Stay with us here on YATR for more live commentary on Refcam as we have some fantastic games coming up for you.

There is more Champions League action tomorrow as we cover the game Chelsea v Dynamo Kiev.

Then we return to Premier League action on Saturday when I shall be commenting again on the clash between Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Immediately after that game the action continues with more Refcam coverage as Stoke City entertain Chelsea.

As if that wasn’t enough…Sunday sees two more top games in Aston Villa v Manchester City and the massive game Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur.

There is, of course, loads of other great content on our website including ‘The Ref Show’ where experts from within the game review the weekend’s action, a fantastic new feature in Tim Vickery’s column and, of course, the superb ‘Hackett’s Blog’ where the former top referee and General Manager of the PGMOL continues to offer thoughts on how English refereeing standards could be improved.

Add to that a fascinating insight into the footballing thoughts of world-renowned musician Paul Heaton, along with another excellent contribution from Kim Milton Nielsen, and it is clear why YATR followers know this is the place for all referees to improve their knowledge, understanding and performance.

Keep it here on

United take the points in a game which failed to live up to its billing as CSKA did a job on United for 80 minutes by defending deep and well, and United had no answer to their tactics for the majority of the game.

However, one great pass from Michael Carrick opened up the CSKA defence and his ball was moved on to Rooney who headed the winner, to see United beat Russian opponents at home for the first time in their history.

Our referees did a good job in a game of few major decisions.

The lack of high quality action is no reflection in their performances as referee Marciniak gave the game every opportunity to breathe and develop

If there is anything he can learn from this one it would be his failure to caution Ashley Young for a scandalous dive in the CSKA penalty area. To have cautioned the United man would have been the icing on the cake for our Polish referees.

GT at 2015-11-03 22:35:14

And that’s our lot as United take the spoils…

Foul for United in a dangerous area as the game draws to its end

GT at 2015-11-03 22:32:33

Foul by Fellaini is well spotted by the referee

GT at 2015-11-03 22:31:09

That’s the end of the 90 minutes.

Our referee is to play a minimum of 3 additional minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 22:15:32

Goal kick awarded by referee Marciniak following a disgraceful dive by Ashley Young.

The United man has form for that kind of deceit, and I just wish the referee had cautioned him for his theatricals.

Nobody wants to see that in football.

Shame on you, Ashley Young.

GT at 2015-11-03 22:12:59

Rooney misses an absolute sitter of  chance when it seemed more difficult to miss than it was to score!

GT at 2015-11-03 22:10:20

Cries go around for a penalty to United as Rooney goes down in the penalty area.

There was a shirt pull but the United captain went to ground after that incident had passed and fell over more in desperation than belief

66 minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 22:07:11

Fellaini replaces Martial as United make their first change.

GT at 2015-11-03 22:06:30

Rooney makes a foul on his opponent, possibly out of frustration.

Well seen by our referee.

GT at 2015-11-03 22:05:00

Listkiewicz is a busy man as he correctly awards offside again against United.

This time it’s Mata…

62 minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 22:03:09

Yet again United are caught offside.

This time Ashley Young is the guilty party.

GT at 2015-11-03 22:02:24

This game does provide an opportunity for up-and-coming referees to see how a referee can take the opportunity to lower his profile and stay out of the way.

Our referee has a good feeling for the tempo of the match and isn’t over fussy or excited in a low-key affair.

GT at 2015-11-03 22:01:20

Caution for Wembloom (3) for a foul.

Good decision referee.

Yellow Card

GT at 2015-11-03 21:58:07

Once again Martial is caught offside.

He needs to time those runs much better as chances are few and far between in this one.

Good work from assistant Listkiewicz though

Change for CSKA as Natcho makes way for Dumbia

GT at 2015-11-03 21:53:19

Lingard is tardy in getting back onside and a flag is correctly raised against him

GT at 2015-11-03 21:52:31

Good teamwork between assistant and referee means a corner is correctly awarded to United

GT at 2015-11-03 21:51:13

It has literally been a stroll for referee Marciniak for a large part of this game.

He has rarely needed to charge around, but when called upon to do so he has made the ground easily.

I would like to see him in a much more demanding and testing environment as this game is too easy for him at the moment

GT at 2015-11-03 21:46:06

United take the kick-off and get the second half under way

GT at 2015-11-03 21:32:33

A first half of few, if any, clear chances in a game which is crying out for a goal.

Referee Szymon Marciniak has done well in those opening 45 minutes.

His movement is very good and when coupled with his excellent reading of how play will develop has meant he has always been in position to make judgment calls.

Both assistants could have contributed a little more to enhance the teamwork, but nothing too drastic so far.

All the game is missing is a goal…let’s hope for plenty in the second half.

GT at 2015-11-03 21:31:32

Half Time

GT at 2015-11-03 21:31:19

That’s the end of the opening 45 minutes.

Our referee is adding a minimum of 3 seconds more!

