Manchester City v Swansea City

Full time summary

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:40:42

Full time summary – Mike has shown overall a very good level of match control in this game. How has he achieved this?

A stepped approach to match control, he has talked to players, correct showing of yellow cardS (although we did discuss the yellow card to Sterling at half time and this was a card that could have been avoided).

Mike`s pace and movement saw him achieve good viewing positions in and around the penalty area to get those all important  key decisions right –

His body language is positive and he correctly applied basic application of law. Mike has managed the game / event well and his accuracy in decision making has been very good, not fussy and very good fitness levels overall which has given him optimum viewing positions.

With regards to the Swansea goal in the 80th minute then the consensus from YATR is that the goal is good as Dyer in the offside position is some distance from his position to the MC goal keeper`s line of vision therefore not interfering with the MC goal keeper.

Good flag signal from Ian Hussin fk to MC

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:18:46

4 minutes added time shown by Lee Mason as Mike from a close position says no fk to Swansea.

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:17:31

No penalty to MC correct as ball hits the Swansea players stomach

Incorrect offside from Adrian Holmes as Jesus is clearly onside when the ball is played to him. Concentration guys come on…

Swansea Goal

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:15:34

For the Swansea goal Dyer was in an offside position and in direct line of the ball and goal keeper – would the Assistant Ian Hussin had a clear view from the line? looking side on? clearly controversial what is your view? should the goal have stood? I wonder what advise he offered to Mike? let us know..

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:12:11

Swansea sub – Llorente 9 off Baston 10 on

Man City sub Sterling 7 off Augero 10 on

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:10:47

Siguedsson scores to make it 1-1 well on that goal Nathan Dyer looked to be exactly in line with the goal keepers view in an offside position so should the goal have stood? he was directly in line with the ball and goalkeepers view.

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:08:12

Swansea fk as Mike moves into the scene of the action and has a glare at Zabaleta – in other words steady you have only just come on I am keeping an eye on you.

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:06:29

MC fk slight delay in award a Mike was checking if he could play the advantage to MC.

MC sub –

17 De-Bruyne off Zabaleta 5 on

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:04:21

We are still only 1-0! so Swansea have all to play for MC not safe yet. Could be a very interesting final 15 minutes and added time

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:02:56

Jack Cork 24 Yellow Cardreckless challenge

Swansea Sub Carroll 42 off Dyer 12 on

FK to Swansea as Ian Hussin assists Mike with the fk award

RCT at 2017-02-05 16:00:52

MC ck in that last attack Mike again has shown good pace and movement to keep up with play also a good viewing angle and proximity

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:59:43

Another good non offside flag from Adrian Holmes who was in a good position – in line with the 2nd rearmost Swansea defender to judge

Tweet from Neil Sherringham

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:58:10

Tweet from Neil Sherringham – Neil – Mike indicated that this yellow card was for persistent infringement –

llorente for Swansea just led with his arm didn’t make contact with the head and got booked ?

Llorente – SwanseaYellow CardMike indicates for persistent infringement

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:48:28

Swansea ck take a look at Mike`s position this is text book at this level (or any level) and gives you a great view of players positions just outside the penalty area.

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:45:16

MC are looking comfortable but this is a game when you have to fully keep your concentration levels very high as it could change either way

Tweet form Lauren Whiteman

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:43:20

A tweet from Lauren Whiteman – what do you suggest the FA could put in place to protect grassroots referees?

One local league Lauren are planning a spectator silence weekend which all local grassroots clubs have to abide by! what do you think about this?

let us know your thoughts @you are the

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:38:33

Ball not fully out of play for a throw in so no flag from Ian Hussin always more difficult judgements the closer the play is to you

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:37:07

Excellent fk from Sigurdsson pulls off a great save from Caballero – again keep an eye on Mike`s position

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:35:15

Tweet from Luke Jack Conlaund – agree with you Jack, although I think he was advised by Ian Hussin, please see my half time summary…..

Ridiculous decision from Mike Dean. Strange call not a dive for Me. Sterling very hard done by. Oh dear Mike.

2nd half kicks off

Swansea kick off

Half Time Summary

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:27:36

For me to half time Mike has shown:

  • Very good overall match control of a very high profile live TV game!
  • A stepped approach to match control, he has talked to players, correct showing of a yellow to De- Bruyne as Olsson was moving into a great attacking position for Swansea.
  • He is getting into great viewing positions in and around the penalty area to get those all important  key decisions right –

His body language is positive and he is applying basic application of law.

