LIVERPOOL V ASTON VILLA

Commentary By: ANDY MARTIN

FINAL SCORE: 0 - 1

Overall Summary

Liverpool will feel hard done by in this game.
No 14 of Aston Villa should have seen red in the 25th minute following his off the ball kick at 45 of Liverpool – bring in the video ref (see Keith Hackett`s BLOG) in these situations and let us see justice done as Senderos should have been sent off and he arguably went on to be Villa`s defensive king pin and their man of the match. In my BLOG I mentioned that the Assistant Referee Lee Betts on the far touchline would have had a clear view looking in but he incredibly choose not to assist the referee in this clear cut situation?
Villa`s game plan worked a treat for them they came to Anfield scored early on and then went on to frustrate Liverpool by breaking up play movement, time consumption delay tactics which I felt the Referee and his Team failed to really get on top of.
The Referees movement and positioning could have been improved as I have made reference to in my BLOG and a firmer stance in respect of consistency for yellow card offences would have aided his overall match control which at times in the 2nd half threaten to boil over.

As Brad Guzan of Villa saves the ball the referee at 90 + 4 minutes of added time brings play to an end.

AM at 2014-09-13 19:20:24

With regards to the added time I think 6 minutes would have been appropriate the referee on a number of occasions has either shown his watch to all to indicate he is stopping his watch and also there have been yellow cards and subs

AM at 2014-09-13 19:18:26

4 minutes added time

AM at 2014-09-13 19:18:10

The referee gets hit by the ball by being in the wrong position, too close to play

AM at 2014-09-13 19:17:14

With 1 minute of time remaining Villa make a further sub again time delaying tactics changing the captains armband which takes some time to carry out – 11 off 19 on

AM at 2014-09-13 19:15:14

Villa then awarded the throw in with the referee in an unsighted position to judge, maybe a slight delay here and a quick look at his Assistant would have helped

AM at 2014-09-13 19:12:21

Villa Sub 8 off and 24 on

AM at 2014-09-13 19:11:39

As we enter the final 6 minutes and added time the Match Officials will need to be mindful of Villa`s time delaying tactics

AM at 2014-09-13 19:10:08

The Referee is again viewing play from a fairly static viewing position with quick end to end breaks in play by both teams

AM at 2014-09-13 19:08:23

No free kick awarded to Liverpool following a foul close to the touchline a throw in to Liverpool is then awarded and Liverpool go on to hit the post

AM at 2014-09-13 19:05:47

18 of Villa has deliberately pulled down 18 of Liverpool a reverse of an incident just 2 minutes earlier no yellow card is shown by the referee when this would have been the correct outcome to maintain his consistency

AM at 2014-09-13 19:03:06

18 Reckless on 18 of Villa – yellow card the correct outcome for 18 Liverpool

AM at 2014-09-13 19:02:08

Lovren 6 late on Villa goal keeper free kick correctly awarded to Villa

AM at 2014-09-13 19:00:52

Free kick to Villa and the ball is then kicked behind their goal line by a Villa Player in a further attempt to delay / consume time

AM at 2014-09-13 18:58:20

Liverpool sub 45 off (has behaved well in view of the 1st half provocation) 9 on

Villa Sub 28 on 10 off

AM at 2014-09-13 18:55:57

Liverpool continue to attack I just wonder what role the 4th official is playing via the comms system in support of his colleague? ie advice and guidance regarding the Villa tactics?

AM at 2014-09-13 18:54:13

The referee is very much walking at the moment when play develops when a quicker acceleration and movement would assist him in his overall match control

AM at 2014-09-13 18:52:47

10 Villa late on 31 Liverpool. Again 10 Villa was publicly spoken to by the referee in the first half but there is no further action seen in this situation? ie yellow card – 31 of Liverpool now the target for 2 late tackles within minutes

AM at 2014-09-13 18:50:38

Reckless challenge by 21 of Villa results in a yellow card being produced. Players are moving in and a confrontation with players from both sides is occurring. The Referee and his team must up their game as Villa game tactics continue to delay and frustrate Liverpool

AM at 2014-09-13 18:47:56

Liverpool Sub 20 off 31 on – Lallana off – Brendan Rogers is wisely not taking any further risks with him following his yellow card 1st half

AM at 2014-09-13 18:46:12

Throw in awarded to Aston Villa after a delay was the referee not expecting this flag from his Assistant? foul by 8 on 18 awarded by referee

AM at 2014-09-13 18:44:27

The Assistant Referee Bennett nearside has again made a good sprint to confirm that the ball is still in play by the Villa goal line

AM at 2014-09-13 18:43:05

Offside flag from AR Bennett slightly late picked up by the referee? was he not expecting a flag in this situation?

