This was a Refereeing performance that was strong on technical merit, in terms of positioning and movement in particular. First half penalty incident apart i thought that Matej Jug missed very little, this was no accident as he moved around the field of play well and creating good viewing positions and keeping a good distance from play. He also perfected the knack of holding back in mid-field as play developed, thus avoiding getting caught up unnecessarily. The cautions were all spot on and well timed, his control was never in doubt. As i said at half time I thought he should have awarded Ludogorets a first half penalty, the TV pundits thought it would have been ‘soft’ but the push was there and there could have been no complaints. However the penalty that was awarded to Liverpool was spot on as there was contact with Borini’s ankle . Perhaps a little bit more composure on occasions, i recall his shouting out at Balotelli from distance. But make no mistake this was a good performance. I’m sure we’ll see more of this Referee in this season’s Champions League

As we play out the four minutes added time, we can only wonder what was in the mind of the visiting keeper as lost control of the ball!

Penalty to Liverpool and a as the Ludogorets keeper impedes Borini, Gerrard scores from the spot 2-1

Lodogorets equalise! 1-1
RH at 2014-09-16 21:29:19
Strong flag by the Assistant following that careless challenge on Borini, good teamwork
RH at 2014-09-16 21:27:39
Both teams making changes to their players, but it seems to have little effect so far as the game is still open and the Referees patrol pattern is unchanged as we approach the closing stages
RH at 2014-09-16 21:23:32
Balotelli scores! who else!
RH at 2014-09-16 21:22:48
Balotelli testing the Referee’s patience, his protests may earn him a caution if he persists
RH at 2014-09-16 21:19:31
25 of Ludogorets Minev ,rightly cautioned for a late and reckless challenge on Borini , worst challenge of the game so far!
RH at 2014-09-16 21:13:51
The Referee adopts a slightly deeper position at corners than would be seen in Premier League games, this is most likely because he is monitoring the far post with the Additional Assistant Referee monitoring the near post
RH at 2014-09-16 21:09:48
Play is held up as the grounds team make running repairs to the goal net and Liverpool make two substitiutes
RH at 2014-09-16 21:07:30
Continual demands on the Referees fitness as play moves from end to end as both teams counter attack at pace, the Assistants are also continuously involved in open play, so concentration levels are being well maintained
RH at 2014-09-16 21:03:26
Team work is looking good this evening, although both Assistants haven’t been extended too much so far, they are both moving ok and judging their involvement level well.
RH at 2014-09-16 20:59:34
A ‘good old fashioned’ pacing out of the 9.15 metre wall at that last Liverpool ceremonial free kick, its a spray free zone!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:57:31
Second caution to Caiçara of Ludogorets following that reckless challenge on Sterling. The Referee again being in a great position to add credibility to his decision
RH at 2014-09-16 20:55:15
The Referee continues to monitor and motion to players who are preparing to receive an attacking cross in open play, good stuff!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:52:04
Was Lallana impeded in that last Liverpool attack? there seemed to be more ‘shoulder to shoulder’ contact that time
RH at 2014-09-16 20:49:00
UEFA’s head of refereeing Pierluigi Collina outlined to his group of top officials recently the need for them to devote more time to preparing for their Champions League games, does it appear that our Referee tonight has done his homework?

Matej Jug gets the second half underway!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:40:49
A very strong Technical performance from Referee Matej Jug, his movement and positioning has enabled him to create good viewing angles and identify careless challenges and the one reckless tackle, other than one incident he is also astute in not getting caught up in play as both teams are breaking away at will with the ball. He is also prepared to talk to players in order to take the heat out of the game. However the main talking point of the first half was Lovren’s push on an opponent in the penalty area. The Referee creates an ideal view angle but fails to award a penalty kick. This being my only criticism of his first half performance

The Referee ends the first half!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:30:35
1 minute added time!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:30:22
Superb advantage played in that last Ludogorets attack, signaled in classic UEFA fashion!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:27:04
With the Additional Assistant Referee viewing the far post, the Referee is confident to pursue a forward patrol path through the left hand channel
RH at 2014-09-16 20:25:03
The Referee was well placed to see that ‘blind side’ shirt pull by Sterling
RH at 2014-09-16 20:23:21
Will the Referee’s patience be tested if Lallana breaks up play by deliberately tripping an again?
RH at 2014-09-16 20:20:42
The match tempo is starting to rise, those words earlier to Henderson and Abel of Lodogorets have woken the crowd up a bit
RH at 2014-09-16 20:17:54
Some impressive technical skills demonstrated by the Referee in this first half hour, he has created some good viewing positions and is reading play well
RH at 2014-09-16 20:14:56
Despite being in a great position the Referee fails to award a penalty despite a clear push by Dejan Lovren, it looked clear cut from the TV pictures!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:10:44
Philippe Coutinho held his arms close to his body at that last Ludogorets attacking cross in a manner to avoid a ‘handball’ offence!
RH at 2014-09-16 20:06:24
The Referee having the obligatory words with a player of each team before that last Liverpool corner
RH at 2014-09-16 20:02:55
Referee Matej Jug is already demonstrating good Refereeing technique in his movement around the field of play, he anticipates well and moves across the playing area to avoid getting caught up in play
RH at 2014-09-16 19:59:25
Interesting to see the Referee motioning to players in the penalty area as the ball is about to be crossed in open play!
RH at 2014-09-16 19:54:08
Both teams are attacking at pace with the ball, if this pattern of play continues the Referee’s fitness will be severely tested!
RH at 2014-09-16 19:52:29
The Referee sensibly re-starting play with a drop ball following a head injury to the visitors number 7
RH at 2014-09-16 19:50:52
First caution of the match following the Ludogorets 25 committing a late and reckless tackle on Sterling
RH at 2014-09-16 19:48:17
The Referee paces out this first free kick in the final third
RH at 2014-09-16 19:46:56
Unusual to see that the active Match Officials wearing darker shirts than shorts!
RH at 2014-09-16 19:45:17
