Liverpool v Everton

FINAL SCORE: 1 – 1

So the Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Craig Pawson has a good day at the office
  • Lovern gives the Referee no option but to award Everton a match saving penalty kick
  • All cautions well merited
  • A good involvement level and sound game management
  • Sigurdsson is lucky to escape a second caution after a reckless challenge on Henderson and an advantage played

Craig Pawson will be pleased with his first ever handling of a Merseyside derby and he has every right to be. Although this game was not a full on assault of the senses as some previous Liverpool Everton games have been, the result was in doubt until the final whistle and it needed bringing home as the only key incident, the penalty, came late in 76th minute. There can be no doubt about the grounds for the penalty being sound as Lovern needlessly pushed Calvert-Lewin when he had no need to .  All the cautions were spot on and well timed, but for the sake of consistency and ‘icing on the cake’ it would have been correct to issue a second caution and red card to Sigurdsson after his reckless challenge on Henderson late in the game as Liverpool pushed forward. But that apart there was good game management, correct involvement level and effective mobility suggesting at least that Craig had something left in the tank following his Europa League game on Thursday. As can be said on occasions such as this, the Referee will not be the talking point after this game which I am sure Craig would have settled for before the game! Both Assistants were solid and they too must feel pleased as they were also in European action mid week.

Craig Pawson needs to be strong now and bring this game home! He must manage the game both in terms of tempo and time wasting, don’t ruin a good afternoons work!

81

RH at 2017-12-10 16:54:31

Martina again goes to ground, he’s not the most physical of defenders is he?

79

RH at 2017-12-10 16:51:53

What was Lovern doing there? he had no need to do it and Craig Pawson had little option but to award the spot kick!

76

RH at 2017-12-10 16:50:30

GOAL!Rooney converts and I have to say I have no sympathy for Lovern!

75

RH at 2017-12-10 16:49:18

Lovern pushes Calvert lewin and the Referee awards a penalty!

74

RH at 2017-12-10 16:47:17

Henderson gets clattered from behind, the Referee understandably plays a good advantage but I’m surprised that the offender does not receive a yellow card as that looked Reckless to me

71

RH at 2017-12-10 16:44:07

Good decision by Lee Bets as Oxlade Chamberlain returns from an offside position to lay the ball

69

RH at 2017-12-10 16:42:32

Another good advantage played as Lennon bowls over Mane but the Reds continue In attack!

68

RH at 2017-12-10 16:41:12

The game is more open now as Everton must look to attack and abandon that earlier midfield numbers policy, as we go more end to end the Referee’s fitness will be important and the after effects of his Thursday night endeavours may prove important

63

RH at 2017-12-10 16:38:14

Talking of blood and guts I thought we were going to see some as Mane flew in near Pickford as the ball came in from a cross, but the striker was flying over the keeper, Pickford kept his nerve and the whole thing was over  with no problem!

61

RH at 2017-12-10 16:34:13

But is despite Liverpool’s dominance its still only 1-0 and there is everything to play for here!

59

RH at 2017-12-10 16:32:22

It just tells you that this is not the usual blood and guts Merseyside derby when TV show split screen pictures of the Man City players getting off the bus!

56

RH at 2017-12-10 16:29:17

Two games in one for the Referee in mobility terms at the moment, Liverpool enjoying sustained periods of attacking possession where the Referee needs to sweep in behind play, whereas the visitors are attacking at pace on the break which needs lung busting explosive sprints to track play

51

RH at 2017-12-10 16:25:11

Pickford denies Liverpool a corner with a close goal line clearance, the Referee relying on Assistant Lee Betts for the accuracy of that call!

Good awareness by the referee as Scheiderlin fouled Oxlade Chamberlain off the ball as Salah was making progress, good Refereeing!

RH at 2017-12-10 16:17:37

The second half has started!

RH at 2017-12-10 16:07:26

A good first half for Craig Pawson, a couple of cautions, some decent game management and an involvement level that’s just about right in a Merseyside derby. No key match incidents and both cautions were for reckless challenges. Liverpool have been in the ascendancy and their half time lead is no surprise. Unless the visitors score there won’t be any running the clock down from Everton but Liverpool may be tempted if the tables are turned and they cannot extend their lead. The Referee will need to take into account the weather and its effects on the playing surface if the snow continues to fall, it may be a consideration on penalty area challenges in the second half.

GOAL!Salah breaks the deadlock just as Everton were hoping to go in level at half time!

Yellow CardReckless challenge Gueye from behind on Mane

40

RH at 2017-12-10 15:57:23

Just continuing that last point, its become the norm these days that the injured player stays on when a caution has been issued as the injury was dealt with whilst the caution was being managed, its just didn’t happen there, but the action was technically correct!

My spies make a good point that Henderson went off there even though the offender got a yellow card! he didn’t need to!

35

RH at 2017-12-10 15:52:20

Yellow CardCraig Pawson shows yellow to Sigurdsson after he treads late on Henderson’s ankle, that must have hurt!

34

RH at 2017-12-10 15:51:20

Solanke using an arm to fend off Gueye, Craig Pawson did well to clamp down on that before the Liverpool player got away!

33

RH at 2017-12-10 15:49:34

Useful advantage in that last phase of attacking play by Liverpool, Rooney attempting to haul in Mane, the referee doing well to keep things going!

