Anthony Taylor and his team should be very pleased with their evening’s work – the key plus points being:

  • The referee showed a calm and collected approach throughout – he was totally professional and used his experience to great effect, especially with the double caution in the 66th minute
  • His recognition of penal offences was of a very high standard throughout; I cannot recall one occurrence of an obviously incorrect call, although the 6th minute ‘penalty’ call is causing some debate on our Social Media feeds
  • The key plus point was the referee’s ability to make the job in hand look easy – he has a calm authority and is confident, without being arrogant.

#MUNSTO Former Football League Referee Dean Mohareb’s votes are in – he has the same 4 nominees, and gives an honourable mention to Pawson and relative new-comers Kavanagh and Tierney

#MUNSTO 5 minutes remain – keep focused Gents, you have done the hard work …..

#MUNSTO Our own Mark Halsey votes for Oliver, Atkinson, Marriner and Taylor based on current form, ex Premier League Referee and Coach Roger Dilkes nominates the same 4, but what do you think – tweet us here @youaretheref

Best Referees on the Premier League this season – votes coming in for Andre Marriner, Michael Oliver and others.

#MUNSTO Just 15 minutes to go and Anthony and his team will be looking to see the game through to a safe and successful conclusion.

71

AH at 2018-01-15 22:31:35

GOAL! Lukaku weaves his magic in the penalty area and it’s game, set and match to the Home Team.  Surely there is no way back now for Stoke City

AH at 2018-01-15 22:28:23

Yellow CardYellow CardExcellent focus and game management as firstly Lukaku and then Ireland find their way into Anthony Taylor’s book.  First class management by raising his profile as required to ensure that control is retained ….

64

AH at 2018-01-15 22:25:16

Mata nets from close range, but he was clearly offside – good awareness ….

The Away Team supporters are looking to lift the atmosphere and spur their team on with chants of “Paul Lambert’s Barmy Army”, I love their optimism and passion …..

52

AH at 2018-01-15 22:10:15

I am sure the referee mentioned this during half-time, but the team must keep focused, especially in a game like this where the refereeing team are very much in control ….

AH at 2018-01-15 22:07:34

#MUNSTO Lingard offends and turns to find Anthony Taylor 5 meters from play – great to see ….

46

AH at 2018-01-15 22:02:37

#MUNSTO As the 2nd half gets underway, for you young aspiring referees tuning in to watch the game, just keep an eye on Anthony’s movement around the field of play and watch how he always seems to be well positioned through a combination of a high level of fitness and an uncanny ability to read the game.

Half Time so far so good for Anthony and his team – no room for complacency…..

44

AH at 2018-01-15 21:45:45

An honourable mention for the Assistant Referees who have not been tested so far, but what they have done, they have done well

42

AH at 2018-01-15 21:43:55

#MUNSTO It is very quiet on Social Media this evening – please contact us on any refereeing matters here @youaretheref

37

AH at 2018-01-15 21:41:23

GOAL! That was a Rolls Royce of a strike from Martial to give the Home Team a 2-0 lead, did you notice the referee apply the advantage clause in the lead-up to the goal….

33

AH at 2018-01-15 21:37:39

#MUNSTO Once again the referee was well paced to judge no dive in the penalty area by Mata – his calming influence and clear decision making is being appreciated by the players, with Anthony Taylor showing the same positive refereeing attributes as Andre Marriner did so successfully yesterday

30

AH at 2018-01-15 21:32:53

Not much grit and steel in this game so far, not that the refereeing team will mind at all – but the game lacks the passion of a usual Premier League game

24

AH at 2018-01-15 21:27:32

#MUNSTO Pogba shows his frustration with a cynical challenge against Steven Ireland, has Anthony Taylor missed an opportunity to assert his authority with the games first yellow card? Let us know what you think by tweeting us @youaretheref

23

AH at 2018-01-15 21:24:00

A quarter of the game gone and the neutrals will be hoping for a Stoke City goal to make a game of it – they have come close twice already

21

AH at 2018-01-15 21:22:11

#MUNSTO There can be little doubt that Anthony Taylor “looks the part”, he moves with ease and enjoys a relaxed and athletic running style

17

AH at 2018-01-15 21:19:01

#MUNSTO Patterns of play often assist the referee in settling into the game – that has happened here with the Home Team dominating

13

AH at 2018-01-15 21:15:36

Anthony Taylor was well placed to judge a penal offence committed by Martial – that was a close call, but the referee was in an ideal position to “sell” the decision

8

AH at 2018-01-15 21:12:28

GOAL!Not the start the new Stoke manager was looking for as Valencia curls an impressive shot past Butland – it could be a long evening for the Away Team

6

AH at 2018-01-15 21:09:58

#MUNSTO We have a minor talking point already as Bauer challenges Martial in the penalty area, I think the referee called that correctly – but what do you think – let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref

5

AH at 2018-01-15 21:05:30

#MUNSTO 5 minutes gone and nothing to trouble the refereeing team so far ……..

One of the Premier League’s best referees,  Anthony Taylor, is the man in charge for this game, Adam Nunn and Con Hatzidakis provide the on the field support, Bobby Madley has the 4th official duties.

AH at 2018-01-15 20:48:15

Yes it’s a VAR issue, that’s obvious, but tell me the difference between that handball and an attacker blatantly diving in the penalty area to win a penalty kick – same outcome (goal) if he gets away with it – and therefore are we going to start issuing retrospective bans for Doucoure type actions?

Pre-Match

AH at 2018-01-15 20:45:19

Much to talk about from the weekend’s games – tuning into the RefShow, which was recorded earlier today, is available for viewing on our website and features Roger Dilkes and Keith Hackett, provides some interesting debating points, but I would like to focus on the actions of Watford’s Doucoure who’s handballed goal late on in the game against Southampton salvaged a draw for the Home Team.
