Manchester City v Liverpool UCL QF 2nd Leg

FINAL SCORE: 1 – 2

Full Time Summary

The story of this game from the Officials perspective starts and ends with a big mistake in chalking off a goal for Manchester City for offside which was wrong in Law at the end of the first half.

The referee as leader of the team will take the major criticism, but he was let down badly by AR1: Pau Cebrián Devís (Technical Area), and the Additional Assistant Referee behind the Manchester City goal-line.  I can relate to the AR raising his flag, but that should have been the beginning of the process and between them the officials who should have communicated and put all the pieces of the jigsaw together and come to the correct decision that the player had been “played onside” by the fact the ball was last touched by a member of the opposition. One thing is for certain though, those thinking that VAR will be there to help sort this out in the World Cup, will have to hope the referee does not blow his whistle before the ball enters the goal. In this situation we have seen today, even though the officials were wrong in Law, is there was VAR at this game and the referee blew his whistle too quickly bore the goal was scored, the wrong decision cannot be turned over. As I keep saying “be careful what you wish for”.

In the interests of completeness, I actually found very little about the rest of Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz’s performance to criticise tonight. OK, he was not in the same league as Felix Brych in the first leg, but he was consistent and did his best to let the game flow, whilst always stepping in at the first signs of reckless play of blatant dissent. But none of that will be any consolation to the Team of Officials when they tuck into their Dinner this evening, trust me, it will be very quiet around the table as they all reflect on what could have been …………

As the game drifts toward the inevitable conclusion the officials will be keen not to be involved in any more controversy with a soft second yellow card for a Liverpool player.

Twitter still bumbling about end of the first half decision.

I am afraid you are out on your own here Mark – I player in an offside position is only penalised if the ball was last touched or played by a team mate, END OF!

We remain here to educate everyone

mark foley@Foleysfootball

“A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball (except from a deliberate save by any opponent) is not considered to have gained an advantage” Milner did not play it deliberately, it hit him, excellent decision by the ref.

81

GB at 2018-04-10 21:24:17

Leroy Sané (MC 19)  was clearly offside that time in the build up to the ball going into the Liverpool goal. Cant blame the officials for that one!

Some will look at the score and suggest that the howler in the first half with the dissallowed goal made no difference, but the difference it would have made with city going in at 2 nil up cannot be underestimated.

76

GB at 2018-04-10 21:18:21

GOAL!  Roberto Firmino (L 9)

72

GB at 2018-04-10 21:15:25

The tempo has been relentless for the first kick of this game and the referee has not been afraid to move off away from his diagonal to get close enough to sell his decisions, which are often not to stop play. 6 yellow cards may seem like a lot but he continues to be consistent with his dishing out of disciplinary sanctions.

66

GB at 2018-04-10 21:11:39

Totally accidental coming together then as the Man City player gets stepped on.

64

GB at 2018-04-10 21:09:23

Good example of what the referee is prepared to let go in this game with some strong challenges going in near the Man City right corner flag, then a tussle between Sterling and Virgil Van Dijk (L 4)  results in a yellow card Yellow Cardfor the Liverpool player. That one just crossed the referee’s threshold for this evening.

60

GB at 2018-04-10 21:03:27

You cannot fault the effort this referee is putting in to cover the ground in this game and he has done his best not to cramp the player’s styles. Such a shame that the officials will only be remembered for one howler.

GAME OVER !!!!

GOAL! Mohamed Salah (L 11)

Man City 1 v 1 Liverpool

Playing Devil’s Advocate here, the audacious clear act of simulation by Sadio Mané (L19)  a nano-second before the ball was played into the goal could have been penalised by the referee with a free kick and yellow card to the Liverpool attacker …… discuss

50

GB at 2018-04-10 20:55:54

I like the way this referee pumps his arms when he is running to make it look like he is moving quicker. There is nothing wrong with his fitness but that is a good coaching tip for referees who are not built like racing snakes.

47

GB at 2018-04-10 20:50:56

The first time the villein of the piece AR1: Pau Cebrián Devís comes into view of the camera in the second half he is yards behind play as Liver mount an attack down their right wing.

GB at 2018-04-10 20:48:57

second half underway

GB at 2018-04-10 20:47:00

A lot of discussion on Twitter about the disallowed goal – this is black and white. It was a mistake, player can only be offside if ball is played by member of their own team.

Half time Summary

GB at 2018-04-10 20:42:10

#MCFC #LFC #cityvlfc

I need to start with confirmation that we have seen a dreadful error by the officials as a Man City player is rules offside when the ball came to him from an opponent. That was such a pity as the officials had done little wrong until that point. That said, there can be no excuse for the way the Manchester City manager came onto the field of play and berated the Referee as he walked off at half time. You will never get away with that in Europe so I am not surprised he wont be on the bench in the second half.

There is more in this one for sure.

Fair play to the referee with his cautions in the first half – no surprises.

Half Time

41

GB at 2018-04-10 20:35:42

AR1: Pau Cebrián Devís makes a major mistake as he signals for Bernardo Silva (MC 20)  to be penalised for bing in an offside position before he scores what should have been Man City’s second goal of the night. The Man City player was in an offside position but should not have been penalised because the ball was last played by a Liverpool player James Milner (L 7). We have to ask what the Assistant Assistant Referee is doing behind the goal again. If the AR could not spot who touched the ball last, surely the AAR should have. Bad error will end up affecting the result.

