Manchester City v Southampton

RH at 2016-10-23 15:36:41

So the Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • A steady display from Mark Clattenburg
  • Not as sharp as usual, the five week break may explain that
  • Some inconsistency with early second half reckless challenges
  • Assistant Simon Bennett is spot on with a fist half offside flag that ruled out a City ‘goal’
  • The Referee was in complete control throughout

No key match errors here today from Mark Clattenburg and his team, Simon Bennetts correct first half flag for an Aguero offside ensured that. But some minor positional glitches and some early second half inconsistency on reckless challenges suggested that the five week break Mark Clattenburg has endured has taken away a little sharpness. In the closing minutes of the game Assistant Referee Jake Collin was flagging for a foul to Southampton as  City continued to attack, normally Mark Clattenburg just doesn’t allow that to go undetected. However the Referee was always in complete control of this game and he and his team will not be the talking point after this game. Both Assistants gave good support, but my message after this game to the PGMOL is, unless Mark Clattenburg needs resting for an injury or illness reasons, give him regular games please!

Full Time

Summary to follow

RH at 2016-10-23 15:24:35

It appeared that Jake Collin was flagging for foul on Boufal but not picked up by the Referee, fortunately nothing came of it!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:22:44

Southampton is no rush to take a throw, the Referee is on hand to make sure they do!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:20:40

Yellow CardIt was coming, Foster shown the yellow card for delaying the restart!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:19:44

A minimum of 5 minutes added time!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:19:16

Southampton’s defensive record is bettered only by Spurs, but their Achilles’s heel is that they’ve conceded 4 penalties!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:15:04

Stay with us on Refcam because coming up at 4.00 is the fascinating encounter between Chelsea and Manchester United! Jose’s return to the Bridge! The Referee is Martin Atkinson and my colleague Guy Beale will be taking you though that one!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:13:32

Mark Clattenburg moved quickly to track that run by Aguero, he saw the closing effort from around the ‘D’ on other days I’ve seen him run around the outside and view that sort of play closer in!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:10:47

Charlie Austin leaves the field, he’s been on the end of some robust challenges today!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:07:01

Well the tempo of this game has lowered, its noticeably less competitive than the opening 15 minutes of this half!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:04:43

I liked the wide arc that Mark Clattenburg took there as Redmond attacked for Saints, demonstrating his superb mobility in attacking situations like that!

RH at 2016-10-23 15:01:08

Still interesting to note the contrasting attacking styles of these teams, Southampton proving more direct in their play, its noticeable that its easier for this and any other Referee to track.

RH at 2016-10-23 14:57:21

It was end to end there which gave Mark Clattenburg a chance to demonstrate his explosive sprinting!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:52:14

Pleasing that Mark Clattenburg has settled down this half because I felt that the Kolarov caution was harsh and a caution by Gundogan was clearly missed but the subsequent yellow cards to Kompany and Aguero have demonstrated a better consistency from the Referee!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:49:57

Looks  like Van Dijk will have a headache after that one, but no malice in that clash of heads with Kompany!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:47:13

Yellow CardAguero now Reckless on Austin, same result!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:45:41

Yellow CardKompany Reckless on Van Dijk and rightly earns a cuation

RH at 2016-10-23 14:44:27

Kompany floors Tadic with a clear push right in front of the Referee!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:43:31

GOAL!  Iheanacho draws City level!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:42:31

Mark Clattenburg was well placed for that Gundogan reckless challenge on Romeu so its puzzling why he didn’t pick it up?

RH at 2016-10-23 14:41:16

TV picture clearly showing that Gundogan was gilt of a Reckless challenge on Romeu, which he got away with, he then picks up a Yellow Cardhimself for a reckless challenge on the same City player

RH at 2016-10-23 14:39:06

Yellow CardKoloarov blocks Austin and earns a caution, I must confess to feeling a bit of sympathy for the City man there

RH at 2016-10-23 14:38:03

Clatts just needs to take here as he’s choosing to operate in the same City attacking channel as some of  the City players

RH at 2016-10-23 14:35:42

Good advantage there by the Referee as Fenandinho was held in midfield and what could have been a delayed whistle turned into a cracking advantage!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:33:17

The second half has started!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:24:35

A solid first half from Mark Clattenburg and his team, the only talking point being Simon Bennetts correct offside flag when Aguero attempted to play the ball before Stones netted, which caught out me and the Sky commentary team! Mark Clattenburg got too close in the City attacking channel once and a couple of times got a little too near to play in midfield, but as I said that’s understandable as he hasn’t Refereed a Premier League game for five weeks. A good caution for Clasie’s rash challenge and its looking promising for the second half.