Just the one area that we discussed was Sterling`s yellow card which I thought was harsh but Mike would have received communication from Ian Hussin who has advised Mike that this was simulation and therefore a yellow card. In these situations we have to absolutely sure that the player has committed a deliberate act of simulation and in this situation it was not. Sterling will now have to careful for the 2nd half as he is now on a yellow card.

What are your thoughts so far?

1 minute added time shown by Lee Mason 4th Official

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:17:01

Yellow Card

Sterling yellow card for simulation – I am sure that he would have received assistance from Ian Hussin on the nearside touchline, however that was a harsh one for me as Fabianski comes racing out and Sterling was racing towards the gk- no penalty kick and nothing further I think would have sufficed here what is your view?

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:13:51

Yellow Card

De- Bruyne reckless on Olsson and is quite correctly shown the yellow card

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:12:48

No fk to MC – Mike well placed to judge

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:11:37

Mike again ensures the correct placement of that last S. throw in with the help of the spectators in close proximity to the placement.

Leicester City v Manchester United ko 4pm with Andy Hogg from YATR leading on the commentary…..

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:09:00

As MC continue to press for a 2nd goal the ball runs out of play for a S. gk

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:07:33

Cork careless on Jesus – awarded by Mike from a close position – fk to MC

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:04:26

So far Mike is managing the game very wel,l no cards, none needed, low profile and judging his involvement very well indeed.

Your thoughts? on Twitter @youaretheref or e-mail at

RCT at 2017-02-05 15:02:02

FK to MC foul by Fernandez as Mike signals with a clear and straight arm to indicate direction of fk. Also good use of the whistle – good tone to indicate severity of offence. Fernandez has a quick look and sees no yellow card coming from Mike`s pocket.

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:57:42

Good non offside flag from Ian Hussin – a difficult one to judge with a few MC players potentially in offside positions.

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:56:17

MC offside and did you notice how Mike kept his arm aloft from the indirect fk? until Caballero touched the ball? again basic refereeing but an area we need to constantly remind ourselves of.

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:54:34

In that last Toure fk replay did you notice the excellent view Mike had as Toure took the fk? he had a clear view especially of the S. defending players in the defensive wall – potential handball – good refereeing here

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:52:25

Good positioning from Mike at that last MC ck – followed up by a fk to Swansea foul on Fer by Toure – followed up by a fk to MC – spray out for the 1st time and from the fk we see a great save by Fabianski

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:49:41

Tweet from Luke Jack Conlaund

Mike Dean needs to make sure he does not get involved when unnecessary in this match which is important to both

Fully agree Luke and so far he is exactly following your tweet

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:46:58

1st offside of the game signalled by Ian Hussin on the near side touchline

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:46:11

Mike insistent on the correct placement of that last Swansea throw in – basic refereeing but correct in his management of the game.

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:44:49

Man City look in impressive form attacking right from the start as Swansea look to be playing a 4-5-1 formation clearly looking for a point they will have to come out now and attack and the Match Officials will be aware of the change in formation. I would also expect to see the tempo increase from this goal.

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:42:08

De Jesus to make it 1-0

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:41:30

Just prior to the penalty shout I thought there looked to be a Man City player offside? we have not seen a side on view so we cannot be sure?

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:39:18

No penalty – Mawson and De Jesus tangle together but not enough there for a penalty kick and Mike is very well positioned – stationery – to make this correct judgement

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:35:47

FK to Swansea good flag indication from Adrian Holmes as Kolarov commits a foul challenge

Assistant Referees

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:34:36

Mike Dean continues to excel and you can’t ignore him – and frankly for all of the right reasons. Dean is right up there this season as one of the best in the business.

You can’t knock him when it comes to applying the laws of the game correctly. Top notch Mike.

Pre Match Build Up

RCT at 2017-02-05 14:13:54

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the first of our live REF CAM commentary games today. Later at 4pm we are covering Leicester City v Manchester United.

However, back to the first game of the day..

Swansea will be looking to make it three Premier League wins on the spin when they face Manchester City, live on REF CAM commentary.

Recently appointed head coach Paul Clement has had an immediate impact, sending his team out to win successive Premier League games for the first time this season, moving them out of the relegation places.

However, the Swans still possess the leakiest defence in the league having conceded 52 goals this campaign. They have only kept one clean sheet in their last 14 league matches and will be tested against Pep Guardiola’s side, who hammered West Ham 0-4 at the London Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite being off the pace in the title race, City are two points better off than after 23 games last season and have beaten Swansea in six of their last seven meetings.

Can the Manchester City manager somehow plot his way to a third win over Swansea City this season? The first question comes after the striker and the No1 keeper were left out for the 4-0 win at West Ham United. The second because Guardiola talked up Paul Clement’s impact since taking over four games ago.