33

GB at 2018-04-10 20:31:08

Roberto Firmino (L 9)  quite rightly picks up the next yellow card Yellow Card for that blatant trip – unsporting behaviour and the referee spot on again.

32

GB at 2018-04-10 20:29:29

Raheem Sterling (MC 7)  makes the most of a couple of soft contacts in the penalty area and quite rightly gets a word from the referee that he is not going to get duped tonight.

29

GB at 2018-04-10 20:25:12

#MCFC #LFC #cityvlfc

That was the first sequence of events where I totally disagree with the referee as Bernardo Silva (MC 20) is penalised for hand ball then gets a yellow card Yellow Cardfor his protests. I have got no issue with the card for Dissent, but seconds before the ball “hitting” the Man City player’s arm, it had hit James Milner (L 7) on the arm as well. Neither of these ball to hand incidents were deliberate so the Man City player should not have been penalised either.

28

GB at 2018-04-10 20:17:27

Nailed on yellow card Yellow Card for

Trent Alexander-Arnold (L 66)  for unsporting behaviour – consistency again from the referee. He is going to be strong tonight.

25

GB at 2018-04-10 20:14:20

There is only one team looking likely to score at the moment as this game already looks like it might go right down to the wire. The last thing we want tonight is the game to be decided on a controversial decision so the officials will need to keep their concentration.

20

GB at 2018-04-10 20:10:24

#MCFC #LFC #cityvlfc

20 minutes gone and Referee Antonio Lahoz will be happy with the contribution he has made so far. He has had some big calls to make and has refereed his way and shown confidence and consistency so far.

15

GB at 2018-04-10 20:07:25

A careless challenge this time by Liverpool gives Man City another free kick in a dangerous position which comes to nothing.

13

GB at 2018-04-10 20:04:53

#MCFC #LFC #cityvlfc

The first real test of the referee’s authority as Sadio Mané (L19) goes sliding in recklessly and was always going to receive a yellow card Yellow Card unless the referee was going to risk this game getting away from him in the early stages.

And as for Ederson Moraes (MC 31)  if he had not got a yellow card Yellow Cardfor running all the way out to have a go at the Liverpool player, then we may have well all packed up and gone home!

10

GB at 2018-04-10 19:59:38

Once again Referee Antonio Lahoz makes his intentions clear as another physical challenge involving Kevin De Bruyne (MC 17) goes unpunished. He really is going to give the players the chance to compete in this one if he keeps this level of tolerance up.

GB at 2018-04-10 19:55:05

GAME ON!!!!

Gabriel Jesus (MC 33) gets a tap in GOAL! which really sets the tie alight in under 2 minutes.

Virgil Van Dijk (L 4)  was looking for a foul following a coming together with Raheem Sterling (MC 7)  but he made the rookie mistake of not playing to the whistle. I think that was very strong refereeing in not going for a soft free kick out on the touchline in the build up.

20 seconds

GB at 2018-04-10 19:50:58

Kevin De Bruyne (MC 17) is on the receiving end of an old fashioned “welcome to the game challenge” out on the touchline. Interesting that the AR thought long and hard to flag for that. That is the difference in Europe where as in an EPL game the flag would have gone up straight away to assist the referee

Real Madrid v Juventus

GB at 2018-04-10 19:30:09

On the subject of massive appointments, very many congratulations go out from everyone here at YATR to Michael Oliver who has been trusted with managing Real Madrid v Juventus in tomorrow’s Quarter Final. This is a tremendous appointment for a Referee who has only been in the Elite Group for just over 3 months and comes at an ideal time as Oliver is in a rich vein of form in the EPL.

Could there be an even bigger appointment to come this season, as England’s top referee at the moment managed to dodge the recent FA Cup Semi Final appointments at home.

Officials

GB at 2018-04-10 19:26:35

Today’s officials are all from Spain:

Referee:  Antonio Mateu Lahoz

AR1: Pau Cebrián Devís (Technical Area)

AR2: Roberto del Palomar

Additional assistant referees:

Carlos Del Cerro

Alejandro Hernandez

4th Official: Teodoro Sobrino

This 41 year old referee was born in Valencia and was promoted to the FIFA List in 2011.

Lahoz is a very experienced referee at international level who has been selected for this summer’s World Cup Finals in Russia.

One thing is for certain tonight, this referee definitely has his work cut out to match the exceptional performance we saw from Felix Brych in the first leg. I am sure this was the game every UEFA Cat 1 referee wanted, so Antonio will be under added pressure to deliver a performance worthy of the confidence the UEFA Referees Committee have already shown in appointing him to this fixture.

Pre-Match

GB at 2018-04-10 19:18:23

#MCFC #LFC #cityvlfc

It may only be half time when this one kicks off very soon, but City have a mountain to climb if they are going to have any chance of getting back into this one. Not only that, but they now need to deal with the mental stress of coping with the capitulation on Saturday which saw them leak 3 goals again and allow their arch rivals to kick them whilst they were down.

We can expect the Home team to throw everything they have at Liverpool right from the off – but will the Reds “park the bus” I wonder? Liverpool only need to score 1 goal to make the Sky Blues require at least 5 conversions to make it into the semi-finals, so there is definitely a school of thought that Jürgen Klopp will be telling his players to attack, attack, attack, to make this tie safe as soon as possible!

What we do know is that anything other than a 3 nil home will mean there will be no chance of penalties after extra time to settle this one.