32

RH at 2017-12-10 15:48:19

Regarding my earlier comment about conditions, the surface is obviously becoming greasy!

31

RH at 2017-12-10 15:46:44

Rooney muscles out Milner with Craig Pawson doing well to close in through the left channel, good stuff all round from players and Referee!

Kenny grounds Milner and concedes a free kick in a dangerous wide position

24

RH at 2017-12-10 15:40:59

Gomez arrives late and clatters into Martina under the eyes of Assistant Adam Nunn, the Referee with game management on his mind decides to manage that one and keep his cards dry! A similar challenge may well result in a caution if the match tempo rises further!

21

RH at 2017-12-10 15:37:18

Sigurdsson let off the hook under pressure as the Ox bowls into him from behind, free kick Everton!

20

RH at 2017-12-10 15:35:51

Everton trying to neutralise Liverpool with a five man midfield, the hosts look more dangerous when they go wide, Craig Pawson is following the PGMOL policy of sweeping in behind play, which will need him to stay out of the way in midfield

19

RH at 2017-12-10 15:34:50

Great challenge Gueye on Mane, Referee quite rightly happy with it!

14

RH at 2017-12-10 15:30:39

Gomez finds the leg of Niasse to go over, Adam Nunn had a good view of that and rightly in my view allowed a goal kick to run

11

RH at 2017-12-10 15:27:09

Already there are signs of game management by Everton as they seem to be in no rush to some restarts underway!

9

RH at 2017-12-10 15:26:01

Mane slips as he’s about to close in on goal, if that’s more than an isolated incident then Craig Pawson will need to factor the conditions in to any borderline careless penalty area challenges!

6

RH at 2017-12-10 15:22:14

Solanke shoving Pickford in the follow up, the Referee acknowledging the contact but rightly playing on

3

RH at 2017-12-10 15:19:45

Milner clobbers Davies in midfield, the Referee just delays his whistle before awarding the free kick

RH at 2017-12-10 15:16:58

Interesting listening to Sam Allardyce’s pre match TV interview earlier this afternoon, saying that Chelsea lost yesterday because they played the same team that played in Europe mid-week, this was in response to a question regarding numerous Everton changes and Liverpool’s six changes for this game. So what does that say about the PGMOL choosing Michael Oliver and Craig Pawson for the two derby games today when both Refereed in Europe mid-week?

RH at 2017-12-10 15:16:15

If you are watching the game on TV, Adam Nunn is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Lee Betts is running the nearside touch line.

The following is an extract from the ‘Premier League Referees in Week#’ feature that appears on the You are The Ref website ahead of each Premier League Weeks action!

Liverpool v Everton

CRAIG PAWSON
Assistants: L Betts
& A Nunn
Fourth official: Martin Atkinson

The first meeting between these two eternal neighbours was a 2-2 draw in Division One way back in November, 1894 at Anfield. David Hannah and James Ross were two of nine Scots in Liverpool’s line-up, while Everton scorers Alex Latta and Bob Kelso also hailed from north of the border.

The last time was April Fool’s day, 2017; the 50th Premier League derby and 279th in all, won by goals from Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi. Anthony Taylor booked Emre Can, Tom Davies, Ross Barkley and Ashley Williams.

An even more memorable occasion, however, was the 4-4 FA Cup 5th round replay that prompted Kenny Dalglish’s resignation in February, 1991. Neil Midgley, a native of a town but a few miles further north than Taylor, was in charge as three players scored two goals each: Graeme Sharp, substitute Tony Cottee and Peter Beardsley, while Ian Rush and John Barnes chipped in with the one.

Gary Ablett, Nicky Barmby, Peter Beardsley, David Johnson, Kevin Sheedy, David Burrows, Don Hutchison, Sander Westerveld and Abel Xavier have all played for both clubs and today it’s 4th versus 10th and Sadio versus Ousmane, or Mane versus Niasse, just to be clear.

The Senagalese strikers hardly need to wait for derby day to discuss their prospects in the same group as Poland, Colombia and Japan come season’s end, but they will both hope to catch the eye without having to come off the bench to do so.

Craig Pawson was on Europa League duty in Austria on Thursday with Lee Betts and Adam Nunn, all of whom will have flown home licking their lips at their Sunday lunchtime menu.

All you need to know about Craig Pawson:

Matches in 2017/18: 12 (8 on TV)
Fourth official appointments in 2017/18: 10

Yellows: 40 Reds: 4

RH at 2017-12-10 14:58:14

Belated congratulations to Craig Pawson for his appointment as Referee last Thursday on the Europa League game between FK Austria Wien and AEK Athens, the match ended in a 0-0 draw and Craig showed four yellow cards and no red cards! For those that like to know these things, Stephen Child and Adam Nunn were the Assistant Referees, Bobby Madley and Jon Moss were the Additional Assistant Referees and Lee Betts was the Fourth Official

Its derby day on Refcam and we serve up the first helping of two legendary North West derbies with the Merseyside game between Liverpool and Everton. Both teams come into this game on a high, Liverpool off the back of an impressive 5-1 drubbing of Brighton last weekend and the equally eye catching 7-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow mid-week. Everton are an improved outfit these days with good home wins over West Ham and Huddersfield underlining that Big Sam is starting to work his magic! It looks like the bragging rights will be fiercely contested today!
