Full time summary

RCT at 2017-05-16 22:06:47

FULL TIME SUMMARY -

Firstly FIFA Referee Craig has controlled and managed this game with all yellow cards correctly identified and issued. As we discussed at half time Craig's personality displays that he is a calm and unflustered referee and that his style of movement maintains an untroubled and controlled mindset. However, as I have commented throughout tonight this leaves him playing catch up as balls are played in particular wide left and into that left hand channel from midfield where he is arriving late to pick up and detect any potential infringements. Craig has to then race and catch up into position for the key match decision making. If he read the game better and moved into position sooner he can still maintain his composure to make those big key match decisions (as we discussed during both halves in particular MC attacks). If a key match incident had occurred in the latter part of the build-up then the Referee would have been poorly placed to view it, and that’s the point, a failure to read the game can be costly, fortunately on this particular occasion nothing happened.

I would encourage Craig to show more dynamic movement in his game particularly when moving into the attacking third of the field of play.

Other than that, there were no significant problems this evening. Craig and his team have involved and judged their involvement level well, particularly Scott Ledger who has correctly throughout identified a high number of offside situations.

84

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:45:38

Throw in -  in in front of the technical areas I would have liked to have seen a clear and positive arm signal from Craig for the throw in there seemed to be nothing this all adds to your communication skills

83

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:43:58

Good double save from Ben Foster from De Jesus and from the MC ck a fk to WBA is awarded inside their defending penalty area

Final 10 minutes

Now key for the referee and team to bring this game home safely - full focus and concentration

MC sub 4 Kompany off to be replaced by Stones 24

75

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:36:01

Again in that last breakaway on the left channel for MC then Craig is some way from play should a key match decision be required

74

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:34:29

Nyom comes in with a careless challenge on Sane and I would think that will be his last challenge before a yellow

73

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:33:05

MC advantage clear signal shown by Craig

72

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:32:28

MC ck and the standard position is taken up by Craig, just outside of the penalty area

8 Livermore off 7 Morrison on

62

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:23:13

Again as MC move wide in the left channel Craig is static and then he rushes to catch up this for me is a key area for Craig to work at

60

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:21:05

From the MC ck Richard West signals GK.

MC sub Silva 21 off Zabaleta 5 on for his final game

59

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:19:33

Nyom clips the ball out for a ck to MC as WBA prepare another sub

56

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:18:06

GOAL!

3-0 Y Toure

55

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:17:33

FK to WBA always helps if the AR Richard West in this case signals firstly when so close to his position

54

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:16:27

McClean commits a risky challenge in his own penalty area no penalty kick looks correct though

Offside correctly signalled by Scott but Craig could and should have played the advantage to MC here, if he had just held the whistle MC were on the attack!

46

RCT at 2017-05-16 21:06:57

Early fk to MC detected by Craig

WBA to kick off the 2nd half

Half Time Summary

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:58:30

For me to half time Craig has controlled this game with no yellow or red cards needed or required. Craig's personality displays that he is a calm and unflustered referee and that his style of movement maintains an untroubled and controlled mindset. However, as I have commented tonight this leaves him playing catch up as balls are played wide left and into the left hand channel particularly from midfield where he is arriving late to pick up and detect infringements. Craig has to then race into position for key match decision making. If he read the game better and moved into position sooner he can still maintain his composure to make those big key match decisions (as we discussed following the 30th minute first MC goal). I would encourage Craig to show more dynamic movement in his game particularly when moving into the attacking third of the field of play.

Other than that no significant problems so far this evening, Craig and his team have involved and judged their involvement level well particularly Scott Ledger who has confidently identified a number of offside situations.

Craig Pawson was just entering the penalty area at speed playing catch up. If a key match incident had occurred in the latter part of the build-up then the Referee would have been poorly placed to view it, and that’s the point, a failure to read the game can be costly, fortunately on this particular

46+2 - half time

Half Time

2-0

2 mins added time

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:46:09

42

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:45:30

No foul awarded to MC there seemed to be no advantage signal shown? play has just continued with Craig then making an arm movement not sure what this communicated though?

