Final Post Match Thoughts

AM at 2016-05-18 22:08:29

That was certainly a game of 2 halves Liverpool dominated the first half and going in with a 1-0 lead at half time with Sevilla coming out in the 2nd half a different team and scoring that key and crucial goal after 17 seconds to make it 1-1 and then going on win the game with some ease.

As for the 3rd team then the referee Jonas Eriksson has led the team with his presence and his excellent reading overall of foul / non foul particularly from the early stages with a number of free kick awarded early on as we discussed in my blog. This was how he built up his decision making accuracy, match control and player respect achieved through his correct key match judgements and was as we discussed at half time. In the 2nd half and the crucial 3rd Sevilla goal has seen Mathias Klasenius Assistant Referee incorrectly raise his flag for offside and we have seen Jonas Eriksson clearly and correctly wave down the flag as the ball had last been played by the Liverpool Player (Clyne) and not a Sevilla player and therefore this Sevilla Player was onside and this was a lack of concentration and judgement by the Assistant Referee and this led to the controversy that followed on the technical area touchline as Skrtel (sub) is shown the yellow card for dissent. If Klasenius had just delayed and kept his focus then the controversy that followed would not have been seen and this is what can happen when teamwork between officials breaks down on the key match decisions.

8 yellow cards (1 in the first half and 7 in the 2nd half)) just go to show how the tempo increased in the 2nd half particularly after the Sevilla 2nd and 3rd goals. Jonas Eriksson was extremely consistent and focussed on any time delay tactics from Sevilla and he correctly showed no mercy to any transgressions from Sevilla Players in this respect.

He has overall led the team in a very good fashion and been strong, brave and correct in his key match judgements overall and also for his correct reading of the 3rd Sevilla goal and subsequent waving down of Mathias Klasenius incorrect flag.

Daniel Warnmark far side Assistant Referee has supported the referee in a low key but effective manner.

The Referees Presence

First Half thoughts

AM at 2016-05-18 20:43:26

Jonas Eriksson has to date controlled this game in a first class manner –

He has achieved this by his early detection of foul / non foul leading up to the first yellow card correctly shown in the 29th minute to Lovren of Liverpool.

There have been 2 key match penalty kick decisions and for me on both occasions the referees has judged these consistently and correctly. It is the one area of the game where we still opinion and for me from the referees view and also that of his 2 colleagues then no penalty kick on each occasion has been awarded.

What our your thoughts on these 2 key match decisions? please see my separate blog.

11th and 39th minutes as we describe and talk through each key match penalty decision.

Opinion will always be divided on these key match decisions please get in touch with your view?

Both Assistants have supported the referee well – Sturridge offside goal is correct as he attempts to play the ball in an offside position and also both Assistants have supported well in terms of non free kick awards.

Half Time

AM at 2016-05-18 20:32:19

Liverpool 1 Sevilla 0

1 MINUTE MINIMUM ADDITIONAL TIME

43

AM at 2016-05-18 20:30:46

Ball dropping zone from that last L. gk clearance sees the referee in a great position to judge no foul

42

AM at 2016-05-18 20:29:28

Ball is just out of play and a raised flag by DW far side AR and then directional signal confirms that the ball is out of play and the directional restart of play

Liverpool in full flight

AM at 2016-05-18 20:27:23

A further penalty shout for handball against Sevilla player and again in consistency the referee again awards no penalty kick as the ball is played to hand reference my earlier blog

37

AM at 2016-05-18 20:25:27

Prior to the ck being taken for Liverpool the referee speaks to players concerning grappling – ck is then taken and the goal is disallowed for offside against Sturridge

27

AM at 2016-05-18 20:14:36

Ball brushes last off a Sevilla player and out of play for me a ck but a gk is awarded? Additional Referees are on the goal line and this should have been detected as a ck to Liverpool

AM at 2016-05-18 20:10:42

Advantage to Liverpool a good opportunity for the referee to again apply the advantage clause

Rain is falling heavily

AM at 2016-05-18 20:08:00

This will effect the playing surface and again another factor for the match officials to take into account

18

AM at 2016-05-18 20:06:05

Further free kick to Liverpool – no advantage to be played as the referee brings back play – very good hold of gaze here by the referee if you miss a challenge like that one then it can lead to retribution by players

Early thoughts so far?

AM at 2016-05-18 20:04:12

The referee is building up a good rapport with the players and showing good early judgements which in turn is enhancing his match control

Early shout there for a penalty kick to Liverpool but the ball is driven and hits the lower arm of the Sevilla players from a short distance – no penalty for me is correct

10

AM at 2016-05-18 19:57:50

Good clearance by Sevilla as the Additional Assistant Referee takes up a good view
