It’s another European disappointment for Manchester City as Juventus leave The Etihad Stadium with all three points.
As for our referees today…
In an entertaining and enthralling game Damir Skomina led his team superbly well.
The opening week of the Champions League is a really important one for all referees as it sets the standard and should reflect the requirements of the UEFA referees’ Committee.
Skomina should be proud of his performance tonight as he saw the game through to a successful conclusion without the need to brandish any cards, and we look forward to seeing more of him as the competition progresses.
I feel he was correct to allow City’s goal, although others may disagree? Let us know what you think by contacting us either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at email@example.com
His assistants were absolutely outstanding, showing all colleagues throughout the world of football how to run a line at the top level.
Jure Praprotnik did everything asked of him with a calmness rarely seen.
However, the star performer for me was his colleague Robert Vukan.
Big games call for big performances and Mr Vukan can return to his native Slovenia with his head held very high. He faced a massive decision early in the first half when Paul Pogba had the ball in the City net. However, Vukan correctly disallowed the effort for offside as Pogba’s team mate was in an ooffside position and made a move towards the ba
Excellent lining of the very highest order.

Excellent spot again by Skomina as Bony needlessly pushes over his opponent
at 2015-09-15 21:32:51
That’s the end of the regular 90 minutes…3 added minutes to go on
at 2015-09-15 21:27:15
Goal scorer Morata makes way for Barzagli as Juve look to use up the final 5 minutes of regular time
at 2015-09-15 21:25:21
Pellegrini has his final throw of the dice as he risks the injured Aguero who replaces Samir Nasri.
Can the City goal scorer do it again for City?
at 2015-09-15 21:23:47
as we thought, this one had more to offer as Morata scores a super goal for Juve
at 2015-09-15 21:22:12
We enter the final 10 minutes of play and this one is still finally balanced…
at 2015-09-15 21:20:12
The goalscorer Mandzukic has to leave the action with cramp, replaced by Paulo Dyabla
at 2015-09-15 21:18:16
More good team work between referee and assistant as they signal in unison for a foul to City
at 2015-09-15 21:16:47
Second change for City as the captain Kompany leaves the action for Otamendi to take over
at 2015-09-15 21:15:07
This will be an excellent final 20 minutes as Juve look to protect that precious away goal whilst City will be going in search of a home win…
at 2015-09-15 21:13:55
And City respond with a substitution as Raheem Sterling makes way for Kevin de Bruyne

