Full Time Summary

RCT at 2017-02-21 23:01:45

The Referee Antonio Miguel Mateu has throughout this fast end to end attacking game has shown a strong presence his movement, acceleration of pace, consistent application of law and management of players have been overall first class. He was challenged on a number of occasions by players but he remained firm and steadfast in his event management. These have been attributes that we have seen and discussed throughout in my blog. There have been a total of 9 yellow cards shown - 3 to MC and 6 to Monaco such was the high tempo through out. There was a big moment in the 33rd minute yellow card to Aguero this was for simulation. If you review the referees position and movement he was in a good position to make this judgement. On replay (which the referee does not have) the decision looks harsh to show a yellow card but in a tight judgement my feeling is that the referee has got the decision correct with the non award of a penalty kick. As Aguero is running at pace and does appear to look and tumble over the outstretched legs of the Monaco GK. How difficult these decisions are in real time!  very easy to judge on endless replays!

There was also a key moment in the 2nd half (47th minute) when the Additional Assistant Referee behind the goal line has judged a foul by Otamendi on Falcao. This decision took a while to award but you cannot fault the judgement here as there is a clear foul on Falcao and the AAR would have had the best view looking into the incident - good teamwork seen here.

All offside judgements have been correct including the very good non flag for the MC 82nd minute goal as Sterling is offside but clearly not active - a very good judgement and one no one praises the Match Official for getting right!

Overall in final summary - so much to discuss but for me.

  • The Referee has put in a strong performance
  • Management of players and game / event
  • Accuracy of decision making
  • Consistent in yellow cards (9)
  • Fitness very good as we discussed
  • Positioning - for viewing / angle / proximity in particular key match decisions
  • Match Control

Match Referee Performance to half time

RCT at 2017-02-21 21:44:22

To half time we have discussed in my blog the strong presence of the referee - his movement, acceleration of pace, consistent application of law and management of players. These have been attributes that we have seen and noted by evidence during the first half.

There have been 5 yellow cards shown to date and it is my feeling that unless the players heed the referees strong reaction then one or both teams will finish with less that 11 players.

As Aguero is running as pace and does appear to look and tumble over the outstretched legs of the Monaco GK.

How difficult these decisions are in real time!

Sidbe 19 of Monaco careless and the referee shows good empathy for the game by a good blast of the whistle and a calming word with the player.

16

RCT at 2017-02-21 21:05:21

Great run and explosive turn of pace by Antonio in that last Monaco attack followed up by a correct offside judgement against Monaco.

13

RCT at 2017-02-21 21:02:41

Good advantage from the referee to Monaco - followed up by him getting into a great viewing position across towards the AR nearside (PCD) in case a judgement needed with the Monaco GK coming out to challenge for the ball with a MC player in close attendance.

11

RCT at 2017-02-21 21:00:30

Man City gk interesting tactic there 2 defenders standing on the edge of the penalty area both standing in line just outside of the penalty area. As City take a short gk.

Sterling Offside again correct

8

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:56:42

Kamil Gilk 25 from Monaco Yellow Cardquite correct as the referee sets out his standard for tonight

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:54:36

A good non offside flag form PCD NEARSIDE AR

5

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:53:21

A good non offside flag from our far side AR (JAR) as the Monaco player was in an offside position but not actively involved in play.

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:51:48

Javier Aguilar Rodriguez (JAR) is on the far touchline

2

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:50:43

1st offside against Sterling is correct from Pau Cebrian Devis (PCD) ON THE NEARSIDE TOUCHLINE

1

Good early use of the whistle by our referee clear and positive in the 1st free kick award.

The Referee blows his whistle to signal ko

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:47:41

The Referee tosses the coin

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:46:26

The Referee takes control pre ko by tossing the coin and deciding which Captain has which side of the coin.

Good practice..

3 Teams enter the field of play

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:43:45

A marvellous atmosphere tonight at The Etihad....

SWOT analysis

RCT at 2017-02-21 20:40:41

When analysing your referee and assistant referee performance it is key to reflect and carry out a SWOT analysis of your performance. Be honest with yourself and firstly look at the strengths in your performance, what went well, why? where when and how. Then consider your weakness these are areas that you need to improve upon. This is absolute key in looking to improve yourself as a referee. opportunities - what are the opportunities for you as a referee / assistant? and what are the threats to your ambition?

Why not use the SWOT analysis on tonight`s Referee and his Assistants?
