Conclusions to games such as this are drawn according to what was at stake to the those concerned, well any Man United v Liverpool game always means there was much at stake! As for Michael Oliver’s contribution there was much to admire in this performance not least his overall management of the game, some superb positioning in and around the penalty which ensured he got the key decisions right, he also judged his involvement level well never attracting any unnecessary attention on himself, a big match performance which was safely delivered. Just a couple of talking points, i thought Lucas was fortunate to escape a first half caution, the other point being Michael’s first half positioning, as United played possession football and built up attacks slowly he got ahead of play and too close the action a couple of times, he would do well to watch the first half of this game again and adopt a strategy  for the next time this happens, as it surely will! However he looked more comfortable as the game opened up in the second half

Both Assistants looked really sharp with some great offside decision making and technique on view, all in all a good team performance!

FULL TIME

Summary to follow

RH at 2015-09-12 19:21:45

Good to see some great touchline movement and signalling technique from Assistant Gary Beswick on the far side!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:18:55

4 minutes added time!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:16:21

Reflecting on the Liverpool goal, although there was a defender in close proximity to Benteke, i’m pleased that the Referee allowed the goal tom stand, it would have been to the detriment of the game if he had disallowed it!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:14:41

United are two up again as Martial makes it a memorable debut with a goal!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:13:03

Game fully on again!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:12:34

What a fantastic goal from Benteke as he acrobatically pulls a goal back for Liverpool!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:10:56

Good Refereeing as Michael Oliver closed in on the half way line skirmish between Martial and Lovren and then blew for a free kick before it got out of hand!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:08:50

The Referee showing good anticipation as that United attack broke down to gain some extra yards as Liverpool mounted a counter attack!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:06:34

An aspect of Michael Olivers game that i like today is his ability to attack the corner of the penalty area’s to get that all important viewing angle!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:05:00

Although that second United goal has taken some pressure of the Referee, a Liverpool goal would change everything!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:03:03

Milner himself now receives a Yellow card for a reckless tackle on Young!

RH at 2015-09-12 19:01:49

A yellow card for Darmian as he cynically halts Milners progress, he can have no complaints with that one!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:59:16

We return to Premier League tomorrow for the 1.30 kick off at The Stadium of Light when Sunderland host Spurs, later at 10.00 our weekend MLS game features Toronto FC v New York Revolution. The weekend programme is rounded off at 8.00 on Monday night when West Ham entertain Newcastle United

RH at 2015-09-12 18:58:10

Herrera converts from the spot to make it 2-0

RH at 2015-09-12 18:57:31

Penalty as Gomez shows his lack of experience in tripping Herrera!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:56:38

As Ashley Young receives treatment for any injury, its worth reminder you of Michael Oliver’s positioning when Ashley Young   attacked the penalty area, he was on hand both times to view any potential challenges from close proximity!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:52:49

Another good penalty area spot by the Referee as Ings goes in hard on Blind near the goal line

RH at 2015-09-12 18:51:38

The Referee is looking much more comfortable with his movement around the field of play since the goal was scored and the game opened up.

RH at 2015-09-12 18:50:33

Great explosive sprinting from Michael Oliver during that Liverpool attack!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:49:10

The Referee well placed to view the Lovren trip on Fellaini, again superb positioning just outside the penalty area to spot the offence!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:46:58

Changes in play like this don’t come about by accident, Liverpool are now playing balls into Benteke and Ings having changed their midfield formation since they went behind

RH at 2015-09-12 18:45:15

The game has opened up since the goal, the Referee is now tracking play more as particularly Liverpool are making 40/50 metre passes

RH at 2015-09-12 18:43:11

Its worth noting that Assistant Gary Beswick did well at the scoring of the goal, he decided rightly that Fellaini, although in an offside position was making no attempt to play the ball, in fact he had his back to play!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:40:51

Despite the howls from the crowd, Lovren winning the ball fairly there!

at 2015-09-12 18:39:33

The free kick declension that lead to that goal underlines the point about key decision making in and around the penalty area, Referees must hunt out the correct viewing distance and angles, Michael Oliver demonstrating the importance of this aspect of the game, well done!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:37:04

From the resulting free kick Blind makes it 1-0

RH at 2015-09-12 18:36:10

A yellow card for Clyne as he holds up Young on the edge of the penalty area, great positioning from the Referee!

RH at 2015-09-12 18:33:20

The second half has started

RH at 2015-09-12 18:29:37

A chess match of a first half where the match officials are able to take a low profile. Lucas was fortunate to escape a yellow card for three careless challenges, the Referee choosing to give him a final warning. Michael Oliver just needs to gauge his movement in attacking build ups as both teams particularly United like possession football, he does get in the way occasionally. but overall he’s  judging his involvement level well and can be satisfied with the first half. Both Assistants look sharp giving some good offside decisions

RH at 2015-09-12 18:02:38

Gary Beswick doing well there to signal Ings offside as he came back into play from an offside position

RH at 2015-09-12 18:00:39

Gary Beswick tuned in there to signal that ball out of play!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:59:41

Lucas again late on Herrera, he’ll have to care if he is to avoid a yellow card!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:58:34

We return to Premier League tomorrow for the 1.30 kick off at The Stadium of Light when Sunderland host Spurs, later at 10.00 our weekend MLS game features Toronto FC v New York Revolution. The weekend programme is rounded off at 8.00 on Monday night when West Ham entertain Newcastle United

RH at 2015-09-12 17:57:30

Going back to that Lucas challenge the Referee was too close to the incident, no harm done but he’s not really comfortable with his positioning in some of United’s possession slow build ups

RH at 2015-09-12 17:56:14

A clumsey  challenge by Lucas, the Referee rightly having words

RH at 2015-09-12 17:54:48

An awkward moment for the Referee there as he bought the whistle to mouth but did not blow as Shaw challenged Milner, nothing wrong with the tackle but Michael Oliver was a bit quick on the draw!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:52:18

Good offside flag from Stuart Burt there as Fellaini went a fraction too soon!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:50:58

With teams playing possession football its not a matter of running around at speed following play, the game at Premier League level often means studying the game more and not getting ahead of play, something that was never the case in the old ‘long ball’ days!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:48:52

The Referee just getting ahead of play a couple of times in that last passage of play, needs to hang back in the channel a little more

RH at 2015-09-12 17:46:44

Michael Oliver showing good awareness at that last united corner to track the short corner ball

RH at 2015-09-12 17:45:20

Benteke fouled from behind, a definite free kick

RH at 2015-09-12 17:44:22

Ings rightly pulled up for that trip

RH at 2015-09-12 17:43:39

In that last United attack, it was good to see Michael Oliver closing in on the penalty area as the move came to an end!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:41:59

Both of today’s teams have played possession football so far this season, so tactically that it makes it interesting for our team of match officials in this game. Michael Oliver will need to read the game well so as not to get caught up in play as the teams build their attacks, yet be in position to seek those all-important major decision viewing angles in and around the penalty area! The Assistants will also need to be sharp today, with both teams playing keep ball they will need to be ready for that key offside decision as the ball is played in through the channels!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:41:11

Depay goes to ground following contact from Lovren, looked a case for a free kick!

RH at 2015-09-12 17:39:33

Mignolet’s error in releasing the ball short is the type of moment when Assistants need to be focused and not anticipating that the ball will go upfield

RH at 2015-09-12 17:37:05

United are playing a possession game as we thought

RH at 2015-09-12 17:35:13

first free kick of the careless challenge on Benteke

at 2015-09-12 17:33:57

Already we see the Referee judging his midfield movement carefully so as not to get caught up in play!
