Manchester United v Sevilla – UCL Round of 16

Full Time Summary

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev

That may not have been the most exciting game of Champions League football we have seen for a long time, but you can take nothing away from the Officials as they had no influence at all on that result.

That was a massive appointment for Danny Makkelie and he did his reputation no harm at all by the way he managed that event. He set his stall out early with an excellent yellow card in the 5th minute for the first reckless challenge, then maintained a consistent level of control by not micromanaging the rest of the game until the temperature finally started to rise after the first goal.

As I predicted, he then had a game to referee, and he stuck to his task right to the end and calmly dished out 4 yellow cards in the closing stages which were all fully justified and appropriate in accordance to the laws of the game.

Both ARs supported the match Referee well with just one messy throw-in decision throughout the whole 90 minutes. Even the AAR got in on a sound team performance by confirming the ball crossed the goal-line for Sevilla’s second goal (I still think the UCL should use goal-line technology though)!

All in all, the press will be full of the way United played (or didn’t play) tomorrow, and I doubt there will be a single mention of the referee – just what every official aims for.

Well done Danny Makkelie – who knows, we might even see you again this season after that one!

Full Time

Manchester United 1 v 2 Sevilla

GB at 2018-03-13 22:36:15

Marcus Rashford (MU 19) Yellow Card  becomes the 1st United player to be caution for unsporting behaviour as be broke up that promising attacking move with a little push in the back.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:34:10

Minimum of 4 added minutes

GB at 2018-03-13 22:33:14

Consistency again from the referee as Sarabia (S 17) picks up the 4th yellow card Yellow Card of the game.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:31:54

Correa (S 11)  takes one Yellow Cardfor the team then with that reckless challenge in the United penalty area

GB at 2018-03-13 22:29:20

Not a back pass for me either but I am surprised the referee did not give the safe free kick as Romelu Lukaku (MU 9)  looked like got a little tug in the build up to that United chance.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:26:21

GOAL!  Romelu Lukaku (MU 9)

Man Utd 1 v 2 Sevilla

Hold the back page!

GB at 2018-03-13 22:24:01

Ben Yedder (S 9) picked up a Yellow Card for excessive goal celebrations when he removed his shirt.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:21:51

So that’s what the Additional Assistant Referee does! Fair play to him thought the Football was clearly over the line.

GOAL! Ben Yedder (S 9)

Man Utd 0 v 2 Sevilla

GB at 2018-03-13 22:19:04

That goal obviously changes the whole complexion of the game so now the officials actually have a game to control for the next 15 minutes.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:17:26

That means there will be no penalties to decide this game tonight!

GB at 2018-03-13 22:16:46

GOAL! Ben Yedder (S 9)

Man Utd 0 v 1 Sevilla

GB at 2018-03-13 22:14:34

20 minutes to go and the pressure is starting to show on the players, but spare a thought for the officials who will be thinking of the consequences of one mistake from any of them in the closing stages.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:12:04

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev Two free kicks in two minutes and for the first time since the yellow card in the 5th minute and the referee’s profile rises, although he still looks calm and controlled. Sevilla repay the complement and fluff their free kick as well!

GB at 2018-03-13 22:09:43

Makkelie was excellently place to see the foul on Marcus Rashford (MU 19) which lead to that attacking free kick for United which they characteristically wasted in this game.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:07:40

Referee Makkelie continues to do his best to keep the game flowing as much as he can and not be too fussy and stop the game unnecessarily. What the officials need to be alert to in games like this is the slightest thing which might suddenly ignite things. A simple trow-in the wrong way, or corner when it should be a goal-kick, or a clear free kick not given could have a major affect on the result so they need to keep their concentration high, even though the game is so mundane.

GB at 2018-03-13 22:00:28

As the game starts to open up with attacking moves switching from one end to the other the referee needs to balance the need to stay in touch with play but also keep something in the tank unless he needs to make it through extra time.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:56:41

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev The referee has started the second half as he finished the first 45 by not being conned into giving free kicks every time the United player fall to the ground and appeal for a foul. He has been very consistent with that tonight.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:54:44

Alexis Sanchez (MU 7) is brought down unfairly from behind. Even if the Sevilla player got a bit of his boot on the ball, he still came through from behind to get there.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:52:45

First big call of the second half as Makkelie proves his fitness and makes up a lot of ground to get into a great position to see a great challenge take the ball in the United penalty area.

Half-Time Summary

GB at 2018-03-13 21:43:18

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev

If a referee cannot raise his game in front of a packed house at the Theatre of dreams they will never be able to do it anywhere! So step forward Danny Makkelie who will be very satisfied with that first 45 minutes.

I know that it has hardly been a difficult game to control, but it is important not to underestimate the effect that early yellow card for the first reckless challenge in the 5th minute had on the players from that point. Had the referee not been strong for that stand out worse foul of the game so far, then things might have been different. As it was, the challenges have not been very intense at all and the players have been more intent on falling over at the slightest touch. And that’s where the referee has done well as he has not been tempted to stop play unnecessarily. Goodness knows that the game has not been very exciting so far, just imagine if you had a fussy referee out there as well!

