Liverpool v Manchester City

Liverpool v Manchester City

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 2 - 1

Summary:

It's no accident that Mark Clattenburg has avoided much of the criticism that many of his refereeing colleagues have endured this season. He has a quality and intensity to his game that others simply don't have. He has the respect of the players, they seem to sense that 'things will be done properly today'. There is far more acceptance of his actions. He reduces the margin of error by following through into areas of the field of play that others choose to view from a distance, thus creating better viewing angles and always being the optimum distance from the action. He also seems to be mentally stronger, this would have come in part from his coming to terms with and overcoming setbacks in his career that would have written others off. We've not got too much time today to reflect on the game, so here are the talking points
  • Superb match control and quality of decision making that underlines Mark Clattenburg's credentials as England's top referee
  • Excellent support from the two assistant referees Simon Beck and Stuart Burt who were on top form today
  • A fantastic game of football where the referee and his two assistants matched the quality of the players on show!

That engender that the Referee conserved earlier is being rewarded as he his comfortably moving well from end to end as play fluctuates!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:49:28
Calming words to Henderson from the Referee who made his point!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:48:23
3 minutes added time!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:47:43
Almost 2-2 as Silva goes close, Clattenburg in close attendance, no surprise there!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:46:03
Sturridge blows a chance to seal the points, well we thought it would be a grandstand finish didn’t we!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:44:30
Yellow CardI rest my case as substitute Boney see’s yellow for a nasty elbow in an aerial challenge

RH at 2015-03-01 14:43:12
When substitutions were made i posed the question would they present new challenges, well since Milner has been on he’s been cautioned and a Liverpool player has been cautioned for v tackle on him!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:41:35
Yellow CardA Reckless challenge by Lallana on Milner, spot on!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:40:43
Yellow CardGreat awareness by the Referee to see that Milner clearly held his opponent after they both went to ground

RH at 2015-03-01 14:38:44
Clattenburg on hand in the final third to penalise that Toure careless challenge!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:37:52
Interesting hearing Gary Neville’s comments regarding Man City, has that extra midfield player in Liverpool’s formation proved crucial? If you consider the Refereeing implications, its mean’t that Liverpool have pressed high up so play has been concentrated at times and Liverpool have shown plenty of bite in midfield, tactics have implications for Referee!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:34:34
There are substitutions and the surface is changing with the continuous rain, new challenges for the Referee?

RH at 2015-03-01 14:33:26
GOAL!Philippe Coutinho with a wonder strike! 2-1

RH at 2015-03-01 14:30:31
He got in the way during that City attack, first time today!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:28:48
You just know that this game would not look so ‘easy’ to control if other Referees were in charge today, believe me this is NOT an easy game to handle!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:27:47
Mark Clattenburg busy setting things up for a ceremonial free kick following that last Zabeletta careless challenge!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:26:33
The twitter feed is quiet at the moment, i guess you’re all busy getting tips from the Match Officials on this game!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:24:51
The Referee is down to walking pace at the moment, that’s sensible, he’ll need to conserve hid energy where he can because i suspect that we’re going to see a grandstand finish!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:22:23
Any young Referee should look at the Referees movement within the final third of the field of play, that last sustained Liverpool attack showed the Referee moving across the edge of the penalty area to maintain good viewing angles, good viewing angles result in correct decisions, correct decisions build confidence!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:19:13
Some may say that one or two other yellow cards may have been shown by now, but if we’re to manage situations and reduce the number of yellow cards show in the Premier League, then this Refereeing performance is a text book lesson in how to do it!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:16:18
Yellow Card Samir Nasri proving that you can’t manage some challenges, no complaints from anyone with that caution!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:15:15
Mark Clattenburg earlier choosing to have words with Mangala following a borderline challenge on Moreno, in most games i’m sure a caution would have followed, but  in this game with this Referee its acceptable that words of warning are ok

RH at 2015-03-01 14:12:43
No goal Skrtel offside, yet again Simon Beck is spot on! great work!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:10:28
Great ‘non-flag’ from Simon Beck as Lallana is not signaled offside

RH at 2015-03-01 14:09:36
Kompany late on Sterling, the Referee making it quite clear that the next one will earn him a yellow card!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:08:39
There’s an intensity and momentum in this Referees game that you don’t get in a lot of Premier League Refereeing performances!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:07:37
During that last Liverpool attack as the key challenge was made on Lallana Clattenburg was only a couple of metres away! superb!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:06:12
Stuart Burt clearly switched as he flags Samir Nasri offside

RH at 2015-03-01 14:03:51
Early City pressure, we’re underway!

RH at 2015-03-01 14:02:53

Glenn Turner is ready to keep you fully tuned in to the Arsenal Everton Premier League game, can the Gunners repeat their impressive League form of late following their Champions League outing last Wednesday. Will Everton close the gap on Newcastle and move into the top half of the League? But don’t go away after that, Andy Martin is your guide as Chelsea and Tottenham contest the Capital One Cup at Wembley! Clashes between these two teams are never dull, the Match Officials will need to be at the top of their game for this one!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:55:10
Three very impressive first half performances from the Match Officials in a game that has an intensity, passion and commitment all played at a fast pace!  Clattenburg is clearly the man for these games, as with the Chelsea Man City game he seems capable of Refereeing at a different level! No cautions or controversy so far, whether or not it continues we’ll have to see, but so far he and his colleges take no baggage into the second half, the quality of offside decision making is also impressive, so its pleasing to report that the lads are on top of their games, they’ll need to be, because the second half is going to be full on!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:46:24

Nice to see that Sky don’t know the Fourth official has changed! one up to ‘You are the Ref!’ one minute added time!

