MANCHESTER CITY V MANCHESTER UNITED

MANCHESTER CITY V MANCHESTER UNITED

Commentary By: MARK HALSEY

FINAL SCORE: 0 - 1

Manchester United win the Manchester derby 1 – 0. It’s fantastic to see a young Rashford come through the ranks to play in the first team and score the winner in the Manchester derby, he will be on top of the world and rightly so. This wasn’t a difficult game to referee and on the whole the players were well behaved but still the game still needs refereeing. Michael’s positioning, his movement his managing of the game was very good and as I said earlier shows great talent but in today’s climate it’s about getting the key match decisions correct and for me that’s Michael’s achilles heel and today that showed me that I am correct in my analyst today with the big penalty incident at the end of the first half which in my opinion was a clear penalty to MU. Michael was in an excellent position to judge but unfortunately didn’t recognise the infringement. Let’s praise him though for not issuing MU12 for a second yellow where I felt it was just a careless challenge. He was assisted well by the 2 assistants.

Full Time

MH at 2016-03-20 18:53:57

MC10 looks for a free kick but nothing forth coming.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:51:53

Correct foul given for MU.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:50:52

To be fair to Michael his fitness and movement is still very good this late in the game continually giving himself good viewing angles.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:48:28

An additional 6 minutes added time.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:47:23

A bit of indecision between assistant Beswick and referee over a throw.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:44:58

Correct call MC25 fouls MU9.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:42:55

Correct call no penalty after MC and MU players come together in the box.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:42:01

Going back to MU12 challenge we see far to many cheap cheap yellow cards given. Let’s praise Michael for that.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:41:05

Substitution for MU. MU36 OFF, MU51 ON.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:37:20

Another foul by MU12, it’s a careless challenge not reckless for me I agree with not a second yellow card as I said it’s just a careless challenge.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:33:54

Yellow CardThat’s a caution, MC20 for a reckless challenge on MU35.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:30:38

3 corner’s in a row putting the pressure on now, MC need to get something out of this game.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:29:37

O how did them miss that a great chance for MC to equalize. Another corner to MC.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:27:57

Substitution for MU. MU31 ON, MU8 OFF.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:27:24

Foul by MU12. He has to be careful as he is already on a yellow card.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:25:53

Michael constantly managing the players at set plays by engaging verbally with them, This is good practice.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:23:46

MC10 hits the post.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:20:13

Substitution for MU. MU5 OFF, MU25 ON.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:19:01

The game seems to have settled down a bit making it a bit easier for Michael.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:16:47

Excellent advantage to MC.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:12:45

Good save by the MC sub keeper.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:11:46

Michael’s got to work hard this second half, he has to stay fully focused and his concentration level has to be at a high.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:10:41

Substitution for MC, MC26 OFF, MC14 ON.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:07:41

Substitution for MC, MC1 OFF, MC13 ON.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:07:07

Looks like Joe Hart is in trouble, just being carried off. Not looking good with the International games coming up next week.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:06:07

I spoke about Michael having a great talent but his area of weakness is having the courage and bravery to make key match decisions, is this penalty incident another one that he hasn’t had the courage to make.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:02:49

MU to get the second half underway.

MH at 2016-03-20 18:01:24

It’s been a very quiet first half up to that incident with Michael’s recognition  of foul non foul of a good standard, his positioning and movement has been very good but he has to come out for the second half confident and strong refereeing otherwise this game will run away from him. I was surprised he didn’t take any disciplinary action after the coming together of the players after the penalty incident.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:55:31

As I said the half time whistle couldn’t have come soon enough as the tempo of the game has gone right up. Especially with that incident involving MC26 on MU39, as I said in real time I called a penalty, having seen the reply I haven’y changed my mind. MC26 know’s exactly what he is doing clear contact, MU39 has gone past him and he deliberately plays the man and stops his progress. Michael was in an excellent position to judge. For me he has got that one wrong.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:48:31

Half Time

MH at 2016-03-20 17:47:10

I think that’s a penalty.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:46:35

Michael will be happy to blow the half time whistle as the tempo has just started to rise.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:45:54

A minimum of 2 minutes added time.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:45:26

Michael just needs to be aware of what’s going on between MU17 and MC10.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:43:46

MU17 and MC10 both feet up no foul given correct. Van Gaal complaining to the 4th official, sorry Van this is the Premier League not European Leagues.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:41:48

Excellent dynamic sprinting by Michael to keep up with play and giving a free kick to MU after a foul by MC26.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:40:09

Remember to tune into tomorrows ref show talking about all this weekends controversial incidents from this weekend and there have been a few.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:36:42

Foul by MC20 correct free kick given.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:32:55

Having just seen the replay he has got it wrong MC10 was onside.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:32:20

I think John Brookes has got that offside wrong on MC10.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:30:54

Well done Michael tried to play an advantage after a foul on MU35, no advantage brought the play back and he let the players know verbally. Good man management.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:29:06

Michael’s recognition of foul non foul is excellent at present.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:27:24

Offside correctly given by John Brookes.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:26:31

Hand ball given against MU, free kick given to MC.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:26:00

MC& going off after the challenge by MU8. which was just a careless challenge.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:25:22

Substitution for MC. MC7 OFF, MC6 ON.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:21:59

MC26 should of scored.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:21:25

Careless challenge by MU8 on MC7, players receiving treatment.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:20:30

Again it’s pleasing to see Michael’s fitness and positioning is excellent. Getting himself into good viewing angles to make the correct decisions gaining the trust of the players.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:18:39

Free kick to MC after a foul by MU5.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:16:56

What a start for the 18 year old, he sold MC26 down the river by easily going past him and putting it past Hart.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:15:41

GOAL!MU39

MH at 2016-03-20 17:15:02

Good save by the MU keeper.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:14:39

Good management at corner kick talking to the players. Re holding.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:13:55

Last week I felt he let to much go in the first half of the Everton V Chelsea game which lead to players getting niggly.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:12:33

It’s pleasing to see Michael picking up the small fouls in the first 12 minutes.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:11:29

Yellow Cardand it is. Correctly shown to MU12 for a deliberate pull back.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:10:34

Has to be a yellow card after a foul by MU12 on MC10.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:09:17

Foul by MU35 on MC21. Correct decision.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:08:35

Well done Micheal stamping his authority on the game after a MC player gone flying into a challenge. Letting everybody know that he is not tolerating them sort of challenges.Although there was no contact having a word with the player and managing the player.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:04:53

This is a game where Michael has to set his tolerance levels at very high when challenges are being made as we don’t want to see to many cheap cautions. First free kick of the game foul by MU9 on MC26. correctly given.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:00:48

First corner after 15 seconds to MC.

MH at 2016-03-20 17:00:04

Manchester City to get the first half underway.

MH at 2016-03-20 16:58:55

Teams are out on the pitch.

MH at 2016-03-20 16:57:11

Good afternoon and welcome to the second of our super Sunday Derby’s Manchester City V Manchester United. This is a massive game for both clubs. Whilst both teams have dropped points when they shouldn’t have done, 3 points are a must as Champion League places are at stake, so I think we will be in for a pulsating game. Your referee for today is Michael Oliver, whilst he has come in for some criticism in recent weeks for not having the bravery or courage to make that big key match decision when it needs to be made. Although he has great talent he needs to toughen up when needed. Michael has refereed 18 games to date, showing a total of 66 yellow cards at an average of 3.6 per game and 4 red cards. He will be assisted by John Brookes technical area side, Gary Beswick and 4th official is Andre Marriner. Lets hope they can carry on the excellent performance seen earlier by Martin Atkinson and his officials.