Plenty of advantage and plenty of communication with the players – so far so good from the Officials but it could be a different game in the second half.

Half Time

Manchester United 0 v 0 Sevilla

GB at 2018-03-13 21:32:19

Another advantage to Sevilla from Makkelie but I do wish referees would use the same signal throughout the game. I have said several times on RefCam that I don’t mind the “old” two handed or “new” one handed signal, but I do think the referee should be consistent so the players and spectators know what decision has been made.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:28:51

Ball to hand in the Sevilla penalty area and once agin the referee was very loud and positive with his NOT hand ball communication to the players.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:27:11

First sign of a chink in this refereeing crew’s armour as a break down in communication leads to a late and messy stoppage for the ball going out of play for a throw-in.

That was followed by a few loud appeals for free kicks but fair play to the referee he did not panic and give free kicks for things he has let go earlier in the game. This showed his ability to park the slight confusion with his AR immediately

GB at 2018-03-13 21:21:36

Good confidence shown again by Makkelie with another sound advantage as Sevilla come out of defence. Far too often referees would rather give the free kick for holding in these European matches but this referee is managing the game just like a League match at home in the Netherlands!

GB at 2018-03-13 21:19:13

Another good example of referee Makkelie’s tactics then as he is not going to give too many cheap free kicks every time a player goes down – good for him!

GB at 2018-03-13 21:16:34

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev 30 minutes gone and still the referee is keeping a tight grip on the game without micromanaging it. All the officials would have settled for their involvement in this opening stages and need to stay focused until half time now. I like the way he is communicating with the players every time he makes a decision to build up a rapport with both teams.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:13:37

That was an interesting chain of events as the referee stopped play for offside before the AR gave a signal. I expect he got some communication from his AR saying they are all offside coming back as the AR waited to see if they got involved in active play – you do not see that very often. Safe refereeing again though.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:09:11

Good advantage played by Makkelie and no need to go back and caution for that blatant holding as it did not break up a promising attacking move in that part of the filed of play.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:06:03

That may have looked like a soft free kick for the minimal of contact by the United player and his opponent falls to the ground, but the referee needs to keep the game where it is at the moment and if that means giving a few “safe” free kicks he won’t mind that. He at least gave himself a split second to think before he stopped play that time.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:02:58

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev Just like the last time I watched this referee he has started really well. He looks very relaxed and in control right from the opening minute. He has kept out of the play as much as he can with just 3 free kicks in the first 15 minutes including the first yellow for a reckless challenge. The signs look good at the moment but there is still a long way to go.

GB at 2018-03-13 21:01:18

Positive body language by the referee as he sells his decision for that foul on Fellaini by telling the players not to over-react.

GB at 2018-03-13 20:56:55

Another positive little cameo by referee Makkelie as Marcus Rashford (MU 19)  appealed for a free kick thinking he was impeded but the referee was strong enough not to be swayed by the Home player in this cauldron of a stadium.

GB at 2018-03-13 20:53:45

#MUFC #SevillaFC #munsev

Excellent Yellow Card yellow card for Éver Banega (S 10) following that reckless challenge. This game needed a strong referee and Makkelie has sent out a message there – don’t mess with me tonight. Now we need to see consistency.

GB at 2018-03-13 20:50:18

The first foul is an easy one for Makkelie to set his stall out with – just careless

GB at 2018-03-13 20:48:50

Right from the off this referee makes his intentions clear as some physical challenges against and by Romelu Lukaku (MU 9) are allowed to go without the need to stop play.

kick off

That was a nice touch by the referee to let one of the mascots carry the ball all the way out to the hand shakes!

GB at 2018-03-13 20:41:03

Not long to go now as the players and officials prepare to leave the tunnel

Today’s officials are all from The Netherlands:

Referee:  Danny Makkelie

AR1: Mario Diks (Technical Area)

AR2: Hessel Steegstra

Additional assistant referees:

Kevin Blom

Kamphuis Jochem

4th Official: Jan de Vries

This 35 year old referee was born in Willemstad, Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles and was promoted to the FIFA List in 2011.

This is a real plumb appointment for the former Dutch Policeman who has never managed a game in the Champions League so far into the Tournament before.

With 7 years international experience behind him already at this level and is hot on the heels of the Netherlands top referee Björn KUIPERS in the succession planning stakes.

I watched this referee manage the Liverpool v Sevilla game earlier in this season’s competition and I felt he delivered an average performance on the night after promising a lot at the start, but failed to deliver technically at times. There is no doubt that this official portrays an excellent body language and looks strong and meaningful as he goes about his duties, but I am hoping he translates these positive characteristics into his actions in this game and does not duck the big decisions when they come along.

Here are the starting line-ups for this game:

José Mourinho has certainly got his team into a rich vein of form at the moment with some really battling domestic performances in recent weeks, but can he keep the ball running for this winner takes all encounter I wonder? The failure to nick an away goal last month might just come back to haunt the Red Devils tonight though, as a score draw is not an option for the home side now if they want to progress further this term.

If Sevilla were to sneak a result tonight it would be the first time they have ever won a Round of 16 tie in the UCL, so everything is set for a classic Champions League knock out match and the last thing anyone wants is for the Officials to have any influence on the game tonight.