41

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:43:08

Sane offside correct decision from Scott Ledger - confirmed by replay

Arm / Elbow challenges

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:42:30

There seems to be an increase in this area of challenge as Albrighton of Leicester suffered a nasty elbow challenge here last week from Fernandinho in their last home game. No card was shown.

30

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:33:23

If we go back to the first Man City goal then if we look at Craig`s position then he is chasing directly behind the City attack, if a key decision would have had to be made then Craig would not have had the best view to judge. A wider angle and anticipation of play would have assisted Craig here.

28

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:30:34

Quickly followed up by another GOAL! De Bruyne 2-0

27

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:29:28

GOAL! de jesus 1-0

26

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:28:09

Throw in to WBA and already time delay tactics are being seen. Craig will need to be aware of this

24

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:26:58

Free kick to WBA attacking area and Richard West will need to be fully focussed

23

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:25:19

Richard West has had a quiet first 23 minutes but he will need to remain fully focussed and concentrating as play can quickly change

20

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:22:53

Play stopped following a careless challenge by Livermore, wise to do this in the defending third although there may have been an advantage to City

18

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:20:20

A lot of MC play is coming down the left channel and in that last attack we saw a sudden movement by Craig after the ball was played wide leaving Craig a lot of ground to make up

16

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:17:47

Sane shows good pace and shoots wide also good non offside flag from Ledger

14

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:16:32

Scott Ledger correctly signals de Jesus of Man City off side

11

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:14:54

Sane goes down in a challenge from Nyom it appeared to be outside of the box and Craig seemed to be showing a burst of pace to get into the best viewing position, almost reacting rather being proactive and getting there early.

10

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:12:20

No free kick awarded to City as De Bruyne goes down in a challenge

7

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:09:48

Free kick correctly signalled by Scott Ledger from a close position on the near side touchline

6

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:09:06

Tonight there will be plenty of balls played to Aguero down the centre and also wide so it will be key to aware of player movement and team tactics, I am sure that he will have prepared for this?

4

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:05:43

Advantage to WBA from a fairly central position - advantage signal shown

2

RCT at 2017-05-16 20:03:47

No free kick awarded to WBA with Craig close to the action but not awarding

Tonight`s Referee - Craig Pawson

RCT at 2017-05-16 19:45:59

Referee Biography

Craig Pawson

Craig Pawson made his Premier League debut when he was in charge of Swansea City's clash with Newcastle United on 2 March 2013.

Pawson has been a referee since 1993, working his way up the Football League ladder since the 2008/09 campaign.

The Sheffield & Hallamshire FA referee was then placed in the Select Group of Premier League officials from the 2013/14 season.

Prior to his promotion, the Yorkshire-based official took charge of more than 40 Championship matches and the 2012 League Two Play-Off Final, which saw Crewe Alexandra beat Cheltenham Town 2-0 at Wembley.

Pawson was also in the middle for the all-Premier League match-up between West Ham United and Wigan Athletic in the League Cup during the 2012/13 campaign.

In 2015, Pawson became the seventh referee from England to be selected on the FIFA International Referee List, allowing him to officiate in UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and international fixtures.

The Yorkshireman was the fourth official for the 2015 League Cup Final between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur and then fulfilled the same position for Arsenal's FA Cup Final victory over Aston Villa later in the year.

Runners and Riders: Premier League officials | Week 37

May 11, 2017

Wrapping up the penultimate week is a clash of styles at the Etihad Stadium. Another home game for City to hammer home their advantage in the race for the European places, but WBA will prove the toughest of opponents to break down.

Craig Pawson – all you need to know

Matches in 2016/17: 24 (14 on TV) Fourth official appointments in 2016/17: 18 Football League appointments in 2016/17: 2

Just a few weeks ago, when Liverpool were in town, Craig Pawson was the fourth official and Pep Guardiola gave him a piece of his mind on more than one occasion. Though his ire predominantly related to Michael Oliver’s handling of the match in question, Pawson can’t fail to have been affected by what was a persistent diatribe.

Jon Moss could be the lucky recipient this time, with Pawson out in the middle here.Tony Pulis complained to PGMOL back in 2015 over Pawson’s decision to award his side a goal and then chalk it off after speaking with his assistant…who had failed to raise his flag for any infringement. When he’s good, Pawson is very good, but when he’s having an off day…
