For me Anthony has shown very good overall match control of a very high profile live TV game! how had he achieved this?

Well at half time we discussed how Anthony had kept a low profile one yellow card and that he had set a very good standard of consistency and received respect from the players.

A totally different game in the 2nd half as Spurs came out of the blocks sensing their Premier League title dreams were fading and they put Liverpool under tremendous pressure, this saw Anthony correctly showing the yellow card to 3 Liverpool players in 3 minutes at the start of the 2nd half. Anthony went on to show 8 yellow cards in the second half as he consistently and correctly used his cards as an aid to remain in firm control of this game and to be consistent in his application of law. There was little dissent from the players and whilst 9 yellow cards may seem high, we have to say that Anthony was correct and consistent in his application of law. He will not be even mentioned post match as he got all the decisions right, especially his application of the advantage law and then correctly at the next the next stoppage coming back to show the offending player the yellow card.

A stepped approach to match control, he has been seen to talk throughout to the players, he has shown high levels of fitness and got himself into some great viewing positions in and around the penalty area to get those all important key match decisions correct, as we have discussed in my blog. Including, those final moments of the game when he was close to the action even after the relentless pace of this game. One of the fittest refereeing performances that I have seen this season.

KMD`s – none seen in this game.

His body language has been positive and he has applied throughout basic application of law.

Both Assistants have supported Anthony very well – all offside decisions correct (their main duty) and they have supported well in terms of free kicks and ball out of play decisions.

Mike Jones 4th Official

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:22:14

Mike Jones has had a quiet low profile evening as Anthony Taylor has dealt consistently with matters on the field of play

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:20:10

4 minutes added time

Liverpool sub 66 on Alexander – Arnold on Mane 19 off

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:18:44

Lallana accidently caught by Walker, Anthony is right on the spot to quickly stop play

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:17:15

Nasty slip by Mane on the track behind Adam he seems ok though

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:15:19

FK to Spurs awarded by Anthony from a very close proximity as he looks to keep this game under control in the final closing minutes.

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:13:59

8 yellow cards this half so far, can`t remember a game for some time with 8 yellow cards in a half can you?

Yellow Card

Alderweireld reckless and his first yellow of the season – quite correct again as Anthony remains consistent in his reading of careless / reckless challenges

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:10:06

Spurs sub Son 7 off Janssen 9 on

Liverpool Sub – Lucas  21 off Klavin 17 on

Yellow Card

Dier fk signalled by Adam Nunn as Anthony shows Dier the yellow card following his reckless challenge

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:06:07

Liverpool advantage as Lallana is fouled by Wanjama – In this situation a fk would have been the best option not a clear advantage and a foul fk required.

Spurs sub Dembele 19 off Sissoko 17  on

Liverpool sub Coutinho 10 off Can 23 on

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:02:37

Spurs are sensing their Premier League title challenge could well be over tonight as they attempt to get back in the game. Hence the tempo this half. Match Officials need to rise with this and keep firm control on the game.

RCT at 2017-02-11 20:00:11

Yellow Card

Winks yellow card reckless challenge, as the cards mount up and the players need to calm down somewhat, as they are giving Anthony no choice. I think the we could well be seeing a 2nd yellow coming up what are your thoughts?

Spurs sub – Eriksen 23 off Winks 29 on

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:54:58

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:52:38

Mane offside correct signal by Adam and very good position in line with the 2nd rearmost Spurs defender

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:47:54

Eriksen foul throw in correctly penalised and the throw in goes to Liverpool – again good to see our top referees applying basic law

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:46:23

3 Liverpool yellow cards in 3 minutes shows the pressure they are under in the 2nd half as Spurs press hard to get back in this game.

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:45:14

Kane offside – Stephen Child correctly raises his flag – confirmed by replay

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:44:11

FK to Liverpool plenty of players in that last challenge but again Anthony quite correct in his reading of the foul

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:38:29

FK to Liverpool foul by Walker on Lallana again awarded by Anthony from a close and effective position

Half Time Summary

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:25:43

For me to half time Anthony has shown:

Very good overall match control of a very high profile live TV game!

A stepped approach to match control, he has talked to players, correct showing of a yellow card to Son after the excellent application of the advantage clause.

