Match Analysis.

There was always danger of RED cards in the second half and the second caution of Zabaleta was, in my opinion, quite correct. It was a reckless challenge on Costa and unfortunately there was some afters which led to Costa also receiving a yellow card. In addition to these, we had 3 more yellow cards to both teams. From a consistency point of view we might have had at least two more Chelsea yellows following the tackles by Schurrle and Fabregas. Whilst these are the kind of statistics you don’t want to read, City will argue that they should have had two penalties – one on Dzeko, which I believe should have been given and the second on Toure, which looks like legs coming together and Dean was well placed to deny the City appeals. Given his proximity I can go with him on this one. His two Assistants both contributed well and he will be pleased with their support. Not an easy day at the office for our team of officials. Mike Dean is still one of the best but I just pose the question as to how many yellow cards were really necessary. Did he set his threshold too high or caution too early. Plenty to discuss and learn from and I am sure this will be examined on the Ref Show next week. I posed the question in my report as to whether or not Frank Lampard a Chelsea legend could win City a point. He certainly did that and will become just as important for City as the season unfolds. A great game, not for the feint hearted but lots to discuss and two really good goals to send both sets of fans home with a point each.

Keep in touch with You Are The Ref, we appreciate your involvement.

All the best,

Roger Dilkes

From the first attack, a corner to City, nothing materialises. Where have we heard that before?

RD at 2014-09-21 17:04:48

Mike Dean gets us underway.

RD at 2014-09-21 17:01:20

Half Time summary:

Six cautions. Manchester City 4 Chelsea 2. This means that certain players will have to be very careful in the second half or we could well finish the game with teams of less than 11 aside. The managers need to look at this and use their substitutes well if the game becomes too physical. Mike Dean will need to be consistent as he has set his threshold, so players will know where they stand with him. The Assistants have shown good concentration and I have been impressed with Burt and his movement, both sprinting and crabbing. Mike Dean will be impressing upon them to stay focused and watch his back when challenges have taken place and he has followed play. There have been one or two that have gone on ‘off the ball’, but not caused any real problems for the officials. The half time analysis has shown the Costa challenge which I referred to earlier and it shows the referee looking right down the barrel and not having an angle to give anything other than the corner. A more acute angle would have given him a much better view and this would have led to a penalty being awarded. You can never switch off I these games, especially in or around the penalty area. Lots to play for, let’s get ready for another intriguing 45 minutes.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:49:51

Mike Dean brings the first half to a conclusion

RD at 2014-09-21 16:48:37

Trainers on to look at Willian after the challenge. Up on his feet and walking off steadily.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:47:26

A corner now to City from which Silva fouls Willian. Must have been worried with his challenge and with the Referee in close vicinity.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:45:37

Corner to Chelsea  as 3 minutes extra time is added.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:43:52

RD at 2014-09-21 16:32:39

Another corner signalled by A/R Brooks but again nothing materialises from the kick. Good to see so far players concentrating on their defending and attacking – no grappling to talk about.

Zabaleta cautioned quite rightly did not want Hazard to get past him.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:27:43

Look at Mike Dean’s body language and smile. Says it all.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:27:07

How many corners is it going to take – this is number 6.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:26:35

A/R Burt stretches his legs to chase a long through ball. Good to see.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:25:13

Foul by Matic on Silva when Chelsea lose the ball. Referee in quickly again. Good control so far and not too fussy.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:23:42

Chelsea are retaining the ball and playing themselves into the game. Different problems for our guys to consider.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:21:47

Just what I had been mentioning, A/R Burt full of concentration for throw in. But then a foul on Ivanovic – watch out boys for the retaliation.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:19:39

Kolarov correctly penalised for foul on Ramires. Strong challenge, this is not for the feint hearted.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:17:58

It is important that Stuart Burt keeps focused as play has been at the Chelsea end for most of the game.

Another foul to Chelsea on Willian.

Costa fouls Kompany, this is going to be a battle. Dean in quickly. Well done.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:15:56

Toure gives Willian a liitle dig, Dean on the job again

RD at 2014-09-21 16:15:19

Again City have a corner, such is their domination for no result. Chelsea defend well.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:14:18

Another corner to City, but well defended

RD at 2014-09-21 16:13:07

Now he stops up – good refereeing. Sometimes it pays dividends not to let players take things into their own hands. Safe refereeing is always the best policy.

Fernandinho cautionedYellow Card

RD at 2014-09-21 16:11:04

Dean is letting the game breathe but needs to keep focused

RD at 2014-09-21 16:09:24

RD at 2014-09-21 16:02:12

First foul to City. Silva knocks it in and Chelsea defend.

RD at 2014-09-21 16:00:10

Mike Dean gets us underway on a super afternoon for football. Sunshine not rain.

RD at 2014-09-21 15:55:51

To-day’s match officials are the vastly experienced and former FIFA Referee, Mike Dean, supported by Assistant Referees John Brooks and Stuart Burt. Phil Dowd is 4th official for the second time this weekend and he could well be busy as it is no secret that the two managers do not have much time for each other. It is pleasing to note that the PGMOL have appointed one of the top referees in this country to cover this game, although last season Mike Dean was sarcastically praised by ‘the special one’ for his performance on the day. Praise, that ultimately landed him in trouble with the Football Association.

Although the outcome of this match, will not determine who wins the Premiership next May, it will give a good indication to both sets of fans as to how their respective teams compare at week 5 of this campaign.

We all look forward to an entertaining game and wish our colleagues all the best for their afternoon.

RD at 2014-09-21 15:44:26

This afternoon our coverage concerns the match of the weekend, as we visit the Etihad Stadium where Manchester City entertain Chelsea. This stadium is undergoing development and it is hoped that by August 2015, the capacity will increase to around 55,000. Nonetheless, a full house of some 46,500 is expected.

The away team have won all their games this season in the Premier League and will want to return to London with an unblemished record making it 5 out of 5. City, on the other hand, will want to take all three points and reduce the gap between them to just two points.

Both teams were in Europe this week and City will be disappointed that they did not pick up any points for their display at Bayern Munich after a very spirited performance by Manual Pellegrini’s side against the Champions from last season. Chelsea were held at home by a much improved Schalke team, who surprised Jose Mourinho’s team with a fighting display at Stamford Bridge, where the score was 1-1.

The talking point in all of the games in the Champions League this week was the kit that has been issued to the officials. I much prefer all black and didn’t think much of the ‘beachwear’ as one of my colleagues commented in his blog. So, who will shine today? So many world super stars on show, it is difficult to say, but, the fans are in for a real treat, whichever shade of blue they support. Will the ‘Pensioners’ return to the capital unbeaten or will it be a ‘blue moon’ over Manchester.

Stay with us and enjoy the action.
