Full time summary

AM at 2016-04-20 22:27:18

  • In a contrast of both halves and Liverpool`s dominance in this Merseyside derby game, the 2 goals just before half time and the Everton red card effectively ended this game for Everton. Bobby Madley as we discussed through this blog has overall read his first Merseyside game very well indeed. He has allowed good advantages after what I thought could have been a difficult first 10 minutes with Milners very early yellow card. I hoped at the time that Bobby had not set the bar too low with this yellow card, but in fairness to him he has then gone on to manage a number of situations very well by stopping play and taking the heat out of these moments and doing things in his time. The only other yellow card for Lennon was spot on and well judged by Bobby in the first half.

A key and defining moment happened in the 49th minute and Peter Kirkup came in with very good support I am sure to advise Bobby from his angle and view that Mori had committed a tackle with excessive force and endangering the safety of his opponent. Good teamwork here after we had discussed at half time whilst Peter Kirkup had a very quiet first half then his first real decision was major and a key and correct judgement. From this decision then Bobby stayed close to play, to prevent any further retribution and as the half moved on such was Liverpool`s dominance of this game that the game then had to be man managed as Everton failed to get any shot on target. Bobby went on to stay focussed and he brought this game to a safe conclusion through.

  • Well judged tolerance level of acceptable player contact and consistently applied
  • Good pro-active management at stoppages. fitness, movement and game management have all been good tonight.
  • Darren Cann has made 3 excellent offside judgements in the first half and also a good supportive fk signal for a foul against Everton 2nd half.
  • Peter Kirkup after a quiet first half, has then had to make an excellent judgement which then saw him communicate to Bobby that then saw Mori correctly sent off for serious foul play.
  • Well done Bobby Madley in your first Merseyside derby!

What were thoughts on Bobby Madley`s Refereeing performance and that of his Assistant Referees tonight?

90+7 minutes

AM at 2016-04-20 21:57:07

Full Time

Liverpool 4 Everton 0

90+5 minutes

AM at 2016-04-20 21:55:34

Sturridge is flagged offside and for me that was one were he could have kept the flag down by his side as Sturridge was level when the ball was played to him – very fine margins but this is how Assistants are judged.

AM at 2016-04-20 21:53:33

Bobby would have looked to PK for support to confirm that Joel did tip the ball over the cross bar and a ck to L. is the correct outcome

AM at 2016-04-20 21:51:22

Correct allowance of additional time bearing in mind the injury from the excessive force challenge and subsequent send off also the subs

7 minutes minimum of additional time

AM at 2016-04-20 21:49:48

AM at 2016-04-20 21:49:19

Ibe is correctly penalised for that last shirt pull as Bobby continues to penetrate the penalty areas in the final minutes of this game

AM at 2016-04-20 21:46:40

Better from Peter Kirkup who gets to the goal line for that last goal kick to E.

AM at 2016-04-20 21:45:55

Liverpool have had 33 efforts on goal with 13 on target compare that to Everton who have had 3 efforts on goal and 0 on target

AM at 2016-04-20 21:43:53

Good opportunity for Bobby to have calming words with the Everton Coach following that last free kick award in front of the technical areas. Roger East 4th Official would have communicated this to Bobby to have a calming word

Liverpool Dominance

AM at 2016-04-20 21:41:57

Important for Bobby to ensure and be thinking that Everton`s struggle to get into Liverpool`s half does not see a lack of discipline from their Players in frustration.

Liverpool sub Milner off to be replaced by Ibe

AM at 2016-04-20 21:37:03

Coutinho makes it 4-0 as Liverpool dominate this Merseyside game

AM at 2016-04-20 21:35:57

Pete Kirkup has just indicated a goal kick from some distance from the goal line could he be sure? a raised flag in this situation would be better and then to indicate a goal kick. Position though is key here and a position on the goal line would sell it much better

Final 15 minutes and added time

AM at 2016-04-20 21:33:15

Important as we enter these final 15 minutes that Bobby sticks to the basics that has seen his elevation to the FIFA list, take no risks and keep to the basics of safe refereeing

AM at 2016-04-20 21:31:08

L. offside (Sturridge) correctly indicated by Kirkup

AM at 2016-04-20 21:28:39

L. fk correctly awarded as we discussed earlier a flag from PK would have just added to the teamwork ethic in this situation

Liverpool Dominance so far

AM at 2016-04-20 21:27:18

Liverpool continue to dictate this game and Everton still have to get a shot on target – the red card which was key has seen a good player response, accept this correct decision and get on with this merseyside derby

AM at 2016-04-20 21:24:24

Firmino off Allen on

AM at 2016-04-20 21:23:41

Good opportunity for Bobby to play a good advantage to L. as they move along the touchline

E. sub

AM at 2016-04-20 21:22:18

Stones off and Pienarr on

AM at 2016-04-20 21:21:35

Sturridge onside from the pass and Peter Kirkup would have used the penalty line to assist him here in his judgement – always use as an Assistant any means such as this to assist you in your judgements

E. sub

AM at 2016-04-20 21:18:32

20 off 15 on – Bobby will be looking now for safe refereeing not to miss a thing as this could ignite this game

AM at 2016-04-20 21:17:03

The tempo from this challenge will mean that Bobby has to stay close to play to prevent any retribution = in 5 minutes sessions until he can let play out again – if not keep it tight – However as we discussed at half time from a very quiet first half for Peter Kirkup then his first major decision is to correctly support Bobby to advise red card well done here

L. SUB 27 OFF 15 ON

AM at 2016-04-20 21:13:42

AM at 2016-04-20 21:12:35

Kirkup supports this time with a very agitated flag and from this we see a Red Cardfor Funes Mori – In this situation then my feeling is that Kirkup has advised red card for excessive force endangering the safety of an opponent