GT at 2015-11-03 21:29:18

Just a couple of minutes left of the first 45

GT at 2015-11-03 21:26:25

Very good work by assistant Sokolnicki who applied the wait-and-see technique before raising his flag to indicate offside against Rooney

GT at 2015-11-03 21:23:08

Good positioning from assistant Sokolnicki allows him to correctly award a corner kick to United

33 minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 21:20:04

That surely had to be a foul throw-in as the United man was airborne when he released the ball.

Nothing given by assistant Listkiewicz though.

31 minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 21:17:31

Martial is fortunate not to see a caution as he pulls his opponent so strongly that he tears the full back’s shirt!

30 minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 21:16:31

Half an hour has passed, and the game would benefit enormously from a goal

GT at 2015-11-03 21:15:44

Referee Marciniak  looked for an advantage as United broke forward but nothing developed so he correctly awarded a free kick following a small foul on Schweinsteiger

GT at 2015-11-03 21:12:56

Excellent positioning by Marciniak allows him to correctly judge handball.

Free kick to CSKA.

GT at 2015-11-03 21:10:36

United are enjoying the bulk of possession but are not hurting Moscow with all of that ball-time.

Our referee is happy to let the players get on with the game and is giving it every chance to develop.

20 minutes

GT at 2015-11-03 21:06:42

Ashley Young is brought down by Schennikov (42) who correctly finds his way into the referee’s notebook for that challenge

Yellow Card

GT at 2015-11-03 21:05:04

Good to see a referee who is fit and fast enough to take a deep and wide position in attacking situations.

Marciniak ran right around the outside of United’s right full back there to gain the optimum viewing angle.

Great work referee.

GT at 2015-11-03 21:02:26

Assistant Sokolnicki calls offside and Martial…good decision

GT at 2015-11-03 21:01:32

15 minutes of the first half have passed and it is so-far-so-good for the officals.

Keep up the good work referee.

GT at 2015-11-03 20:58:49

Good work by our referee who spotted a pull by Martial.

It would have been good to see his assistant Sokolnicki support that decision with a flag as the incident occurred within his patrol zone.

GT at 2015-11-03 20:56:29

…and he is right on the spot to correctly judge no penalty despite loud claims from United.

Just as well he called it correctly as his assistant Sokolnicki had missed an offside by Lingard in the build up to that move.

GT at 2015-11-03 20:54:35

Marciniak is showing his experience as a former player, displaying good awareness and anticipation of play.

GT at 2015-11-03 20:51:33

It’s a dream start for the officials with the game being played at a steady pace, both teams are ‘feeling each other out’.

This gives the referees time to settle into the game without a big call early into the action.

GT at 2015-11-03 20:48:36

A minute in and referee Marciniak  shows his early tolerance level with a free kick to Moscow following a small foul

Referee Marciniak blows his whistle, CSKA Moscow take the kick-off and we are underway…

GT at 2015-11-03 20:41:43

It’s almost time for kick-off at Old Trafford in this crucial Group B match…

GT at 2015-11-03 20:28:22

As for our referees today…

We have a Polish team of officials guarding over this clash.

Szymon Marciniak is the referee with Pawe? Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz running the lines.

The additional assistant referees are Pawe? Raczkowski and Tomasz Musia?, with Rados?aw Siejka acting as fourth official.

34 year old Marciniak joined the FIFA List of Referees back in 2011, and has since worked his way through to the 29-strong list of Elite Category Referees.

Szymon has taken charge of FIFA World Cup qualifying games as well as the final of the 2015 UEFA U-21 Championship (Sweden v Portugal).

Tonight’s game will be his sixth career-outing in the UEFA Champions League having already refereed in Juventus, Monaco, Maribor, Shakhtar Donetsk and Galatasaray.

Everyone at YATR wishes the refereeing team every success as we look forward to a great game…

GT at 2015-11-03 20:19:03

Hi everyone, and welcome to today’s live Refcam commentary.

We offer the Champions League clash between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow, being played at Old Trafford, Manchester.

These are two evenly matched sides who are currently level on both points and goal difference in Group B.

The two teams drew 1-1 in Moscow two weeks ago, which was incidentally the last time Manchester United scored a goal.

Since then the Red Devils have gone over five hours without finding the net.

That fact has not been lost on former United legends and their supporters who are openly asking for a more attacking an entertaining style of play.

The omens are not great though, as United have never beaten Russian opposition at Old Trafford.

On the other hand, CSKA Moscow have tasted victory before in Manchester, when the beat City 2-1 last year.

They are also in fine form as they arrive on the back of a ten match unbeaten run (won 7; drawn 3) since Matchday One and a club record 21 undefeated games in the Russian Premier-Liga. Indeed, the last time they lost was back on 13 April.

Something will have to give tonight. Can Louis van Gall begin to turn around the fortunes of the home side or will CSKA continue their impressive form?