RH at 2016-10-23 14:17:40

Half Time

RH at 2016-10-23 14:16:05

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played

RH at 2016-10-23 14:15:36

Yellow CardMark Clattenburg well placed to penalise that Reckless challenge by Clasie

RH at 2016-10-23 14:14:41

Simon Bennett supporting the Referee well with a flag for a holding offence by Aguero!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:13:14

A good delayed whistle there by the Referee as Redmond was dumped to the ground!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:10:59

Stay with us on Refcam because coming up at 4.00 is the fascinating encounter between Chelsea and Manchester United! Jose’s return to the Bridge! The Referee is Martin Atkinson and my colleague Guy Beale will be taking you though that one!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:10:07

Its noticeable that when Southampton attack they move the ball around quickly in the City half, as City attack they move the ball around slower, that’s making positioning and reading of the game more challenging for the Referee

RH at 2016-10-23 14:05:51

Well the disallowed goal incident is cleared up as Aguero was offside as the ball was played in, a good call by Simon Bennett as the City player clearly attempted to play the ball, well done!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:03:11

That was not a goal, and we’re waiting to get another look at that incident!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:02:20

Stones atones for his earlier error with a City equaliser!

RH at 2016-10-23 14:00:55

Romeu with a high arm in that midfield aerial challenge and rightly penalised with a free kick

RH at 2016-10-23 13:57:37

Redmond on target! Saints take the lead!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:56:29

Fernandinho getting a stern warning for that robust challenge on Austin, i’ll go with that, in this particular game that’s a challenge that can be managed

RH at 2016-10-23 13:53:55

Jake Collin with a great non flag there as Koloarov played Southampton on!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:52:34

A great follow through into the City penalty area by the Referee to correctly judge that Redmond got the last touch, pure Clattenburg!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:48:21

Interesting that the Referee is glancing behind his back to see where wide players are, so that he doesn’t get too close to the action!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:46:57

Twice in that last City attack Mark Clattenburg was forced to back off, the first time he got into trouble by getting too close to the ball, but he learned because the second time he glanced to see where the ball was going and took evasive action!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:43:48

A one handed gesture by Mark Clattenburg in midfield inviting City to play on in a game where possession is 50/50 % at the moment!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:40:35

No pushing and shoving at that first corner, lets hope that continues!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:39:14

As play has stretched out more and moved from end to end Mark Clattenburg has been able to get into full stride and just his range more, that offence by Redmond being a case in point

RH at 2016-10-23 13:37:29

Good spot by the Referee as Romeu was late on De Bruyne!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:35:06

Mark Clattenburg just a little too close to play in midfield on a couple of occasions but I guess that’s down to the fact that its five weeks since his last Premier League game

RH at 2016-10-23 13:32:48

First free kick of the game and its a straight forward careless challenge by Clasie

RH at 2016-10-23 13:31:42

If you are watching the game on TV, Simon Bennett is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Jake Collin is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2016-10-23 13:30:28

Our match Referee Mark Clattenburg gets us underway!

RH at 2016-10-23 13:28:58

The teams and Match Officials have entered the field of play!

Mark Clattenburg: Manchester City v Southampton

Assistants: J. Collin and S. Bennett Fourth official: K. Friend

Finally back where he belongs, Mark Clattenburg still missed out on the big game of the weekend.

After inexplicably being left out in week eight by PGMOL, they’ve seen the error of their ways, albeit this is still only the fifth top-level appointment of the season for England’s top official.

Southampton shouldn’t be discounted from this one. Although it’s one of their more arduous journey’s and against opponents who are formidable when on their game, City will be playing on the back of what is likely to be a gruelling examination at Barcelona in the Champions League.

The result, performance and outcome of that game could well affect this and City’s league form has stuttered a little of late.

Claude Puel finally seems to be getting things together with the Saints, who sit in a respectable mid-table position at start of play.

They’ve conceded less than their hosts so could provide a more difficult opponent than perhaps many expect.

A free-flowing affair will be appreciated by both teams and if it’s refereeing controversy you’re looking for, you won’t find any here.
