FINAL SCORE: 1 - 1

That was the best game I have seen Michael Oliver have for a long time. He took centre stage for the biggest game of the day and came through with flying colours.

He rolled the dice for a few minutes when the temperature went up in the first half, but kept his nerve which proved to be extremely effective for his match control in the long run. No yellow cards in a game like that takes some doing!

Application of Law excellent

Match control excellent

Decision making excellent

Fitness excellent

Man-management excellent

Well Michael, if the hierarchy of UEFA’s Referee’s committee have not made up their decision yet and were watching that one, then you have done your chances of reaching the elite level next year no harm what so ever.

That was about as good as it gets!

Excellent positioning again after a mammoth sprint by Oliver to be right over on his AR’s side when Willian takes a tumble! Superb fitness used to excellent effect!

Minimum of 3 added minutes to be played

84

GB at 2017-11-25 20:14:29

GOAL! Willian (C 22)

That would have been interesting if Alvaro Morata (C 9) had made a move towards the ball as he was offside when that “cross/shot” came in.

Liverpool 1 v 1 Chelsea

83

GB at 2017-11-25 20:12:19

Just for the first time in the match, Michael Oliver seems to be getting in the way

81

GB at 2017-11-25 20:10:49

Oliver spotted Alvaro Morata (C 9) “going down” in the penalty area then as was quick to give him a talking to as he got up! I don’t think there was much of a real try to dupe the referee, but the officials was just letting him know that he would not fall for that today!

77

GB at 2017-11-25 20:06:09

The last 15 minutes including stoppages could be a whole different ball game as Oliver is perfectly placed again to say no hand ball offence as the bal1 is blasted at Gary Cahill (C 24)

74

GB at 2017-11-25 20:03:19

Ball to hand of the Chelsea player so no offence – Oliver looking straight at it again. No offence even if the player gains control from it.

71

GB at 2017-11-25 20:01:37

As if on cue! Oliver allows play to continue again with that advantage for a foul by Danny Drinkwater(C 6) in the iIverpool “red” area. He really wants to keep out of this game as much as he can.

70

GB at 2017-11-25 19:58:35

#lfc #cfc #livche

At half time there had only been 9 free kicks awarded even with that flurry at around 30 minutes. With the foul count still at only 15 with just 20 minutes to go, it shows how full on this game has flowed because of the tactics and style employed by Oliver.

64

GB at 2017-11-25 19:53:31

GOAL! Mohamed Salah (L 17)

Now that could make it interesting!

Liverpool 1 v 0 Chelsea

62

GB at 2017-11-25 19:50:19

The longer this game goes and the faster the tempo gets at either end, the more important the way Oliver has refereed it becomes. The players have 100% confidence in him at the moment. That risk and reward I talked about at half time is certainly paying off at the moment.

58

GB at 2017-11-25 19:47:39

The whole of the ball would have needed to be outside of the penalty area then when Thibaut Courtois (C 13) controlled it with his hand before it could be an offence.

56

GB at 2017-11-25 19:46:02

#lfc #cfc #livche

No handball as the ball is blasted at the Chelsea defender then another good advatage played in the same minute. Michael Oliver will be very happy with all his calls so far in this game.

54

GB at 2017-11-25 19:44:15

That’s what you can do when your confidence is high and you are confident you have the game in your pocket! Advantage played on an offside when Chelsea only had “possession” and had not cleared the ball. Oliver was prepared to give it as long as he could and everyone could see he was ready to bring the game back for the offside if Chelsea lost the ball. Excellent refereeing!

52

GB at 2017-11-25 19:40:05

Can Referee Oliver GET any closer to these key decisions? I don’t think so!

47

GB at 2017-11-25 19:36:27

Complete accidental tangle then on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area and Oliver right there again in an excellent position to judge NO FOUL.

45

GB at 2017-11-25 19:34:04

There was no managing that one, but once again Liverpool are targeting the same player – sooner or later someone will have to take a yellow for the team!

45

GB at 2017-11-25 19:32:34

Second half underway

Half Time Summary

GB at 2017-11-25 19:28:45

#lfc #cfc #livche

That first half only needed refereeing for 3 or 4 minutes between 29 and 32, when Michael Oliver had a few decisions to make regarding when to open his account as the challenges started to fly in from Liverpool on Hazard. Only the last one could be argued as possible reckless, but the others were definitely designed to break up the flow. Oliver went for the risk and reward strategy and managed the Liverpool’s Joel Matip (L 32) when he manhandles an opponent to the ground. With no yellow shown for that challenge, I was not surprised at all when Chelsea’s Danny Drinkwater (C 6)”put one in” right in front of the Technical Area 3 minutes later, that this did not result in a card either. Had Oliver cautioned the Chelsea player he would have lost all his credibility. As it was, he used his experience, or common-sense, or “feel” for the game, call it what you want (?), to “manage” those little pinch points without it effecting his control. It may have gone another way of course, but you pays you money and you takes your choice, for me I think Oliver got away with that 3 or 3 minutes but needs t be switched on and start with a clean sheet right from the start of the second half.

The only other talking points was an appeal for a penalty at each eand – for me I think the referee was spot on with his interpretation of both of those incidents as well.

This will not be an easy second half, but I expect Oliver to be up for whatever is in store!

Half Time

Liverpool 0 v 0 Chelsea

43

GB at 2017-11-25 19:15:52

Oliver well placed to see no offence IMO with that coming together in the penalty area. The Chelsea play purely took charge of his own space on the field of play which he is entitled to. If anything the actions of the Liverpool player made it look a lot worse than it actually was. The important thing was that Oliver was well placed to sell his decision.