Just 25 minutes to go and this is a really good game now after that opening goal.
Play has opened up and the flair players are having a real impact.
Our referees have moved up with it and their games reflect the demands placed upon them.
at 2015-09-15 21:02:20
The Juve number 3 is furious that the challenge on him by Vincent Kompany was unfair but for me Chiellini has to be stronger there.
Kompany got above the Italian defender but his arms were not holding him down, and nowhere in the Laws of Association Football does it say the defender has to given the chance to jump first or highest!
at 2015-09-15 20:59:37
own goal by Chiellini
at 2015-09-15 20:58:04
A late challenge by Toure is spotted by our referee, who looked for an advantage for Juve but nothing came so he correctly brought play back for the free kick.
Excellent refereeing again.
at 2015-09-15 20:54:20
Good advantage played by our referee as his assistant correctly indicates offside but Skomina is happy to allow open play to continue
at 2015-09-15 20:53:23
And Praprotnik gives another excellent decision with the tightest of offside calls against Juve.
This is a masterclass in howrto run lines from two outstanding assistant referees
at 2015-09-15 20:51:56
Good team work as assistant Praprotnik gives a foul against Juve on the blind-side of his referee.
at 2015-09-15 20:50:35
Contrast our referee’s approach to this second half to the first…
He is awarding fewer fouls as the players have tuned into his tolerance level, meaning the game is less interrupted.
His early work is paying dividends.
at 2015-09-15 20:48:59
There is a sight to warm the hearts of all City followers as Sergio Aguero warms up as a substitute!
at 2015-09-15 20:47:11
It’s time for the second half, and Juve get us going again…
at 2015-09-15 20:38:28
A really good first half from our officials who have not put a foot wrong.
Assistant Referee Vulkan is the star of the show with a lesson for many to learn from with a sublime offside decision when Pogba put the ball into the City net.
at 2015-09-15 20:31:37
That’s the end of the first 45 minutes of normal time, and our referee is adding nothing to that.
at 2015-09-15 20:30:36
Skomina has this one well under control.
No problems regarding control and recognition with this referee.
at 2015-09-15 20:27:09
Five minutes of this first half to go as the game livens up again with Fernandinho smashing a shot just wide
at 2015-09-15 20:26:04
Sterling tries wriggling through the Juve midfield but it challenged fairly and loses the ball. Our referee is well positioned to judge it again and waves away the City man’s protests for a free kick
at 2015-09-15 20:22:04
More good refereeing as Skomina spots a push by Silva in the Juve penalty area
at 2015-09-15 20:20:01
Half an hour played and the visitors will be happier with this than City.
Our referees have done really well so far, especially the assistant on the far side, Vulkan who called the Pogba offside ‘goal’ superbly well
at 2015-09-15 20:17:59
The game has certainly settled down after all of those early free kicks, but some of the urgency and excitement has gone with it
at 2015-09-15 20:09:58
Hernanes (Juve) must be getting close to a caution as another niggly foul goes in.
at 2015-09-15 20:05:28
This time it’s assistant referee Praprotnik who makes a good call as he correctly sees Chiellini play the ball out for a throw in to City
at 2015-09-15 20:01:58
Fabulous tackle by Toure and it was only due to our referees excellent positioning that he correctly saw it as a lawful challenge.
Excellent start by the officials.
at 2015-09-15 20:00:03
Big, BIG decision as assistant Vulkan calls a superb offside decision.
Paul Pogba put the ball in the City net but his team mate had made a move towards the ball too from an offside position.
Great work Mr Vulkan…any chance you could stay in England for a few days and teach our Select Group how that works?!?
at 2015-09-15 19:56:00
With only nine minutes played we have already had SIX minor fouls awarded by our referee.
Whilst I appreciate he is setting out his tolerance level, I do hope he gives the game an opportunity to breathe
at 2015-09-15 19:53:24
A typically ‘european’ free kick there – which Premier League followers may not have been expecting, as Skomina awards an indirect free kick against City for a high-footed challenge
at 2015-09-15 19:51:05
Good work from the assistant Vukan who correctly spots an offside against Juve
at 2015-09-15 19:49:35
Citty carve open the Juve defence and both Sterling and Silva go close to scoring.
Play then breaks down as Skomina correctly awards a free kick to Juve
at 2015-09-15 19:48:03
First foul as Toure is held down when attempting to head the ball.
Free kick to City
at 2015-09-15 19:46:45
City take the kick-off and get us underway…
at 2015-09-15 19:41:56
It’s almost time for kick-off at The Etihad Stadium…
at 2015-09-15 19:24:27
As for our referees today…
Top Slovenian referee Damir Skomina has the honour of leading his team in this mouth-watering fixture.
Running the lines for Damir will be fellow countrymen Jure Praprotnik and Robert Vukan, whilst the Slovenian theme continues behind the goals and in the technical area which see with Matej Jug and Slavko Vin?i? and Manuel Vidali as fourth official.
40 year-old Skomina is highly regarded within Europe and is one of UEFAs 29 Elite Category Referees, a list which includes England’s best referee Mark Clattenburg, so he is unlikely to be phased at tonight’s game.
Indeed, having already officiated at EURO 2008 and 2012 , the 2008 Summer Olympics, a Champions League quarter final (2012) and the Super Cup clash in the same year between Chelsea and Atlético Madrid this referee has all of the credentials required to bring tonight’s encounter to a successful conclusion.
Since experiencing life as the fourth official at the 2013 Champions League final, Damir will have similar aspirations to the players, hoping he can go all the way in the middle this time around.
Everyone at YATR wishes the refereeing team every success as we look forward to a great game…

Hi everyone, and welcome to today’s live Refcam commentary.
And what a game we have for you…
This is the Champions League opening Group D clash between Manchester City and Juventus, being played at The Etihad Stadium, Manchester.
High-flying City have made a fantastic start to their Premier League season winning all five games without conceding a single goal along the way, and they will be desperate to take that form into their European campaign.
They certainly have the squad of players to go all the way in this competition but will have to begin their quest to lift the trophy without their goal machine, Sergio Aguero, who is side lined with a knee injury.
However, Raheem Sterling and David Silva are both back in contention for a starting place after missing out at the weekend.
In contrast, their opponents the Italian champions Juventus have taken only one point from their opening three domestic games, and will be looking to kick start their season with a good result away at City.
With players such as Buffon, Chiellini, Dyabla and the much sought-after Paul Pogba, who would bet against ‘The Old Lady’ taking away a morale-boosting result tonight?
With so much world class talent on show tonight this is sure to be a fantastic game, so don’t move away from our Refcam coverage, and do let us know how you think this one will end or offer your comments on the refereeing by contacting us either on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
