Manchester City v Liverpool

RD at 2014-08-25 22:04:24

Match summary:

The referee, Michael Oliver, and his colleagues showed why they are on the FIFA list after a mature performance, where their control was never in doubt. Consistent throughout with two cautions correctly issued in a dignified manner. He is undoubtedly a very competent referee and his work rate and movement were impressive tonight. This will please Keith Hackett who suggested that this was lacking to a degree in last weeks’ game at Burnley. All credit to Michael for responding in such a positive manner. His colleagues were well motivated by his leadership and they supported him well with sound judgements that matched his own. In poor conditions, his reading of intent was very sound and his overall management of a potentially difficult game was first class. He employed a safe refereeing approach and did not take any unnecessary risks, playing the advantage clause only when it was deemed appropriate.Congratulations to the whole team for their performance.

Watch out for the Ref Show this week.

Half time analysis.

This has been a really good performance for the refereeing team. They have worked hard to keep a firm grip on proceedings and the game has benefitted accordingly. A timely caution for Toure for unsporting behaviour cannot be criticised and reinforced referee Oliver’s control. In their dressing room they will be pleased with their performance but will also know that they have another game to manage in the second half, especially as fatigue starts to play a part. Safe refereeing has been a feature of Oliver’s performance and he needs to maintain this approach and not take any risks, especially as the rain will make life difficult for the players. His colleagues will need to keep focused also and match their sound decision making so far. Their movement has kept them in touch with play. Signals have been precise and helpful to the referee when necessary. Keep up this effort and reap the rewards of your efforts.

Good luck for the next half.

RD at 2014-08-25 20:46:40

RD at 2014-08-25 19:56:05

Tonight’s match officials are Michael Oliver (referee) and he will be assisted by Stuart Burt and Darren England. All three are FIFA colleagues, such is the importance of this game, at this early stage in the season. 4th Official is Craig Pawson.

I have already mentioned the weather and this could pose those extra problems for the referee and his colleagues, as players deliver misplaced passes, slip on a potential wet or slippery surface or use the conditions as excuses for ill timed challenges. Extra vigilance will be required throughout the whole game. Nonetheless, this is the sport we all love and the more contentious incidents we witness, the more we enjoy the discussion afterwards.

We shall be covering any talking points, as usual, in our weekend round up on the Ref Show later this week. Do not miss this open and honest discussion with Keith Hackett and former Premier League officials, who will not shirk from giving you their views.

We wish our colleagues all the very best at the Etihad Stadium as we await kick off.

RD at 2014-08-25 19:33:02

Tonight we are covering the Manchester City v Liverpool game at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. This ground has a capacity in excess of 46,000 and there will not be many vacant seats to be seen. The weather could very well play a major part in deciding the result of this game, as we have typical Manchester weather likely for this interesting encounter so early in the season.

Whilst the outcome of this contest will not decide who wins the Premier League, both sides will want to continue to give a good account of themselves after securing all three points in their first game of the season last weekend away at Newcastle and at home against Southampton respectively.

Last season saw Manchester City come out on top to win the Premier League title and they have added to their squad to ensure that they will be in the mix at the end of the season. Liverpool have also signed a number of players to bolster their squad, including former City player Mario Balotelli. Both teams want to do well in the Champions League, so it is important that they have players who can compete with the top teams from Italy, Spain, Germany and other European Countries. Domestic trophies will also be other competitions that both Clubs will wish to win, especially the FA Challenge Cup, which evaded them last May, as Arsenal won this highly coveted prize.
