Craig Pawson and his team can be pleased with a good performance this afternoon in what was a fairly routine Premier League match for the officials. Craig picks up fouls well and his detection rate is consistent. He moves around the field well, he is eager to keep the game flowing and his man-management tools are effective. In order to develop further, I would like Craig to focus on his awareness in the attacking third, using his fitness to create an even more visible presence. I also felt today that Barnes was very lucky not to have been cautioned. Craig Pawson did the hard work in setting it up but then failed to deliver it in the second half when Barnes had a go at AR Long. Consistency is another area Craig has to tighten up. Lallana was correctly cautioned for dissent by action, yet Brady who did an identical action escaped with no action. These points apart, the overall picture was positive. Both Assistants Long and Ledger had excellent games and their reading of offside was text book. They used the wait and see technique perfectly. With one exception for both Assistants in terms of foul challenges they supported the referee well throughout. Neil Swarbrick had a very quiet afternoon and he did well to position himself out of easy reach from the managers. All in all a good afternoon's work.

Brady is very lucky not to be cautioned there as he slams his hand down in protest at the free-kick awarded by the referee. This was what Lallana was correctly cautioned for and Brady should have received the same punishment.

Liverpool are taking the time with every restart now, Clyne especially is slow restarting at throw-ins. The referee needs to be proactive and speed the players up.

Liverpool sub 27 off, 21 on

AR Simon Long indicates a foul against Ashley Barnes who reacts by pointing and gesturing. He has had enough warnings now and I am surprised the referee has not cautioned him for dissent.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:31:08
Craig Pawson is very eager to keen the game going, there were two fouls on the Burnley player just outside the Liverpool penalty area and although I admire his intentions, I think a free-kick would have been a better decision rather than the advantage.

Burnley sub 21 off, 12 on

The Assistants have done well today, especially in regard to judging offsides for Burnley. They have used the 'wait and see technique' very well as Burnley always seem to have 2 or 3 players in offside positions but they very rarely commit an offence.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:26:21
Very good spot by Craig Pawson as Mee jumps at Mignolet. Correct decision to award a defensive free-kick.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:23:19
#LIVBUR As Burnley press for an equaliser, the tempo of the match is sure to rise. Although Craig Pawson moves around the field well, he has long strides and uses these to good effect to gain ground, he does need to be sharper in the attacking third. At times he is hanging back instead of moving in to the attacking third and especially the penalty area to gain a better view and create a presence.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:21:05
Strong refereeing by Craig Pawson as he correctly cautions Can for carrying the ball away after he had given a Burnley free-kick. This was good alertness by the official and he was correct to issue a yellow card so that these tactics do not escalate.

Ward is complaining about a late challenge there from Lallana who committed a similar challenge in the first half. Despite making little or no contact, the manner of the challenge was at best careless and arguably reckless and in my opinion a free-kick should have been given.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:12:30
Clyne commits a carless challenge on Ward and referee Pawson belatedly and correctly awards a free-kick. The referee did not keep a trailing eye on the incident and he followed the ball. I suspect AR Scott Ledger has given him the foul in the communication kit.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:07:38
I am not sure what Liverpool are complaining about there that was a clear foul on Barnes and referee Pawson was on the spot and called it correctly.
DM at 2017-03-12 18:05:31
That was the first time in the game so far there where Craig Pawson visibly showed hesitation. He was in two minds about whether to play an advantage to Burnley or not, he half signalled one, then put his whistle to his mouth and then played the advantage. In the early stages of the second half it would have been better to have just given the free-kick.

Craig Pawson has controlled this game very well so far. Burnley took an early lead and then tried to break up and slow the game down. Craig has awarded Liverpool twice as many free kicks as he has Burnley for foul challenges and he has read these very well overall. His man-management is strong and Ashley Barnes can be in no doubt that should he commit any further holding offences or protest about any decisions he will be cautioned. The yellow card for Mee was well timed and the referee picked out the right one to caution. Craig has used advantage well and he has been alert and aware throughout. Simon Long and Scott Ledger have performed their duties efficiently and have assisted Craig well. The only query so far has been a missed handball that AR Long could and should have given. This blip apart, the match officials have done well so far, let's hope the second half continues in the same vein.

