MANCHESTER CITY v LIVERPOOL

MANCHESTER CITY v LIVERPOOL

Commentary By: Stuart Martin

FINAL SCORE: 1 - 1

A tough game for Michael Oliver to control, particularly after the preceding weeks schedule that I referred to prior to the start of the game. Physically he dealt with the frenetic pace of the game quite well, never being too far away from incidents when having to make a judgement. His first half performance, while maintaining control, could have been enhanced had he issued a yellow card for Can for pulling back his opponent in the 12th minute, and the two incidents which could have resulted in penalty kicks to Manchester City which he did not detect. His performance during the second period was much better with offences being detected and penalised, and only one further caution being necessary. There was never any threat to control and his reading of the game coupled with a high workrate to maintain as close a proximity as possible despite the unrelenting pace of the game ensured that overall his performance was one where he overcame any signs of either physical or mental fatigue. Hopefully the powers that be will allow him some decent recovery time before appointing him to another high profile game.

Second half under way.

S.M at 2017-03-19 18:30:16

The first 45 minutes have been played at a frenetic pace with both teams having good chances to score. The Referee's fitness has been tested and he has managed to achieve positions which have given him good views of challenges. He has had the  courage to apply advantage on a number of occasions to ensure the game has been allowed to flow as much as possible, but the three cautions have ensured that control has been retained.  Despite his hectic schedule this week his fitness looks pretty good but then fatigue can affect decision making as well as physical movement. Hopefully the Referee can get through the next 45 minutes without too many problems. There were two incidents which, had the Referee detected them, would have  resulted in penalty kicks to Manchester City. The man-handling of Aguero and the challenge by Milner on Sterling are the two in question. Was these due to  fatigue in decision making or just plain errors by the Referee. The holding of Aguero should have been seen but the slight contact by Milner's boot on Sterling's boot was much more difficult to spot and in my opinion excusable. Great if you can detect slight contact but then the viewing angle can make a difference.

Welcome to this afternoons Ref Cam which features Manchester City v Liverpool from the Etihad Stadium. These teams are rivals for a top four finish with Manchester City being currently in third place and Liverpool in fourth.

The Officials for the game are Michael Oliver (Referee) who will be assisted by S.Burt and S.Child with Craig Pawson acting as 4th Official.

It will be interesting to see how Michael Oliver's fitness stands up to this test, given that this will be his 4th game in seven days. This includes the Chelsea v Manchester United cup tie, a long trip to Turkey for the Besiktas v Olypmiakos European game not to mention a 4th Official appointment as well. It seems crazy appointing by the powers that be as fatigue could well play a part in his performance today. Let's hope not... but we will see.

Stay with us for this intriguing match.
