Full time summary

AM at 2016-02-14 19:48:00

Mark Clattenburg has probably officiated in one of the biggest games of the season to date. Make no mistake this was a massive game for all 3 teams. Whilst not decisive it was a very important game for ALL teams as we discussed pre match. 2 Key match judgements were made and for me the penalty kick awarded to Spurs was technically correct and whilst it will be argued long into the night the ball was played in by Rose – Sterling standing in the penalty area has jumped in his attempt to block the ball and the ball has hit the back of his body and brushed onto his elbow and stopped the flight of the ball coming across the MC penalty area with the potential of an attacking move to Spurs denied. At the end of the day whilst some will say harsh, you cannot argue the big decision it took a top referee to make this call and that is why Mark Clattenburg was appointed. We talk about consistency and he was also in the right place to make the judgement in line with the penalty area line with the offence occurring just inside the penalty area. So a number of judgements would have flashed through his mind as that instant moment. There will be plenty of discussion on this decision for sure!

2nd key match decision – 81 minutes AR John Brooks has incorrectly flagged Aguero offside when he was through on goal (could have been 2-1? that we will never know through an incorrect call!) I mentioned JB`s position which was forward of the second rear most Spurs defender at the moment the ball was played to Aguero and this I feel was the reason for this incorrect judgement. Some 90 seconds later Spurs have scored a goal to make it 1-2 how key decisions can change games.

We discussed at half time the following of Mark Clattenburg`s Strengths and he went to demonstrate these in a 2nd half of high intensity and mental strength.

Very good match control of a very high profile game!

We discussed at half time Toure probably escaping a yellow but we did feel that MC could have received support from a colleague for his only missed challenge of the game. This is were you rely on teamwork.

Key factors today from our referee.

  • A stepped approach to match control, talking to players, judgement of careless and reckless challenges.
  • Getting into great viewing positions in and around the penalty area to get those all-important big decisions right!
  • High skill shown in judging the difference between acceptable contact and what exceeded his tolerance level as we discussed throughout the game. Mark had a game plan in the first half and he adjusted it in the 2nd half with a strong early approach to producing yellow cards to good effect.
  • Movement at breakaway attacks by holding back in the left hand channel in midfield and then sweeping in behind play with an explosive sprint following play into or around the penalty area.
  • Very good communication signals seen throughout and Mark was always trying to get the best out of the game at every moment.

Stuart Burt has supported Mark well and kept low profile throughout.

John Brooks I have mentioned the incorrect offside call for Man City in the 81st minute. I also felt that he was missing in his body language and support at free kick awards. This is a learning process for all and the importance for an Assistant Referee is being in line with the 2nd rearmost defender at all times for these so crucial for offside judgements.

GOAL! 1-2 From an incorrect offside call from JB with Aguero through on goal we now have a Spurs 2nd goal – HOW THINGS CAN CHANGE ON THE TURN OF AN INCORRECT OFFSIDE CALL!

81

AM at 2016-02-14 18:55:30

Poor decision from JB who signals MC offside (Aguero) level with 2nd rearmost defender when the ball was played why? he was in front of the 2nd rearmost defender – not in correct position to judge

81

AM at 2016-02-14 18:53:48

Better form JB as reacts and GETS to the goal line to signal a ck for MC

Spurs sub

AM at 2016-02-14 18:52:46

20 off and 11 on as Spurs look to hold on for a point

Big penalty calls on Valentines weekend!

AM at 2016-02-14 18:51:29

Robert Madley has made a big brave and correct call in the Crystal Palace v Watford game (grappling) and so has MC today – what we need is for other referees to follow in these big, brave, strong and correct big decision calls.

MC sub 22 off 11 on

MC sub 72 on 6 off as they now chase the game

Big Decisions by our top officials today!

AM at 2016-02-14 18:36:11

Both Martin Atkinson and Mark Clattenburg have made big calls today. This is what it is about making big brave calls as they are seen in real time. Replays show Sterling`s arm in an unnatural position and the ball has brushed his ribs and into his arm in his jump to stop the movement of the ball and therefore penalty kick award is correct.

Spurs penalty kick

57

AM at 2016-02-14 18:30:52

Tempo up after the penalty award against the home team and up steps MC with his match control. All other officials need to also be aware.

55

AM at 2016-02-14 18:29:23

Yellow Card

Wimmer yellow card reckless challenge correct – from the MC free kick it hits the bar and away to safety

52

AM at 2016-02-14 18:28:10

Penalty to Spurs following the award of a handball against Sterling.

GOAL! 0-1 – Man City unhappy with the award but MC adamant handball replays show MC in a great position to judge the offence occurred in the penalty area and a penalty kick awarded more discussion on this judgement to follow…

51

AM at 2016-02-14 18:23:54

MC did not award a free kick for handball to MC there as he looked to blow his whistle but he was in fact pointing to his face!

50

AM at 2016-02-14 18:22:44

Pace and intensity of the game are a key area for MC to judge as MC says no foul on Toure

47

AM at 2016-02-14 18:20:58

MC fk awarded close to JB following a foul by Rose – good management of free kick seen here

46

AM at 2016-02-14 18:19:04

Yellow Card

Kompany reckless and no complaints – MC approaches the 2nd half with a no tolerant approach! he is setting his game plan out in this half

The FA have put a junior club who have been the subject of referee abuse allegations on probation for the rest of the season.

