Liverpool v Watford

RH at 2018-03-17 20:35:35

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Referee Anthony Taylor takes a one sided game is his stride
  • A sure footed Refereeing performance where involvement level and positioning are judged to perfection

In Refereeing we take whatever the game the throws at us, one many occasions that means rising to the challenges that come our way or learning hard lessons of controlling the game at what ever level we officiate at. This game never really tested Anthony Taylor, that’s not his fault and he wisely adopted a low profile for much of the proceedings, he rightly cautioned Liverpool’s Gomez and was superbly placed to correctly judge that Mariappa’s penalty area handball contact should not result in a penalty kick. Other than that he set a credible tolerance level on careless contact and gave a demonstration in the art of movement and positioning. Assistant Adam Nunn fared better on the offside decision’s where he did really well, some reflection for Dan Cook regarding some first half offside calls, but I believe he will learn from this and improve, he certainly demonstrates great movement and technique in his game. But the abiding memory of this match will be Salah’s four goals and why not?

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:17:00

Adam Nunn who has had an impressive  game rightly flags Danny Ings offside

RH at 2018-03-17 20:15:27

Salah again in on goal and the Referee is not far away just in case a penalty area decision is needed!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:13:05

GOAL!Salah’s fourth of the evening and Liverpool’s fifth!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:12:18

Sound offside judgement by Adam Nunn as he rightly keeps his flag down as Ings strikes on goal!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:10:26

That should have read Assistant! apologies Dan!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:09:48

In fairness to Assailant Dan Cook his technique on that far touchline looks impressive, if he learns from his first half experience he could become a useful Match Assistant Referee at this level!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:06:17

Firmino grounds Hughes right in front of the ideally placed Referee, great final third positioning again from Anthony Taylor!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:04:46

GOAL!Salah completes a hat trick with his 35th goal of the season!

RH at 2018-03-17 20:02:43

Prodl and Mariappa converge on Mane for a Liverpool free kick!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:59:38

In terms of involvement level the Referee is executing his game plan in much the way that he did in the first half, and why not? other than the caution and his judgement of that earlier penalty area handball incident he has not been extended particularly so far!

In a counter attacking match such as this, in order to take off quickly to track play the Referee does need to anticipate the direction of the game at times, obviously the more accomplished the Referee the more impressive the result, I have to say that Anthony Taylor has demonstrated this aspect of Refereeing superbly this evening so far!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:48:06

Credit to the Referee who was perfectly placed for that Mariappa penalty incident!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:47:01

The ball is layed into the Watford penalty area and there are shouts for a penalty for a handball offence by Mariappa, but the ball hit the defender on the thigh and then his arm, not a penalty for me!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:44:47

Always important at low tempo phases of the game such as this for the Match Officials to maintain focus and stay alert!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:40:35

It looked like Prodl had grounded Mane but not in the opinion of the Referee

RH at 2018-03-17 19:39:29

Yellow CardGomez halts the attacking progress of Richarlison as the Brazilian was about to enter the penalty area!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:38:21

Adam Nunn spot on with his offside flag against Salah!

Anthony Taylor gets the second half underway

RH at 2018-03-17 19:21:17

A low profile first half for Anthony Taylor who has judged his involvement level well to let the players do the talking in a game where the home side look very much in control. Good to see however that he varies his pace to track the Reds lively attacking three up front to get those all important penalty area view angles especially on the counter attack.  Assistant Dan Cook will no doubt be pleased that he’ll be running the Watford forwards in the second half, the TV footage from a couple of his first half decisions has questioned his judgement.

Anthony Taylor coping well with the counter attack as Firmino strikes on goal!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:08:40

Mane is flagged offside when he finally plays the ball, but a TV replay suggests that he actually wasn’t offside in the first place? Dan Cook needs to get his eye in!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:06:25

A low key first half hour for Referee Anthony Taylor where an early Liverpool goal and a low tempo encounter have not challenged him so far!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:04:35

Its close call this time for Dan Cook and a reply suggests that he was hasty with his flag!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:03:27

But the free kick amounts to nothing as Adam Nunn has the choice of four Watford players to flag offside as the Reds adopt a high defending line!

RH at 2018-03-17 19:02:14

Henderson makes a poor pass to Wijnaldum who grounds Capoue for a useful Watford free near the Liverpool penalty area

RH at 2018-03-17 18:59:50

Pleasing to see that Anthony Taylor reacts quickly and sprints well into position as Salah attacks the Watford penalty area.

RH at 2018-03-17 18:57:32

An unscripted change for the Reds as Can gets injured and is replaced by Milner

RH at 2018-03-17 18:54:01

Dan Cook halts van Dijk’s attacking progress with a ball out of play flag resulting in a Watford throw in

RH at 2018-03-17 18:49:54

Mariappa shoves Mane to the ground for a dangerous Liverpool free kick

RH at 2018-03-17 18:47:13

An easier call for Assistant Dan Cook as Firmino is clearly offside!

RH at 2018-03-17 18:45:52

A good advantage played as Robertson was late on Femenia just inside the Watford half

RH at 2018-03-17 18:44:23

With Liverpool sending up Matip and van Dijk for corners, there could be some pushing and shoving for the Referee to manage

RH at 2018-03-17 18:41:40

Anthony Taylor just getting caught up in the final third left hand channel as Liverpool attacked

RH at 2018-03-17 18:39:39

Just looking at that last Salah run on goal, it was the tightest of offside calls, but I wouldn’t criticise an Assistant for getting that one wrong

RH at 2018-03-17 18:34:50

GOAL!A great start for Liverpool as Salah opens the scoring!

RH at 2018-03-17 18:33:37

Adam Nunn rightly flagging Richarlison offside as he came back to play the ball

RH at 2018-03-17 18:31:31

If you are watching the game on TV, Dan Cook is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Adam Nunn is running the nearside touch line.

The following is an extract from the ‘Premier League Referees in Week#’ feature that appears on the You are The Ref website ahead of each Premier League Weeks action!

Assistants: A Nunn
& D Cook
Fourth official: Roger East

It’s a late kick-off but not the latest, as BT hope for a repeat of the fare served up on the opening weekend, resulting in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

While John Barnes David James, Jerome Sinclair and Bill Findlay may have pulled on the shirt of both clubs, Brendan Rodgers stepped up from a coaching role to take on the mantle of manager from 2008 to 2009 at Watford and steered Liverpool from 2012 to 2015 having done less well at Reading, only to gain promotion with Swansea.

The first time these clubs met on Merseyside it ended 3-1 in the FA Cup back in February, 1967, while the last encounter at Anfield was in November, 2016. The score? Six-one, with goals supplied by Sadio Mane (two), Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Georginio Wijnaldum while Daryl Janmaat came up with the Hornets’ consolation. Referee Michael Oliver cautioned Wijnaldum, Leo Britos and Jose Holebas.

Anthony Taylor refereed Watford’s February win against Everton as well as their September tonking at the hands of Manchester City, both at Vicarage Road plus that reverse fixture when Jurgen Klopp’s side left with a point in August. He also refereed Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Leicester in September.

An important match for both sides to regain momentum this Saturday evening having experienced disappointing League results last weekend. Its seems that every Premier League game has so much riding on it these days and this match is no different! The hosts really do want the points to secure a top four finish and the visitors need to gain points to finally secure top tier football next season. so there’s plenty to play for!