38

GB at 2017-11-25 19:11:05

Drop ball after that clash of heads. The laws make it clear that the referee cannot “manufacture” those restarts, but the sensible referee can also make sure that the players “manufacture” it themselves after an injury! It all comes down to communication!

35

GB at 2017-11-25 19:08:41

#lfc #cfc #livche

I felt that the referee managed the first 30 minutes well, but an official with his experience needs to know when the talking must stop and the expected card is what everyone will accept to maintain his control.

32

GB at 2017-11-25 19:06:28

And that’s what happens! Danny Drinkwater(C 6) is happy to go in with that reckless challenge which really should have resulted in a caution, in the knowledge that Oliver wont bring one out for him as the Home side have just “got away with on”. Oliver will need to really manage the tempo of this one up until half time now otherwise we are going to end up with inconsistency when he results to disciplinary sanctions later in the game.

30

GB at 2017-11-25 19:03:43

And that might have been it! Joel Matip (L 32) very lucky not to be the first yellow for that illegal use of his arms and Oliver has set his tolerance level with that one!

29

GB at 2017-11-25 19:01:34

With that trip on Hazard, followed by another clear foul to break up the Chelsea momentum, the Referee will need to be careful that he does not overdo his lenient attitude too far and over manage when the first clear yellow comes along.

27

GB at 2017-11-25 18:59:39

As Ragnar Kalvan (L 17) gets away with that clear holding offence, that reflects the amount of rope the referee has due to the way this game has been played so far. In another game that may have been a mandatory cation, but that was definitely one which could be managed in the context of this game so far.

24

GB at 2017-11-25 18:56:56

With that “fare” challenge by the Liverpool defender to knock the attacker off the ball in the penalty area, that shows that not every contact has to be a foul, or that the slightest of touches in that area means you have to go down!

22

GB at 2017-11-25 18:53:58

Brilliant movement from the referee then as the ball entered the penalty area, then a slight “jink” to give him as much angle as he could before the attacker and the goalkeeper came together.

19

GB at 2017-11-25 18:51:53

The tactic used by the Chelsea goalkeeper to place the ball in the centre of the goal-area line rather than at either end is something which I have noticed a lot this season. The referee needs to be alert to this and might have to adjust his normal position for goal-kicks as a result.

18

GB at 2017-11-25 18:49:15

The tempo has been high so far even if the goal-match action has been limited. Definitely not a chess match this one with commitment being shown by both side who are both staying within the laws of the game with their challenges.

14

GB at 2017-11-25 18:45:33

Oliver demonstrating his superb fitness as he easily keeps up with the play as it switches from one end to the other.

10

GB at 2017-11-25 18:42:40

Ten minutes gone and the officials will feel happy with the way this one has started. No fireworks yet and no sign of the tension which is sure to rise later in the game. Having hit the ground running the referee has plenty of scope from this point when it comes to his tolerance level when the first strong challenge goes in.

6

GB at 2017-11-25 18:37:37

Excellent “headwork” from AR Simon Bennett then – kept his focus on the player taking the throw-in and did not look across the field of play into no-mans-land!

3

GB at 2017-11-25 18:34:52

As Michael Oliver had to quickly move out of the players way then, watch how long he stays inside the centre circle in this game. This is not an area referee wants to ever drop anchor in. The only time you enter the centre circle is to get to somewhere else!

1

GB at 2017-11-25 18:31:57

Good early direction to the AR by the referee then and good eye contact so the first Throw-in goes right!

Officials

GB at 2017-11-25 18:16:37

 #lfc #cfc #livche

Today’s officials are:

Referee:  Michael Oliver

AR1: Gary Beswick (Technical Area)

AR2: Simon Bennett

4th Official: Craig Pawson

The wait will soon be over for Michael Oliver to find out if he has been successful in his bid to be selected for the Elite Group of UEFA Referees, from which Officials are selected for International Tournaments as well as later stages of the UCL. With the inevitable retirement of Martin Atkinson from that list due to age, the status of English referees abroad would certainly be enhanced with the promotion most people think this referee deserves.

At the start of the season he knew that his destiny was going to be in his own hands as he set out to hit the ground running and keep out of the headlines surrounding Key Match errors in the EPL, but more importantly to really shine in any UEFA appointments he picked up. He has not quite managed to get through all his EPL games without the odd discussion point about his decision making, but all-in-all he has generally managed to keep out of trouble so far, and not been involved in any high profile blemishes to mar his unquestionable ability and potential to go all the way.

With the eyes of the world on him today, this could be his last opportunity to impress the UEFA Referees Committee that he is ready to be given the opportunity to reach the top.

Pre-Match

GB at 2017-11-25 18:09:29

#lfc #cfc #livche

The match of the day pitches 5th vs 3rd as both of these teams struggle to keep pace with the runaway leaders this season.

A disastrous turnaround from 3 nil up away to Seville in the UCL on Tuesday was the worst preparation Liverpool could have hoped for which leaves them with work to do ensure the Knockout stages as they welcome the current champions at Anfield.

Chelsea on the other hand return from the Bak? Olimpiya Stadionu, Baku full of confidence after their comfortable morale boosting 4 nil away win.

Premier League form is what counts today though and the previous 50 meetings between these two teams show identical statistics for both teams with 19 wins a-piece and 12 draws each, so the opportunity is there for one of these top 6 outfits to get their noses in front today.