AM at 2016-04-20 21:07:09

Cann comes in with a good supportive flag indication following a foul by Oviedo

Everton kick off

Half time summary

AM at 2016-04-20 21:01:12

Half time summary –

So for our Refereeing talking points so far in this game are as follows:

  • In a tense Merseyside derby game with high pressing tactics by both teams especially Liverpool then the referee overall has read the game very well he has allowed good advantages after what I thought could have been a difficult first 10 minutes with Milners early yellow card. I hoped at the time that Bobby had not set the bar too low with this yellow card, but he has then gone on to manage a number of situations by stopping play, saying” hey in my time” and taking the heat out of a few situations, because of this early yellow card then every time we see a careless challenge then expectations are yellow but this has not been the case at all. The only other yellow card for Lennon was spot on and well judged by Bobby.
  • Well judged tolerance level of acceptable player contact and consistently applied
  • Good pro-active game management at stoppages. Fitness, movement and game management have all been good. Bobby you now need to continue with this in the 2nd half.
  • Darren Cann has made 3 excellent offside judgements as per my BLOG.
  • Peter Kirkup has had a quiet first half but I am sure will be soon in the action.

Everton will out in the 2nd half to get back in this game – tempo could be up

AM at 2016-04-20 20:47:12

L. advantage again good reading from Bobby in this situation he is into the flow and reading of this game

2 additional minutes minimum of added time

AM at 2016-04-20 20:46:08

AM at 2016-04-20 20:44:14

GOAL! Origi scores that all important 1st goal at a crucial time just before half time

AM at 2016-04-20 20:43:01

Yellow Card

Lennon can have no complaints here as Milner was going past Lennon in a good attacking position

AM at 2016-04-20 20:41:34

Good position form RM to award a fk to L. good positive body language clear whistle and signal – all good ingredients for a referee

Peter Kirkup is on the far touchline

AM at 2016-04-20 20:39:09

As yet PK has not been called into the action as yet such has been Liverpool`s dominance to date of this game.

E. Advantage

AM at 2016-04-20 20:36:28

Good opportunity for Bobby to make his mark and allow a good attack for E. Good signal seen as well

AM at 2016-04-20 20:35:25

L. offside just but enough to confirm Cann raising his flag for offside

AM at 2016-04-20 20:34:40

L. ck – no grappling seen as yet – Bobby quick to turn down appeals for handball against E. rightly so when the ball was struck from very close range at the E. players arm

AM at 2016-04-20 20:31:11

Firmino on a breakaway and not offside – replays confirm correct bearing in the mind the other L. in the eyeline of DC who was offside but not active then again this was an excellent decision

AM at 2016-04-20 20:29:09

CK to L. – Darren Cann ensures that the ball is within the corner quadrant – alertness and focus seen here

AM at 2016-04-20 20:27:45

Words of advice for McCarthy as Bobby chooses to man manage the situation – when you have a very early yellow card as Milner had then expectations are that others will follow for every tackle and this was the point I was making about tolerance levels in this game and the magnitude of it

AM at 2016-04-20 20:25:05

Bobby has a decision here to make I hope he has a word with the E. player

AM at 2016-04-20 20:24:02

In that last E. attack Bobby is looking at it from a falrly central position behind play I would just like to have seen come that bit wider as he did in the last L. attack – this would create angle and better view for key match decision

AM at 2016-04-20 20:21:54

Bobby is showing a good presence and body language early in his first Merseyside Derby for him – good wide position down the left channel for that last Liverpool attack

AM at 2016-04-20 20:19:06

No fk awarded to Everton with Bobby close by – important especially early on not to let too much go and think about your match control

AM at 2016-04-20 20:17:10

Lallana careless challenge and rightly penalised by Bobby who takes his time and has some words of advice for the player – this is good management and important to use your time early and show your presence

What were your thoughts on the Milner Yellow card?  this Merseyside game is massive and one where man management are key – has Bobby set his tolerance level too low? time will tell.

AM at 2016-04-20 20:11:05

An early Yellow Cardcard for Milner and in a game of such magnitude will this yellow card be crucial for Milner? Milner did however put in an earlier careless challenge on Barry as we discussed. Little room for any further transgression.

AM at 2016-04-20 20:07:04

No offside flag from Darren Cann (technical area touchline) and as replays prove an excellent early decision from one of the worlds top assistant referees

AM at 2016-04-20 20:05:20

As Barry plays in the ball then RM detects a careless tackle by Milner and after just a slight delay gives the FK – good holding of gaze by RM in this situation – spray out for the first time

AM at 2016-04-20 20:03:35

Good sharp and positive throw in signal by RM to Liverpool – sets a good tone as a referee keep an eye on this area

AM at 2016-04-20 20:02:31

Oviedo careless tackle on Coutinho – good early detection and fk

Pre Match Build Up

AM at 2016-04-20 19:47:58

Liverpool have won five, drawn one and lost one of their last seven league fixtures, a run that leaves them in eighth place in the table, five points behind Manchester United in fifth with a match in hand.

That means continental qualification through their league placing is still very much within their grasp.

Like Liverpool, Roberto Martinez’s men have progressed in another competition; they face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday having previously made the last four of the League Cup this season.

In the Barclays Premier League, though, Everton have only picked up three points from six fixtures and drew 1-1 at home to Southampton last time out when Ramiro Funes Mori’s goal was cancelled out by Sadio Mane, leaving them 11th.

Six of the previous seven Merseyside derbies in the league have finished as draws, including Brendan Rodgers’ last match in charge of the Reds, which finished 1-1 at Goodison Park in October.

Liverpool are undefeated in 10 top-flight derbies, with Everton’s last win coming in October 2010 when Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta netted in a 2-0 triumph at Goodison.

So who will be triumphant tonight?
