AM at 2016-03-13 19:29:13

A thrilling FA Cup quarter final at Old Trafford to round up our weekend of quarter finals.

This was a game that started quietly and certainly moved into gear in the 2nd half. The final score of 1-1 was probably a fair reflection of the game overall and a replay at West Ham United is the outcome of a frenetic finish.

3 Key Match Decisions that we need to discuss firstly and are as follows:

59th minute – no handball against Reid this did not appear to be deliberate following the ball coming off his body onto his arm. I do feel that MA got this decision correct – handball again one of our favourite current hot topics.

64th minute no penalty kick awarded to WHU following Payet going down in a challenge with a MU player – no penalty kick was the outcome – there did appear contact on PAYET but was it enough to secure a penalty kick? I thought that Stephen Child would have had a good side on view (better than MA) and between both of them they decided no penalty kick?

83rd minute following the MU goal as the ball has come across the WHU goal then Schweinsteiger 31 looks to foul Randolph the WHU goal keeper just before the goal is scored by Martial – is the contact enough to justify a fk here to WHU? I don’t honestly feel here that MA had a hope to judge this from his position in real time. It is always easy to judge on slow motion replay.

All 3 key match decisions would be a great case for video review and I am sure that as a referee you would want help and further assistance in these key match decisions areas.

What are you thoughts though?

All 3 key match decisions will be discussed tomorrow on The Ref Show

when former FIFA referee Mark Halsey and Southampton legend David Hirst join England`s No.1 Interviewer Alan Biggs for The Ref Show

Please let us know your thoughts on Twitter @youaretheref or e-mail at info@you-are-the-ref.com

Martin Atkinson has shown us why he is one of out top referees. He has controlled this open and at times frantic game with an air of calmness total assurance and complete authority. All yellow cards shown were consistent and correct and MA was consistent in his judgement of foul / non foul. This was seen from his 1st minute judgement to allow an excellent advantage to MU following a reckless challenge by Winston Reid on a MU player and as the MU attack then sees the ball then go on and out of play , MA then comes back to correctly show the yellow card to Reid. How many other referees would have in the 1st minute just played the advantage but then left the yellow card as it was so very early in the game?. Well done here MA. Fitness, movement and positioning throughout were first class but for all his hard work and match game reading this game will be remembered for the key match decisions, difficult judgements agreed, but highlight with speed and high intensity of the game how our referees need help in the area of video review one which I am sure will be taken up in our news and features section.

As for both Assistants then Harry Lennard has supported MA well in support of a free kick and offside judgements.

Similarly Stephen Child again has supported MA well just the key match decision as we have discussed was a key moment in the 64th minute.

Big call and a key match decision and yes again it is that favourite topic at the moment handball! well was it? Reid handball? well what are your thoughts? MA seemed to have the best view here.

58

AM at 2016-03-13 18:18:15

Yellow CardKouyate reckless and correct MA is looking sharp and consistent in this area

55

AM at 2016-03-13 18:17:34

Replays confirms no penalty kick to MU is correct not deliberate handball – what a key issue handball is at the moment do we need more clarity on this subject?

54

AM at 2016-03-13 18:15:13

Yellow Card

Payet reckless challenge correct – just a pity that HL did not signal that fk? it was right on his side and needed a flag he seemed to go and then decided not to flag a pity for the teamwork ethic here

52

AM at 2016-03-13 18:13:22

Foul on Payet again good close judgement from MA

51

AM at 2016-03-13 18:12:47

CK to MU their 5th to date and there are half hearted appeals for handball appeals by MU nothing doing here on replay.

49

AM at 2016-03-13 18:10:21

FK to WHU important that MA did not anticipate that the ball would just out of play but actually here it was a fk to WHU following a foul on Reid

48

AM at 2016-03-13 18:08:29

No fk MA spot on to judge if you are right there to judge your decision will be accepted that much more by players

46

AM at 2016-03-13 18:07:13

Good early movement and focus from HL as he moves along the touchline keeping that all important position in line with the 2nd rearmost defender

Half time summary

AM at 2016-03-13 18:02:38

Martin Atkinson to half time has shown us why he is one of out top referees he has been so far quite simply, EXCELLENT.

He has controlled this open and at times frantic game with an air of calmness total assurance and complete authority. This was seen from his 1st minute judgement to allow an excellent advantage to MU following a reckless challenge by Winston Reid on a MU player and as the MU attack then sees the ball then go on and out of play , MA then comes back to correctly show the yellow card to Reid. How many other referees would have in the 1st minute just played the advantage but then left the yellow card as it was so very early in the game. Well done here MA!

Both side have wanted to play, and he has allowed them to do so yet never had his control compromised. Yes we had the missed challenge by Noble in the 35th minute but if that is all we are talking about then that is not a problem.

Both Assistants have tuned in very well to MA and his management of this game and they have supported him very well such is his overall match control to half time.

