So the Refereeing talking points in this game were
- A confident Refereeing performance
- First half key match incident correctly judged
- Cautions well timed to underpin match control
- Good overall involvement level
- Arsenal’s late equaliser will be the main talking point not the Match Officials
I said at half time that the Referee did well with his decision not to award United a first half penalty and not to caution Valencia for simulation, that proved to be the only key match incident in what overall was not the all action game we expected. Arsenal were for the most part disappointing but they drew level in dramatic fashion with Giroud’s late strike, which will prove I’m sure to be the main talking point of this encounter. But for me the most pleasing aspect of this game is to confirm the improvement that Andre Marriner has made this season in his Refereeing. Andre showed much confidence in his overall management of this game in terms of involvement level, cautions, decision making and teamwork. I felt that his choice of cautions was sound and that without doubt was a factor in management and control of this match. Both Assistants did well, its worth noting also that Simon Beck is much more measured in his contribution this season, looking to intervene only when necessary, he is having a better season also! As I said above the Match Officials will not be the talking point from this game.

Summary to follow
RH at 2016-11-19 15:23:08
Herrera goes to ground seeking a penalty which is rightly denied but it is Rooney who picks up a caution for dissent!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:21:28
Xhaka picks up a caution for handball as Assistant Andy Garratt signals the offence which disrupted a United attack!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:19:47
A minimum of 4 additional minutes to be played
RH at 2016-11-19 15:19:18
Rooney lead with an elbow there and could count himself fortunate to escape a caution
RH at 2016-11-19 15:17:38
However fight or no fight Arsenal have salvaged something from this game surely with that goal from Giroud!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:16:35
Apart from the Reckless challenges by Sanchez and Ramsey, we’ve not seen too much fight from Arsenal today, along with the Referees positive contribution, another reason this game has never really taken off!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:14:28
Ramsey late and Reckless on Pogba, no issue with that caution!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:11:42
Pogba impeded during that last United attack but it was seen and acknowledged by the Referee who had words with Monreal at the next stoppage
RH at 2016-11-19 15:08:54
Xhaka replaces the tough tackling holding midfield player Coquelin as the Gunners seek to press forward!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:07:35
Having said that Ramsey was unlucky to concede a free kick for that challenge on Pogba
RH at 2016-11-19 15:05:02
As we enter the final 15 minutes of the game, the Referee is officiating with much confidence, just three cautions and a correctly judged key match decision, just keep this up Andre!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:03:11
A superb penalty area challenge by Coquelin as he cleanly wins the ball from Rashford with the Referee ideally placed!
RH at 2016-11-19 15:01:34
Arsenal make a significant change as Giroud enters, with Ramsey moving to a more central role
RH at 2016-11-19 14:58:59
So we can only wonder what effect that goal will have on the match tempo
RH at 2016-11-19 14:58:38
A caution to Mata for over celebrating!
RH at 2016-11-19 14:56:47
Mata breaks the deadlock!
RH at 2016-11-19 14:55:52
A sign of the match tempo was evident in that earlier touch line challenge between Pogba and Ozil, as the Arsenal man went to ground Pogba resisted the temptation to pile in!
RH at 2016-11-19 14:53:00
Interesting, Blind replaces Darmian, I wonder if the United man’s first half caution had any bearing on the decision to sub him?
RH at 2016-11-19 14:51:31
United ring the changes as Rooney enters, I wonder what tactical effect that will have?
RH at 2016-11-19 14:49:42

RH at 2016-11-19 14:48:06
From a Refereeing point of view the presence of Carrick as captain seems to have a positive effect on United’s discipline
RH at 2016-11-19 14:45:57
Although there has much said for managing challenges and only cautioning for Reckless challenges, it has to be said that the timing of the two first half cautions have reminded the two offenders of their responsibilities in this half as Damian in particular has resisted the temptation to haul down Walcott since the break
RH at 2016-11-19 14:40:46
Another penalty area incident, but Mustafi was committed to block the ball and any contact with his arm did not merit a penalty, worth noting that it was the crowd not the players who made the most fuss about it!
RH at 2016-11-19 14:37:46
Watching Andre for the first time this season, there is definitely more confidence and momentum about his game!
RH at 2016-11-19 14:35:26
Pogba brushes aside Sanchez but nothing more than careless
RH at 2016-11-19 14:33:08
The second half is underway!
RH at 2016-11-19 14:32:14
A fairly even first half in midfield with hosts United probably creating more penalty area incident than Arsenal and it is here that we have the source of the big first half talking point with the Valencia/Monreal penalty incident, I felt at my first viewing that Andre got it right and I’m still of that opinion. Yes there was contact but I feel that it would be setting too low a contact threshold if it was given, I also back the Referee for not showing yellow for simulation as there was sufficient contact between the two players. Two good cautions also, so far Andre Marriner is doing ok, but I expect the match tempo to rise as although the game is competitive, its not really lifted off yet!

There will be a minimum of one minute added time to be played

On the whole player discipline has been good in this first half.

TV replay of the penalty incident confirms that Valencia went to ground following contact with Monreal but did not look an obvious case of simulation.
at 2016-11-19 14:08:44
That non penalty award did not go down very well with Jose Mourinho, no surprise there then!
at 2016-11-19 14:07:44
Valencia goes to ground in the Arsenal penalty area following contact with Monreal. No penalty given which I think is the right decison
at 2016-11-19 14:04:15
Damian receives a final warning from the referee for a late challenge on Jenkinson.
at 2016-11-19 14:03:25
The action is evenly spaced in both halves of the field of play. All three active officials are keeping their eye in.
at 2016-11-19 13:59:32
Although this match is competitive the tempo is not high at present
at 2016-11-19 13:56:43
Second caution of the day Darmian for stopping a promising Arsenal attack by tripping Walcott.
at 2016-11-19 13:54:43
Simon Beck has just been taken out by Ashford and Koscielny but now harm done!
at 2016-11-19 13:51:49
No that really is Andre not Andrea!!
at 2016-11-19 13:50:53
Today’s match referee is Andrea Marriner. His assistants are Simon Beck with the red flag on the near side and Andy Garratt with the yellow flag who is operating on the far side away from the technical areas. The fourth official is Michael Oliver
at 2016-11-19 13:48:30
Reckless challenge from behind by Sanchez on Herrera nailed on yellow card
