that he used the break to make major tactical changes for the final 15 minutes, which won them the game. Do you think this is fair?
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:46:12
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:45:20
15 minutes to kick-off and we hope that you were able to join us earlier for our coverage of France v Nigeria. How do you think the refereeing team performed?
RCT at 2014-06-30 20:43:17
Welcome to our coverage of Germany v Algeria – a place in the quarter finals v France is the prize