He is getting into great viewing positions in and around the penalty area (as we have discussed in my blog) to get those all important  key decisions right – foul on Son 33rd minute, just outside the Liverpool penalty area.

Fitness – superior acceleration and dynamic movement, a first class half performance and one Anthony will need to come out in the 2nd half and keep up the high standard he has set in the first half.

His body language is positive and he is applying basic application of law.

Both Assistants have offered very good support and are well in tune with the game and also they are reading Anthony`s overall view of challenges and his match control.

Half Time

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:17:46

7th ck to Liverpool

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:16:07

1 minute added time

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:15:36

Ball not fully out of play therefore no stoppage and quite right

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:14:41

Free kick to Liverpool as AT correctly judges a foul by Dembele

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:12:57

6th ck to Liverpool as Anthony`s position gives him a great view of players in close proximity in the penalty area

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:11:11

Offside flag from Stephen Child – right to flag – AT acknowledges the flag and allows play to continue

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:07:33

Silly flare up Henderson and Wanyama on the half way line – Anthony very quickly in to manage the players, calm things, speak to both players – all that was needed, and get on with the game.

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:05:23

Milner foul on Son just outside the Liverpool defending penalty area that was a great spot Anthony and this was down to his close proximity and viewing angle very positive and correct re start just outside penalty area.

RCT at 2017-02-11 19:02:39

Throw in to Liverpool, did you notice that Adam was not sure of re start direction so he has put out a lower arm first to ensure correct re start of play- Anthony has then led good teamwork – throw ins close to you are sometimes the hardest to judge correctly

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:59:38

Good advantage by Anthony to Liverpool Son reckless on Firmino at the next stoppage AT shows Son the Yellow Cardvery good refereeing all round here and expected by all

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:57:08

Great chance for Son equally well saved by Mignolet – ck to Spurs

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:55:12

Good signal from SC fk to Spurs – Good teamwork

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:54:00

Ck to Liverpool again good detection by SC as Mane`s effort is saved by Lloris not clear on first view but clear on replay

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:52:12

Fk to Liverpool good detection by Anthony as play moves close to the touchline and Anthony moves across towards his active Assistant SC

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:49:55

GOAL! Mane again what a finish – Spurs have to attack now and this will make for an open game

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:48:12

Mane what a great through ball by Wijnaldum and a great finish. I thought Davies was going to bring Mane down on route to goal, this is where the DOGSO law makes players think twice, great move and goal.

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:45:11

Ball just out of play for a throw in to Spurs Adam Nunn with a clear signal

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:42:45

Anthony is showing very good early fitness with good view and angle achieved

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:40:37

Stephen Child would have had a good view of that and no fk awarded to Spurs as Mane fouls Davies – Anthony Taylor looking for support there.

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:37:58

Liverpool ck followed immediately by another as Anthony Taylor takes up the prescribed viewing position from the ck, keep an eye on his positioning tonight

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:36:25

Both Assistants showing good early movement along the touchline as play moves close to them

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:35:14

First free kick to Liverpool foul by Kyle Walker – Playing surface is looking in very good condition after the overnight snow.

Assistant Referees

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:32:21

For the neutral, this could be some game. Goals are virtually guaranteed as is the high-octane entertainment that both bring to the party.

This is a game that will have a natural flow to it and certainly isn’t one that would benefit from a stop-start performance from the man in the middle.

AnthonyTaylor will deserve as much praise as the two teams if it becomes the spectacle we expect.

Pre Match Build Up

RCT at 2017-02-11 18:16:50

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the second of our live REF CAM commentary games Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur which is to played at the iconic stadium of Anfield a ground steeped in tradition and one where they play you will never walk alone as you walk out on to the field of play. A wonderful stadium, full of atmosphere and very special.

Tomorrow we will be covering at 1.30pm Burnley v Chelsea and then onto our 4pm kick off when we see Swansea City v Leicester City in what is now a vital relegation game for both teams.

Jürgen Klopp attempts to rectify an alarming run of results, his team have won once in 10, whereas Tottenham are unbeaten in 10 games and will go seven points clear of Liverpool with a rare league win at Anfield tonight. The hosts are, however, have not lost to Spurs since November 2012.
