Final thoughts and analysis

RCT at 2017-08-13 18:10:47

In my blog I have made reference to Martin`s calm and composed body language and also to his attitude and the confidence that he has shown in his decision making accuracy. He has used his time well and he built this up from the early stages of this game when he spoke to players from both sides which built up and has aided his overall player management.

There has been the key match decision no penalty for WHU in the 1st half and this decision is correct (also note Martin`s credible viewing position to judge this kmd)

In my blog we have discussed the following key attributes seen today from Martin.

  • Positive body language with good arm directional signals
  • Application of law - consistent and correct application including the very good allowing of the MU advantage which saw them hit the post and we then saw Martin correctly caution Ogbonna of WHU at the next stoppage in play.
  • Positioning / Fitness - good movement with a dynamic sprint seen as and when was required. Good viewing angles with proximity to play being achieved.
  • Management of players - this clearly was an attribute achieved by Martin today and he in turn received a very good respect from the players. As a referee this is such a key area and one which you have to work hard at to gain, retain and mixed with the appropriate sanctions was achieved with the yellow cards shown.

Both Assistant Referees have supported Martin in a positive manner and they have read his overall reading of play well and have followed his lead in their overall judgements of fouls in their vicinity and also their key area of offside.

81

RCT at 2017-08-13 17:40:31

Lukaku is offside and I am surprised that there was no flag from Stephen Child - there was a clear and obvious movement from Lukaku to play the ball who was in an offside position.

80

RCT at 2017-08-13 17:38:37

Good position taken up by Adam Nunn as the MU gk had retention of the ball with the WHU player remaining on the edge of the MU penalty - good awareness seen from Adam

Half Time Summary

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:56:35

In my blog I have made reference to Martin`s calm and composed body language and also to his attitude and the confidence that he has shown in his decision making accuracy. He has used his time well and in the early stages spoken to players which has aided his player management.

There has been just the one kmi decision no penalty for WHU in the 1st half and this decision is correct (also note Martin`s credible viewing position to judge) and both assistant referees have supported Martin well and they have followed his lead in their overall judgements.

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:47:41

Half Time

1-0

45

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:47:10

1 minute of additional minimum time is shown by our 4th official Neil Swarbrick.

44

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:45:34

Gk to WHU Adam Nunn just holds the flag down looking to Martin to lead

42

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:44:39

Yellow Card

Eric Bailly MU yellow card is for persistent misconduct and is an indicated by Martin. He is pointing to the placement of the previous offences that have led to the yellow card.

Half time approaching

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:43:00

All match officials will be mindful to get in at half time with no issues. Stephen Child I felt was working very hard to keep up with that last WHU attack. Important as an Assistant to keep on your toes and ready for those quick breaks in play

37

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:38:33

FK to MU signalled by Adam Nunn adds to the teamwork ethic.

35

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:37:03

No penalty to MU is correct as no foul was committed in the WHU pen area. Again you have to be in the right place at the right time as a referee to make these key judgements.

32

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:34:20

GOAL!

Lukaku scores from a quick breakaway which sees a good turn of pace from Martin as play quickly moves forward.

30

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:32:46

Martin speaks to Matic which brings a smile from the MU player. Martin certainly looks calm and composed today.

29

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:31:47

Pogba foul halts a WHU attack with the referee indicating how the foul occurred.

28

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:29:55

Quick reaction from our referee as the WHU player is down on the ground - stoppage in play correct to assess player

27

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:28:15

Good non offside flag from Adam in that last MU attack which sees a ck to MU the outcome.

24

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:26:52

Ck to MU - nice position created by our referee on the edge of the WHU penalty creating a good viewing angle.

22

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:25:10

Offside against West Ham signalled by Stephen Child from a position in line with the 2nd rearmost MU defender. Again key area and position for an Assistant to remain at all times.

21

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:23:17

Ck to MU signalled by Adam from a position on the goal line. This is the position that you must get to as an Assistant to make the correct call.

19

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:21:52

A Stoppage in play as Martin speaks to Hernandez following that last careless challenge. This is good communication as Martin has shown consistency in this area.

18

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:20:07

Martin has a quiet word with Noble following that last fk award to MU. Good low key and proactive management of players.