More of the same please MA and team in the 2nd half

Half Time

1 ADDITIONAL MINUTE OF ADDEDTIME - MINIMUM

AM at 2016-03-13 17:47:29

43

AM at 2016-03-13 17:47:03

No fk to WHU looks to be just about right NO FURTHER ACTION NEEDED THERE

42

AM at 2016-03-13 17:45:07

Can you feel the underlying temperature in this game, the intensity of both teams is there to see in a must win game.

40

AM at 2016-03-13 17:43:50

FK to MU close to the touchline correct to award a safe fk award to MU

39

AM at 2016-03-13 17:42:33

That looked a bit rash from Rashford on Carroll no complaints in the award of a fk to WHU

37

AM at 2016-03-13 17:41:21

MA well positioned to not award a fk to MU with Martial appearing to run into the WHU player – again look at the excellent position of MA to judge no fk

35

AM at 2016-03-13 17:38:39

How the tempo can quickly rise if you miss a foul as we have just seen , MA has then had to quickly step in and award the next foul which was by Fellaini and well worthy of a yellow card

31

AM at 2016-03-13 17:36:35

No foul by Noble on Lingard awarded? and then shortly afterwards Fellainin in frustration goes in recklessly and is correctly shown the Yellow Cardfor his foul on Noble

30

AM at 2016-03-13 17:33:44

Good intervention from SC to correctly signal a gk to MU – not an easy one to detect and good judgement seen here

29

AM at 2016-03-13 17:32:02

Deflection spotted by MA this time – ck to MU correct outcome

27

AM at 2016-03-13 17:31:21

Good breakaway and movement from MU sees Herrera blast the ball over the WHU bar – again a good viewing position and movement seen from MA

27

AM at 2016-03-13 17:29:40

Another good advantage to MU with a clear shout and signal from MA followed up by a throw in to WHU by SC

Opening 25 minutes

AM at 2016-03-13 17:27:26

The Referee Team led by MA have put in a really good opening that early yellow card was such an important moment in the 1st minute and his reading of play

19

AM at 2016-03-13 17:22:23

Deflection off Cresswell as the ball goes out of play for a MU ck, surprisingly MA gives a gk? he seemed to have a good view and position for that one

17

AM at 2016-03-13 17:21:06

Very good fitness and movement from MA seen in that last WHU breakaway – he is looking the business today really sharp and focussed

15

AM at 2016-03-13 17:17:58

GK to WHU again clear view achieved by MA to judge

13

AM at 2016-03-13 17:16:36

MA in an excellent viewing position to judge a foul by Rashford accepted by all players close by and sold by his credible position

11

AM at 2016-03-13 17:15:20

HL offside against WHU well positioned to judge he is looking relaxed and composed as the camera focusses on him as he raises his flag

10

AM at 2016-03-13 17:13:48

Good awareness from MA as Carroll closes down on De Gea and blocks his clearance – awareness key in these situations

8

AM at 2016-03-13 17:12:05

In that last MU throw in which went out for a goal kick we saw Stephen Child continue his movement down the touchline to the corner flag and then signal a gk to WHU

7

AM at 2016-03-13 17:10:26

Good movement and position from MA in that last MU attack saw him wide and down the left channel – wide of the WHU penalty area

5

AM at 2016-03-13 17:08:48

Good non offside flag from Harry Lennard – well positioned to judge and keep his flag down by his side on that last WHU breakaway

AM at 2016-03-13 17:07:41

Going back to the that yellow card for Reid good to see the referee prepared to correctly show the yellow card so early in the game

1

AM at 2016-03-13 17:06:06

Really good early advantage from MA to MU and he then comes back to correctly show theYellow Cardto Reid 2 of WHU following his reckless challenge – well done MA and so early in the game, great piece of refereeing

1

AM at 2016-03-13 17:03:15

Stephen Child (SC) is on the near touchline

Martin Atkinson

AM at 2016-03-13 16:54:57

It is no surprise to see Martin Atkinson leading out our team on yet another televised game.

Atkinson does continue to be regularly chosen for these big games and another live television appearance awaits one of our top officials

He has been confirmed as one of England’s EURO 2016 referees and the expectation is that the Yorkshire-based official will put in a top class performance today with him is one assistant who will be part of his team for that EURO tournament (Stephen Child as Assistant Referee) Harry Lennard is the other assistant with Robert Madley supporting the team with 4th Official duties.

This should be an absolutely fascinating clash officiating to be seen at the very highest level.

Good Afternoon!

AM at 2016-03-13 16:45:16

A very warm welcome to all our REFCAM followers from around the world when we see Manchester United vs. West ham United to be played at Old Trafford in  Manchester, England.

What a great earlier result for Watford winning at Arsenal 1-2 to see them into The FA Cup semi finals.

This is going to be a tough one for Manchester United with West Ham in good away form following their last away win at Everton last weekend, when they came back from 2-0 down to win 2-3.

The Hammers have won their last four games, and made the notion of unbelievable that staying in the Premier League was their season-goal before moving to their new ground next season.

Enjoy this afternoon`s game!
