Full time analysis.

The match officials controlled this game from start to finish. They worked hard in the early stages and reaped the benefit later. The second half was played at a slow pace which helped Real Madrid and they were happy to play keep ball. Always dangerous on attack Real could have scored more and their sudden movement from one end to the other always meant that the officials had to keep on their toes. This they did and as a team functioned really well. They managed this event extremely well and Rizzoli was probably the calmest person at Anfield. The far side assistant had a faultless game and his colleague on the near side demonstrated full concentration, even when the game went to sleep. Substitutions were well controlled. The game was virtually over at half time but our colleagues managed the game to a successful conclusion and this was good to witness. Well done.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:35:12

Referee Rizzoli brings the game to an end,

Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 3.

At the moment the other game in this Group is 0-0.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:33:42

2 mins of added time as the Anthem is sung again. Great supporters who expected more but also respect good footballers and have richly applauded the talent on show from Spain.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:31:11

Sterling clips Pepe and the referee is in straight away with a quick word to defuse any issues.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:26:44

Corner well defended by Real Madrid,

12 off and No 18 Nacho comes on.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:25:38

Well, how do you think this referee has performed this evening?

RD at 2014-10-22 21:24:55

Corner to Liverpool but nothing comes from it again.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:23:51

Kroos off and No 24 Illarra on

RD at 2014-10-22 21:21:20

Can fouls and free kick given correctly.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:17:25

Ronaldo goes off to be substituted by No 6 Khedira

RD at 2014-10-22 21:16:52

Lallana offside again

RD at 2014-10-22 21:15:34

Despite coming close final ball is touched around the post but Lallana is clearly offside and the far assistant obliges again with the flag. Great concentration.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:13:07

Sterling tests Casillas. corner given. Defended but Liverpool attack and then loose the ball. Real Madrid slow it down again. It’s Barcelona at weekend, is this on their mind?

RD at 2014-10-22 21:09:58

Liverpool subs

14 off and Can 23 on

10 off and Markovic 50 on

RD at 2014-10-22 21:08:33

Offside again correct

RD at 2014-10-22 21:06:51

Even the best miss sometimes. Mignolet saves and corner awarded but nothing comes from it.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:05:32

Another Liverpool corner comes to nothing.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:05:08

As a referee, you cannot relax and take your eye off the ball. Ronaldo steals the ball and almost scores again.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:03:16

Offside flag denotes a free kick but whistle was a little too quick.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:02:14

If all of the ball does not cross the line, then no throw in is awarded. Well done nearside assistant.

RD at 2014-10-22 21:01:18

Rarely is this referee out of camera shot and this is what Keith Hackett has been saying in the past few weeks. Be aware and learn from Rizzoli, Kuipers and our own Clattenburg. Great fitness, movement, awareness and anticipation.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:58:42

Watch the little signals and words off the ball as the referee wants players to speed up or just might have caught an opponent slightly. Great interpersonal skills.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:55:26

Liverpool offside through Sterling. Excellent flag from far assistant. He has been really good this evening.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:54:15

Corner to Liverpool, Casillas punches clear. but another one follows.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:53:13

Good advantage to Real Madrid but not recognised signal from referee.

Free kick to Liverpool as Isco fouls.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:51:07

Liverpool corner, but nothing accrues.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:50:31

Martin Tyler got it right but I would have expected it from him.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:49:46

The answer to the question is Raul and he scored 71 all with Real Madrid.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:49:05

As we have said subs change games, keep your eyes open!

RD at 2014-10-22 20:47:40

Subs for Liverpool as the Referee kicks off.

Balotelli off and Lallana 20 on

RD at 2014-10-22 20:40:35

Quiz question.

Who holds the record for the most Champions League goals, before kick off tonight? How many is it?

RD at 2014-10-22 20:39:17

Half Time Analysis.

The Referee has kept a tight grip on proceedings, especially in the early stages when play was a little frenetic, but after the first goal, he has let the game breathe and Real Madrid have used this to their advantage with some fantastic football. 3-0 in front at the interval and well in control. Kroos was correctly cautioned for his deliberate attempt to stop Sterling but that apart, the game has been played in a good spirit. The Referee will now be briefing his team not to become complacent in the second half and to work hard to put the game to bed without any major incident, as I said earlier, this can always happen when a team in so much on top.

Liverpool need to give it a go and I think we can expect changes for the second half. Let’s wait and see.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:32:54

Coutinho rattles a post. Great effort.

The referee brings the game to a halt for half time.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:31:30

One minute of additional time.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:30:03

Rodriguez fouled and free kick awarded. Assistant in tune with the referee.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:29:22

We have all officiated in one sided games but this is when the referee and his colleagues really need to keep focused for that incident which may just happen at any time. Players do silly things when they get frustrated.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:27:34

Great movement by far assistant, keeping pace with second rearmost defender.

From corner another goal materialises. Messy, but they all count. Benzema has the final touch. Real go 3 up.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:25:38

Pull back by Isco and free kick awarded much to the enjoyment of the home crowd.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:24:55

Referee  has moved up a gear. Had his rest dare I suggest. Now fluid movement .