Craig Pawson is reading the aerial challenges very well and he has spoken to Ashley Barnes about his holding offences and he has set him up for disciplinary action should he continue.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:43:43
Good goal-kick decision by the referee and AR Simon Long. The ball brushed Origi's shoulder before crossing the goal-line.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:42:41
Burnley 10 Ashley Barnes has been spoken to by the referee twice now for his protests. There will not be a third chance and Craig Pawson has made that clear.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:38:37
#LIVBUR Good first caution for Mee who trips a Liverpool player and stops a promising attack. It is important for officials to get the first one right so they can set their line in the sand to speak and Craig has done that.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:36:50
Burnley 6 for unsporting behaviour
DM at 2017-03-12 17:34:12
Simon Long is in the ideal position to make a handball judgement as Liverpool cross the ball and Arfield blocks it. However, he does not penalise the Burnley player yet the ball clearly struck his hands which were away from his body and made the player bigger. I think the officials got that wrong and a free-kick for handball should have been given.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:31:30
#LIVBUR Another very good piece of refereeing by Craig Pawson, he plays advantage for Liverpool after a holding offence by a Burnley player in his own half. At the next available opportunity the referee speaks to the offending player and warns him as to his future conduct. This lets the players know he has not missed the foul.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:27:40
Tactical awareness is something that match officials should take in to account. Burnley offer a lot of pressure at set-pieces, they have a long-throw specialist and at corner-kicks we have seen how they stand on the goalkeeper. This awareness can help the officials plan their position and focus so they are alert to any infringements.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:25:10
Craig Pawson adjudged that the challenge on the halfway line was fair and 'six of one, half a dozen of the other' so to speak. It appeared to me as though the Liverpool player fouled his opponent and a free-kick should have been awarded.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:22:57
Excellent offside flag by Scott Ledger as Barnes is correctly penalised for interfering with play.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:21:41
Milner trips Gray deep in the defensive third. Although Gray had passed the Liverpool player, it was a sensible decision not to caution the player as I do not think he stopped a promising attack.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:19:53
#LIVBUR Law 4 governs the Player's Equipment. It states that undershorts must be the same main colour as the shorts. Barton is wearing white undershorts and blue shorts and this should have been picked up by the Assistant Referee prior to the game when he made his checks.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:17:24
Very good piece of refereeing as Can fouls Boyd on the halfway line. The referee displays confidence as he allows play to continue and then penalises the offence as no advantage accrues.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:14:58
During the opening 15 minutes, a lot of possession has been in the midfield area. The referee has to be careful not to get in the way of play and perhaps sacrifice a little distance in order to gain an angle. The ball is in the air quite a bit and it is important that the referee judges these challenges correctly.
DM at 2017-03-12 17:10:58
Craig Pawson awards a free-kick for a foul on Joey Barton. There was a couple of aerial challenges immediately beforehand, both took place within a couple of metres of the technical area. It may have been better to award the free-kick for the first challenge and not take any unnecessary risks, especially in this area of the field of play.

Burnley 10 Barnes
DM at 2017-03-12 17:06:07
The first corner-kick of the game and Burnley put two players on the goalkeeper. Good to see the referee alert to this before the kick is taken, moving in to show the players he is watching the action.

One of the Law amendments next season will see the player taking the kick-off being allowed to stand in the opposition half. Andre Gray shows the reason why the amendment has been made as he stands at least 2 metres in the Liverpool half.

Craig has refereed 27 matches this season to date and has issued 108 yellow cards and dismissed 4 players. He is assisted by Scott Ledger (one of the Premier League's finest non FIFA Assistant Referees) and Simon Long. Neil Swarbrick completes the team as fourth official and Craig Pawson will be pleased to have an experienced and calm head managing the technical areas this afternoon.