There may have been no cautions so far but this game is being played with an intensity that makes it no easy game to control!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:44:30
The first half ends as it started! great energy from both teams!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:43:12
Aguero not flagged offside wide left, looked level so again yet another correct call, Both Simon Beck and Stuart Burt having great games so far!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:41:36
Another Toure pass to Dzeko, tight call but Simon Beck is spot on, another great offside call

RH at 2015-03-01 13:39:08

RH at 2015-03-01 13:38:21
Simon Beck rightly flagging Samir Nasri  offside

RH at 2015-03-01 13:37:40
Philippe Coutinho accidentally caught in the face, rightly no free kick was awarded

RH at 2015-03-01 13:36:15
Just a free kick but nothing more as Kompany carelessly challenges Sterling

RH at 2015-03-01 13:35:26
No offside flag as Lallana is played in, close call but a great ‘no flag’ from Stuart Burt!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:34:17
No free kick as Can sure fouled Silva?

RH at 2015-03-01 13:32:56
Midfield advantage played following a late challenge on Dzeko, the players confidence in the Referee is making this possible!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:31:38
Would you believe we’ve been playing 30 minutes!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:30:39
Again the Referee choosing to manage that challenge on Sterling, we still await the first caution

RH at 2015-03-01 13:28:50
Stuart Burt goes goal kick Mark Clattenburg goes corner, i’m with Stuart Burt on that one!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:27:33
Toure gets firm words from the Referee following that midfield challenge, but nothing more!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:25:57
GOAL!Dzeko scores from an Agero pass! 1-1

RH at 2015-03-01 13:25:15
As covered pre-match the tactics and line ups of the teams suggest certain characteristics of any game, clearly Mark Clattenburg is fully aware of these tactical considerations, question is; are enough of his colleagues doing the same?

RH at 2015-03-01 13:23:05
Clattenburg goes wide left of the penalty area in fluid play to track Sterling during that last Liverpool attack, great stuff!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:21:26
Great midfield advantage played as Can was fouled in that Liverpool attack

RH at 2015-03-01 13:19:33
Another corner/goal kick decision at the Liverpool end, the Referee on the spot only a  short distance away, no mid-field ‘box to box’ plodding today!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:18:03
Looking at replays of the goal Mark Clattenburg was only a few metres away from Jordan Henderson when he pulled the trigger, great Refereeing!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:15:35
Lallana goes to ground having conceded the free kick, a chance to get breath!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:14:49
What an opening 15 minutes, this game is being played at a breathtaking pace!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:13:41
Sergio Aguero in on goal, under lining my pre-match point that defender challenges on him will need to be closely monitored in the final third of the field of play!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:12:32
Simon Beck and then Stuart Burt fully tuned in with great offside decisions, well done!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:11:09
GOAL! Henderson open the scoring with a cracking strike!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:10:23
Already this fast paced game has called upon both Assistants to make big calls!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:09:42
No goal! Stuart Burt spot on with the flag!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:08:57
Lallana in on goal with Mark Clattenburg sprinting flat out to get the viewing angle!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:08:00
The extra player in midfield for Liverpool already putting City under pressure, that challenge by Lallana being the case in point, Mangala needed that free kick

RH at 2015-03-01 13:05:59
Lallana rightly penalised for that trip

RH at 2015-03-01 13:03:41
City 4-4-2 in evidence as Dzeko plays Aguro in but Simon Beck is spot on with the offside flag!

RH at 2015-03-01 13:01:31
Already Mark Clattenburg goes wise left to track Sterling and Lallana

RH at 2015-03-01 13:00:09
Our match Referee Mark Clattenburg gets us underway!

RH at 2015-03-01 12:57:52
Change to the Match Official’s line up where following the injury to Chris Foy, Neil Swarbrick was in action yesterday and Kevin Friend is the Fourth Official for this game

RH at 2015-03-01 12:54:46
Will Lallana play wide left or right to offer Liverpool width, will this affect the patrol path of the Referee, will he have to go wide to gain good viewing angles on challenges, or will he play wide right where the Assistants will need to be switched on? With Coutinho and Toure capable of supplying match winning passes from mid-field, Mark Clattenburg will have to take care not to get tangled up in play, we know from previous games that he will hang back to avoid this.  With Manchester City playing 4-4-2 where Dzeko and Aguero will be up front it will be important that Mark Clattenburg obtains good viewing angles in the final third of the field of play where the crucial defender/attacker challenges will be made, will the games talking points come from these situations?  From a Technical perspective there is plenty for the Referee to consider in this game!

RH at 2015-03-01 12:50:46
Our Match Referee today is Mark Clattenburg, his Assistant Referees are Simon Beck and Stuart Burt, The Fourth Official is Neil Swarbrick

RH at 2015-03-01 12:47:59