You Are The Ref highlighted a detailed email from the father of a teenage match official who was allegedly harassed by the coaches of an Under 15s team for the duration of a recent game.

Half time summary

AM at 2016-02-14 18:14:33

Both teams are locked together on this Valentine`s triple day.

Mark Clattenburg – Dier`s yellow card was correct in the 44th minute – the only other talking point in the first was the non yellow for Toure – you could argue that he missed his 2nd challenge but maybe he could of received support from one of his colleagues here?

Some positives to date and are as I highlighted.

  • Very good match control to date of a very high profile game!
  • A stepped approach to match control, talking to players. He is giving the game every chance to breathe.
  • Getting into great viewing positions in and around the penalty area to get those all-important big decisions right!
  • High skill shown in judging the difference between acceptable contact and what exceeded his tolerance level
  • Movement at breakaway attacks by holding back in the left hand channel in midfield and then sweeping in behind play with an explosive sprint following play into or around the penalty area.
  • Good communication hand / arm  to all why he has awarded decisions.

Stuart Burt has shown a good flag technique and movement.

John Brooks – Has called the Spurs offside correct. I would just like to see him look more focussed and improve his body language he looks fearful and could and should have supported MC with a free kick directly in front of him (36)

Mike Dean uses all his experience to discuss with Managers MC approach to this game.

41

AM at 2016-02-14 17:58:10

Good detection of a foul by Ali – from the Spurs ck – again great position and an unflustered award by MC – HE IS LOOKING CALM AND COMPOSED TODAY

38

AM at 2016-02-14 17:55:25

Again MC right in the correct and close view to judge no free kick. He communicates why and when so close how can you argue! it is when you are out of position and a long way from the action that you can argue!

36

AM at 2016-02-14 17:53:08

Push in the back Spurs player on MC player –  right in front of JB who decides no free kick but MC correctly awards – these are situations when you need to signal as an Assistant

34

AM at 2016-02-14 17:51:08

Kompany spoken to as he is careless and MC chooses his words carefully to the player and demonstrates why he has awarded the free kick.

32

AM at 2016-02-14 17:49:09

MC gets in the right place to judge that last MC attack – wide on the left channel, close to play and a great angle to judge – penalty area wide left line

30

AM at 2016-02-14 17:47:21

JB signals a free kick to MC – my only observation here would be his body language which just looks a bit casual – just an impression that he gives. Important to keep focus and to be on your toes!

Mark Clattenburg

AM at 2016-02-14 17:45:01

We are viewing one of the top referees in the world today and it is important to read his tactics and game plan. Important to try and read what he is doing in a red hot atmosphere of a game today.

25

AM at 2016-02-14 17:42:16

Fernandinho careless and this challenge in real time is punished by a free kick as MC continues with his management of the players and the overall game.

23

AM at 2016-02-14 17:39:58

Wimmer CARELESS CHALLENGE on Toure a reversal of the previous challenge! punished by a free kick to MC.

21

AM at 2016-02-14 17:38:11

Toure reckless on Wimmer and is fortunate not to have received a yellow card for that challenge? could SB have assisted here as the challenge by Toure was missed and is a surprise not detected?.

Throw in signal from SB

AM at 2016-02-14 17:35:58

Awarded to Spurs, good technique of flag and retention. Again if you are lining at the weekend then keep an eye on technique to gain those additional marks and give you the edge in assessment.

17

AM at 2016-02-14 17:34:16

Further fk to MC in front of TA. Spurs game plan clear as they attempt to break up play.

15

AM at 2016-02-14 17:32:35

A number of early fks as MC looks to assert his authority. He is calm in his delivery of the free kick. Have you noticed the correct tone of the whistle? such an aid to communication. Let your whistle do the taking make it work for you! think about this area in your next game.

14

AM at 2016-02-14 17:30:30

JB first offside correct against Spurs as the ball enters the MC goal. JB in line to judge

13

AM at 2016-02-14 17:29:35

Fernando is careless and is spoken to by MC AGAIN MC IS TAKING HIS TIME

13

AM at 2016-02-14 17:28:19

MC is looking calm and composed as he rightly awards another fk to MC.

10

AM at 2016-02-14 17:26:57

CK to Man City – I notice that MC always blows his whistle to signal restart. A number of other Premier League Referees do not. An aid to communication here and is good practice.

8

AM at 2016-02-14 17:25:28

Handball awarded against Spurs again good communication from MC to advise all why he had awarded.

7

AM at 2016-02-14 17:24:35

CK to MC positive early signal and focus from SB. Did you notice body language and concentration as he awarded a ck

6

AM at 2016-02-14 17:23:21

Goal kick to MC sharp and positive hand / arm signal from MC to signal

3

AM at 2016-02-14 17:21:32

Toure 42 of MC commits a late challenge and is spoken to at length by MC. Toure is clear in the message delivered by MC. MC is giving the game every chance early on.

Thanks to Mark Halsey for taking us through Aston Villa v Liverpool. Now onto a game that whilst it maybe not decisive, it is certainly a very important one!

With Arsenal coming from behind to beat Leicester this leaves the Title chase again wide open as we see Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur.

What a fabulous game of football between Arsenal and Leicester, lots of talking points, let us know your views on the referees performance @youaretheref
