I take you back to the 1st minute of the game when Mike Dean made the correct call when Sterling tumbled in the penalty area.  There is nothing like getting a key early decision right in terms of gaining the trust of the players!

Mike Dean and his team should be very pleased with their afternoon’s work – the key plus points being:

  • The referee showed a calm and collected approach throughout – he was totally professional and used his experience to great effect, especially with the consistency of his cautions.
  • His recognition of penal offences was of a very high standard throughout; I cannot recall one occurrence of an obviously incorrect call.
  • There can be no doubt that the game was brought to safe and successful conclusion by the match officials was no controversy to speak about, just what the referee and his team would have wished for at kick-off.

The Home Team take all 3 points – summary to follow ………

90+3

AH at 2017-12-03 18:55:13

Yellow CardAdrian cautioned, correctly so, no question of DOGSO in that situation.

90

AH at 2017-12-03 18:52:34

4 minutes of additional time to play for the refereeing team to see the game home!

88

AH at 2017-12-03 18:49:36

Manchester City’s turn to ‘time consume’ as they look to hold onto their 2-1 lead

83

AH at 2017-12-03 18:46:25

GOAL! Inevitable perhaps – De Bruyne delivers a delicious ball and Silva does the rest – pure class from the league leaders to break down a brave and determined West Ham rearguard.

#CITYWHU Just as the West Ham United defence need to retain their focus as Man City continue to apply pressure, so do the refereeing team as the game moves into the final 10 minutes!

74

AH at 2017-12-03 18:35:59

#CITYWHU.  Did you notice there how Mike Dean introduced a minor delay into a ‘routine’ throw-in decision, just to make sure his decision was the correct one.  2 good reasons for this (a) more thinking time and (b) good clues are sometimes obtained from the player’s body-language.  The learning ppoint here, take your time !

AH at 2017-12-03 18:32:12

#CITYWHU Thank you to @RedSteva for your tweet – I quote “Mike Dean has a remarkable ability to make refereeing look easy. His fitness is also brilliant, he is always in close proximity to the play.”  Do you agree – let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref.

#CITYWHU 3/4 of the game gone here at the Etihad Stadium and this is a key 10 minutes for the match officials as they seek to retain control – there can be little doubt that they have done well so far.

58

AH at 2017-12-03 18:22:38

Yellow CardSolid and consistent refereeing as De Bruyne leaves a trailing leg on Masuaku, the caution is once again the correct decision

56

AH at 2017-12-03 18:20:45

GOAL! Normal service (!) is resumed as Otamendi fires home from close range and the game is back to parity.

55

AH at 2017-12-03 18:19:07

#CITYWHU Delph tumbles under the challenge of Rice – Mike Dean once again shows his experience and consistency by awarding the free-kick and not cautioning Rice – which would have been a second yellow card for the West Ham defender.

48

AH at 2017-12-03 18:11:21

Whoops – the first mistake by the refereeing team as Simon Long fails to detect a deflection and incorrectly awards a corner kick – perhaps a lack of focus at the start of the second half?

46

AH at 2017-12-03 18:08:28

A good start to the 2nd half for Mike Dean as Obiang offends, further accurate decision making by the match referee.

46

AH at 2017-12-03 18:06:13

#CITYWHU Having worked many times with Mike Dean, I am sure that his dressing room at half-time will be relaxed as the game is going so well for him and his team – time to refocus gents as the 2nd half gets underway.

Half Time

AH at 2017-12-03 17:52:10

Half Time

Game on as the teams depart with a surprising scoreline at half-time – anyone who had a bet on at 25-1 for the Away Team to succeed is certainly getting a good run for their money!

45+2

AH at 2017-12-03 17:48:55

Once again, good Assistant Refereeing, this time from Simon Long, as Aguero strays offside.

43

AH at 2017-12-03 17:47:06

GOAL! Here we go – game on – Ogbonna rises in the penalty area from a set piece, and against all odds, the London team open the scoring. It’s going to be a fascinating second half.

42

AH at 2017-12-03 17:44:28

#CITYWHU In refereeing terms, this game is more like a European game with the Away Team looking not to concede – 3 key words for the refereeing team in this situation – focus, focus and focus.

37

AH at 2017-12-03 17:40:50

Stoppage in play as Kouyate goes down injured, the natives are becoming restless, how much time will Mike Dean allow for time lost ?

36

AH at 2017-12-03 17:38:13

We welcome your comments on this game, and any other refereeing talking points, tweet us @youaretheref, it will be great to hear from you.

31

AH at 2017-12-03 17:34:54

Assistant David Cook is called into action as his decision to indicate Antonio offside is proven to be correct

30

AH at 2017-12-03 17:30:28

#CITYWHU The penal offence count continues to be low, just 2 in the first 30 minutes, and very unusual stat for the Premier League.

27

AH at 2017-12-03 17:28:41

As Man City continue to press, Assistant Daniel Cook, who is patrolling the Home Team defence, must keep focused as his is ‘out of the game’ for long periods.

22

AH at 2017-12-03 17:24:52

#CITYWHU Understandably, the Away Team are in no urgency to restart the game whenever they have the opportunity to delay – at what point does ‘time consuming’ become ‘time wasting’.  It will be interesting to see how Mike Dean manages this situation.

16

AH at 2017-12-03 17:19:13

Yellow Card– Mike Dean takes the first opportunity presented to him as Rice commits a cynical challenge at the half-way line and the caution to the young West Ham United defender is the correct course of action.

15

AH at 2017-12-03 17:16:09

#CITYWHU Just 1 penal offence in the first 15 minutes of the game, Mike Dean would have settled for that at kick-off!

11

AH at 2017-12-03 17:12:54

#CITYWHU Good awareness from Mike Dean as Adrian in the West Ham goal has a read of the paper before placing the ball for a goal-kick!

AH at 2017-12-03 17:08:03

6 minutes gone and possibly the pattern of the game has already been set as Man City have most of the possession – something for the match officials to be aware of

1

AH at 2017-12-03 17:05:30

A key decision very early in the game for Mike Dean as Sterling tumbles in the penalty area, no prolonged appeals for the Home Team players which suggest the call was the correct one.  What do you think – let us know what you think by tweeting us here @youaretheref

No Joe Hart in goal today as part of his loan deal from his parent club, added pressure on Adrian perhaps?

#CITYWHU Mike Dean is the man in charge this afternoon, Simon Long and Daniel Cook are his assistants, 4th official is Mike Jones, fresh from this duties at Hillsborough in the Championship yesterday.  Do you think Premier League referees should officiate in the Championship, let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref

Pre-Match

AH at 2017-12-03 16:49:08

Many think that the visitors will crumble today as the Home Team are so strong, one bookie has them priced at 25-1 to win, that is the strength of feeling that Manchester City will take all 3 points with a degree of comfort, we’ll see as the game unfolds
