After a very dower first half with not to much to talk about with the match officials other than Eddie Smart having a lot of offside decisions to call. The second half was a different story. As I said in the first half when there is nothing going on the referee and his assistants must stay fully focused and 100% concentration. If you switch off you will make errors, that was evident in the second half. Early in the second half there was a foul by AV7 on MC16, a deliberate full back in the penalty area which was a clear penalty and was not given. After reviewing the incident Mike Dean was guilty of ball watching and lacked awareness of what was going on around him which I have to say is unlike Mike. Then just before Man City’s second goal there was a reckless challenge by an AV defender on MC21 where he took man and ball, AV defender fortunate to get away with that. Looking at the assistants Eddie Smart can be happy with his afternoon’s work, his offside’s were very good and his eye to eye contact was very good with Mike but the same cannot be said about Simon Long. You can say that on AV’s first goal you can argue that AV20 was offside when the free kick came over and with the score at 2-2 in the 88th minute, a break away by Aston Villa after a through ball to AV20 who is onside puts him through on goal and assistant Simon Long flags incorrectly for offside. MC can count themselves fortunate as their goalkeeper comes out and brings AV20 down which would of been a penalty to AV20 and a red card to MC goalkeeper for denial.

Mike’s fitness and positioning was sound, he had 3 cautions throughout the game that were all justified but I think the post match discussion will be on the key match incidents in this game.

Substitution for AV, AV7 OFF, AV34 ON.

Correct decision, foul by MC6 holding offence.

MH at 2015-04-25 19:06:30

MC15 after a foul on AV16 lucky not to receive a yellow card after a deliberate trip and stopping a promising attack.

MH at 2015-04-25 19:00:55

Coming together by MC7 and AV5, Mike correct to give nothing.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:57:32

Tempo of the game has gone up and Mike Dean has to go with it. Just before Man City’s second goal, MC21 had a good shout for a penalty as AV defender made a reckless challenge.

Substitution for MC, MC7 ON, MC18 OFF.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:42:20

As I was saying when nothing is happening you have to stay fully focused and have 100% concentration. AV7 clearly pulled back MC16 in the penalty area, was a clear penalty to MC16 and nothing given. Has the referee switched off ?

MH at 2015-04-25 18:40:00

Don’y worry I’m still here nothings happening.

MC to kick off the second half.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:21:53

First half comes to an end, very quiet for referee Mike Dean as I said before that’s how you like it as a referee no controversy. He is moving around well, getting good viewing angles, good support from his two assistants and Eddie Smart being the busier of the two. Let’s hope for a more exciting second half.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:17:40

MH at 2015-04-25 18:16:44

Don’t think I have ever seen so many offside’s against a team in  45 minutes.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:15:04

Correct decision by referee after collision by MC42 and AV16.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:12:39

Assistant Smart being kept busy by AV20 keep straying offside.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:09:45

Good management by Mike after a foul by MC11on AV5.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:07:22

Free kick to AV after a foul by MC26.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:04:37

Another correct decision by Eddie.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:02:46

However you must not let your concentration slip, it only takes one incident to change the game.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:01:43

30 minutes gone very very quiet for referee Mike Dean just how you would want it.

MH at 2015-04-25 18:00:40

Also good decision by Smart on non offside on AV20 chance.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:59:47

Good free kick by assistant Smart.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:58:27

Great save by MC goalkeeper after a shot by AV20.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:54:28

Villa nearly self destructing again with a poor backpass by AV7.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:52:00

Mike correct not awarding MC goalkeeper a free kick after a challenge by AV20 as the ball was not in MC goalkeepers hands.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:50:19

18 mins gone and only 4 fouls so far important that Mike keeps his concentration as there is not a lot happening.

As i said that he has gone out wide to give himself an excellent viewing angle.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:42:16

A very quiet opening 10 minutes for Mike Dean, moving around well but sticking rigidly to a central positioning roll.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:38:37

Very sluggish start by AV.

MH at 2015-04-25 17:36:53

MH at 2015-04-25 17:21:23

Good evening, for tonight’s game the Referee is Mike Dean. Manchester City trying to cement their Champions League place and Aston Villa need the points to climb away from the relegation zone. Villa have been rejuvenated under Tim Sherwood taking his side to Wembley after defeating Liverpool in their semi final and also winning their last away game at Spurs. This will not be an easy game for Mike Dean who is a no nonsense referee showing a total of 113 yellow cards at an average of 4.52 per game and 5 red cards in his previous 25 Premier League games but is a highly respected referee. He will be assisted by Simon Long, Eddie Smart and 4th official Craig Pawson who we should add our congratulations to being appointed as 4th official to this season’s FA Cup Final.

Not long now before kick off.