16

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:18:19

Good advantage to MU is allowed by Martin - followed by a correct no foul indication - confirmed by replay

14

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:16:18

Ck to MU - Adam Nunn shows a good use of how to correctly signal and also how to hold the flag in the correct hand prior to the ck being taken.

13

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:14:40

No fk to Man Utd looks correct and is sold by Martin`s close proximity to play.

10

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:12:26

Man Utd gk - Martin is looking calm and composed in these early stages, keeping low key allowing play to flow.

8

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:10:35

Have a look at Martin`s position on throw ins he is being proactive in ensuring correct placement in these early stages, by his in field position.

6

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:08:25

Good early pace, creating a good viewing angle in that last Man Utd breakaway seen from our referee

4

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:06:08

One of Martin`s personal qualities is his body language and it was good to see a clear arm directional signal in that last throw in to West Ham this maybe basic but is a key attribute of any referee at any level.

2

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:04:09

First offside against West Ham indicated by Stephen Child (nearside assistant) technical area touchline

2

RCT at 2017-08-13 16:02:52

Early words with Jones following that last challenge. Good early proactive player management seen here.

SWOT analysis

RCT at 2017-08-13 15:54:36

When analysing your referee and assistant referee performance it is key to reflect and carry out a SWOT analysis of your performance. Be honest with yourself and firstly look at the strengths in your performance, what went well, why? where when and how. Then consider your weakness these are areas that you need to improve upon. This is absolute key in looking to improve yourself as a referee. opportunities - what are the opportunities for you as a referee / assistant to progress? and what are the threats to your ambition for example work life balance, personal and commitment?

Martin Atkinson Today`s Referee

RCT at 2017-08-13 15:49:05

Martin Atkinson started his refereeing career at the relatively early age of 16 years, as the local team did not have a referee to oversee matches. By 1998, he had been promoted to the Football League's list of Assistant Referees.

This was followed in 2000 by promotion to the Select Group of assistant referees. By December 2002 he was refereeing Football Conference matches, and also refereed the 2003 FA County Youth Cup final.

At the start of the 2003-04 season, Atkinson joined the national list of referees. He had the distinction of not sending off any player from the field of play between August 2004 and October 2005.

Only two years after his Conference debut, Atkinson was appointed to referee his first Premier League game, taking charge of the Manchester City v Birmingham City fixture on 20 April 2005, cautioning one player and awarding the home side a penalty kick in a 3–0 result.

During the three seasons between 2003 and 2006, Atkinson issued only eight red cards in 102 matches, an average of less than 0.08 per game.

In 2006 Atkinson was appointed to the list of FIFA referees.

The 2009-10 season saw Atkinson referee 48 matches in English football, his highest tally of appointments in one season to date.

In September 2010, Atkinson was handed a one-week demotion to the role of fourth official after a time-keeping dispute with Everton manager David Moyes. Everton had scored two injury-time goals to make the score 3–3 against Manchester United, but Atkinson then blew his final whistle while Everton were midway through an attack with a chance of a winner.

Martin Atkinson - Today`s Referee

RCT at 2017-08-13 15:46:46

Taken from Jason Pettigrew`s excellent column

Jason Pettigrew Week 1 - Runners and Riders

A mouth-watering Premier League matchup for Martin Atkinson to get his teeth into on the first ‘Super Sunday’ of the season.

With the millions watching on TV, Atkinson can play a huge part in this being an early season classic at Old Trafford.

Martin Atkinson – all you need to know

Matches in 2017/18: 1 (1 on TV) Fourth official appointments in 2017/18: 0

As Slaven Bilic and his Hammers showed in the opening few away games in 2016/17, they will come to play and to win, and that alone will draw United out of their slumber – though it’s fair to say after the worst unbeaten run in history, Jose Mourinho has got the Red Devils playing as he wants them.

Angry, tough and with no little skill, this United is very definitely all of the Portuguese’s own work. No excuses this time if the Theatre of Dreams becomes one of nightmares again.

The Special One has fallen foul of officialdom many times in his career, and he’ll not want to begin this campaign with the headlines being about referees. That’ll suit Atkinson just fine too.