Flag up for offside, correctly given. Watch the signals, easy to understand.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:22:09

First real misdemeanour and Rizzoli does not disappoint as he cautions Kroos for a deliberate impediment.Yellow Card

RD at 2014-10-22 20:18:58

Foul by Sterling immediately penalised. Correct again.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:18:25

Referee has started to get too narrow and immediately gets in the way. A lesson even for the top officials.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:17:02

RD at 2014-10-22 20:16:49

Another corner to Real Madrid.

Kroos to take and Benzema finally heads a simple goal after they play keep ball again. Top drawer. Real Madrid 2 Liverpool 0

RD at 2014-10-22 20:14:06

Real Madrid are just keeping the ball and out of the blue it’s  Ronaldo again but this time just wide.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:11:35

Look out for the quiz question at half time.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:11:01

That takes Ronaldo one ahead of Messi in terms of Champions League goals. Now 70 in total.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:09:33

Pure poetry – Ronaldo. Real Madrid take the lead 1-0

RD at 2014-10-22 20:06:51

Corner to Real Madrid. Referee is in straight away with verbal warning for holding. Immediate respect as it stops.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:05:14

Watch the referee’s movement.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:04:00

Great spot by referee for handball by Rodriguez. No complaints.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:02:03

Offside decision against Balotelli is correct. Officials have started really well.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:01:08

Referee very calm as Real have player off field. Takes his time before he restarts play.

RD at 2014-10-22 20:00:05

Great eye contact between Referee and his Assistant before throw in awarded.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:59:07

Liverpool have started well and gain a corner in front of the Kop.

Ball headed out for another corner.

Watch for the grappling!

RD at 2014-10-22 19:57:47

Good decision by far side assistant for offside.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:54:29

Good to see referee letting play develop in front of him.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:52:50

No free kick against Arbeloa. Good cross arms by Referee but looked like a free kick,

Offside decision correct.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:49:58

Free kick against Henderson, spot on.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:48:49

Good to see the officials in a more normal kit after the beach ware from an earlier round.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:46:56

An early foul on Ronaldo by Henderson. He is pumped up.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:46:09

The Referee Nicola Rizzoli gets us underway.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:41:16

Enjoy the Anfield anthem – believe me it is very emotional when you are waiting to officiate in this ground.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:39:45

Just about 5 minutes to kick off. The storms from earlier this week have passed but it is still raining at Anfield. This kind of weather will not suit the Spanish side, so can Liverpool use this to their advantage.

The wet surface will see the ball zip around, making the first touch important for control. This could add extra pressure on the refereeing team as they decide what is careless or reckless. Will players use the conditions to their benefit? Nicola Rizzoli will be aware of these possibilities and he will be bringing all his experience to the fore, to ensure challenges are acceptable.

RD at 2014-10-22 19:30:05

Our officials this evening are all from Italy.

Referee: Nicola Rizzoli

Assistant Referee 1 – Renato Faverani

Assistant Referee 2 – Andrea Stefani

Additional Assistant Referee 1 – Luca Bauti

Additional Assistant Referee 2 – Antonio Damato

4th Official – Mauro Tonolini

UEFA have recognised the importance of this game and have appointed one of the most experienced referees in the world today. Nicola Rizzoli, 44 years of age and an Architect by profession, has been officiating on Serie A for 12 years. He has been on the FIFA panel of referees since 2007 and last year refereed the 2013 Champions League Final at Wembley before being appointed to represent his country at this year’s World Cup Finals in Brazil. He refereed 4 games in the competition, including the Final on 13th July, in the Estadio do Maracana between Germany and Argentina.

Our report of that game by Keith Hackett confirmed the belief that this referee was a good choice for the final. We now know that he did not let himself or his colleagues down. Fit, mobile and proactive, with good interpersonal skills, which players from both sides respected, it will be pleasing to see him perform exceptional well in this important game. We wish him and his Italian colleagues all the best in tonight’s game.

To-night we are covering the Match day 3, Group B game in the Champions League, between Liverpool and Real Madrid at Anfield. This is what the Liverpool fans have been waiting for since the draw was made and will be very supportive of their team, despite an indifferent start to the Premier League campaign.

Real Madrid, the current European Cup holders and one of the most famous Club sides in the world, come to Anfield in fine form having won 6 of their 8 games in La Liga scoring 30 goals and they top Group B with 6 points from their two games. Liverpool have three points, the same points as Basle, who play Ludogorets in the other game this evening.

Carlo Ancelotti has assembled a super squad of players and their attacking approach sees them currently third in La Liga behind Barcelona and Sevilla, but two of their stars, Bale and Ramos, will not feature tonight. Real Madrid will be hoping that they will be fit for this weekend’s game against Barcelona, which hails the return of Luis Suarez. What a connection!

Brendan Rodgers, however, will hope the crowd will lift his team to a famous victory and he looks to certain members of his squad to live up to their potential and give him the three points that they will cherish.

Stay with us and enjoy the football as European nights return to Merseyside.