AM at 2014-09-13 18:42:15

Good sprint and movement to the touchline by Assistant Bennett to the goal line. Lee Mason is pointing to his watch as Villa frustrate again but he needs to be clear towards the Villa player who is time wasting, it is setting in and he needs to be more aware of this?

AM at 2014-09-13 18:39:23

Liverpool pressing forward with Villa now having 10 men behind the ball they are happy to just frustrate Liverpool and defend breaking up play when possible

AM at 2014-09-13 18:37:41

Corner kick to Liverpool 14 of Liverpool then plays the ball over the cross bar

AM at 2014-09-13 18:36:43

Liverpool on the attack as we start the 2nd half, the referee will need to get closer to play and tighten things up rather then just trying to let play continue

This would have helped the 25th minute missed incident!

FIFA President Sepp Blatter wants to test the usage of instant replay in games next year. Speaking at a SoccerEX conference he revealed that he wants to test the instant replay in a domestic league and in FIFA U20 World Cup to be played in June 2015 in New Zealand.
“I will bring it to the attention and perhaps we will find a league, a professional or semi-professional league, they will try to do it. It can only be done where there is television coverage of all the matches.
Or in one FIFA competition, we can try in a youth competition to do so, an under-20, like next year, we are in the under-20 in New Zealand. So we could test such challenge calls. Coaches should have the right in the half, twice or once, to challenge a refereeing decision, but only when the game is stopped.
He added: “Then there must be a television monitor, but by the television company and not by another referee. And then the referee and the coach, they will go then to look, and then the referee may change his mind, as is the case in tennis, for instance.”

AM at 2014-09-13 18:32:55

2nd half is underway

AM at 2014-09-13 18:32:22

The referee and his team will need to be aware of the tactics employed by Aston Villa since scoring their goal we have discussed in detail the missed serious foul play by 14 of Villa on 45 of Liverpool, when a red card would have been the correct outcome. look at Keith Hackett`s call for the video referee on his BLOG

AM at 2014-09-13 18:20:01

No free awarded following a late challenge by an Aston Villa player on a Liverpool player close to the half way line. No advantage signal is shown by the referee and play then breaks towards the Aston Villa defending goal and the referee then brings the first half to an end.

AM at 2014-09-13 18:15:51

As we approach the final minute Liverpool`s dominance of the game since Villa scored continues. Corner kick to Villa from a further Liverpool attack. 1 minute added time shown by the 4th Official

AM at 2014-09-13 18:14:16

The Assistant Lee Betts is keeping a good in field view of play as he moves along the touchline, my question here would be from a perfect in field view why did he not spot Senderos 14 of Aston Villa offence and thereby receive a red card in the 25th minute?

AM at 2014-09-13 18:11:19

As we approach half time the match officials will need to be completely focussed and mindful of team and player tactics deployed by Aston Villa

AM at 2014-09-13 18:08:29

Corner kick to Aston Villa – time delaying tactics by Villa in place which the referee will need to be proactive with. Aston Villa have come to Anfield with a game plan which we are seeing develop in the. first 38 minutes

AM at 2014-09-13 18:06:04

21 Villa late on 45 Liverpool again he is currently being targeted by Villa Players. The 4th Official and his Assistants need to be getting this message to the Referee via the comms at least!

AM at 2014-09-13 18:04:03

The Referee then brings back play for a free kick to Liverpool close to half way line there was no advantage in this situation and a quick award of a free kick would have been the preferred option

AM at 2014-09-13 18:02:12

No 14 of Aston Villa is again late on No 45 of Liverpool he is spoken to at length by the referee when a yellow card in this situation would have been the correct outcome? I wonder why the Assistant Referee Lee Betts on the far side some 5 minutes earlier did not view the serious foul play committed by the No 14 of Aston Villa on 45 of Liverpool in the 25th minute and draw the referees attention to this incident as he was looking right across play and in the perfect position to judge this serious incident

AM at 2014-09-13 17:58:16

No penalty to Liverpool No 20 of Liverpool goes down in a challenge with a Aston Villa player having received a  yellow card he needs to be very careful for the rest of this game

AM at 2014-09-13 17:55:46

No. 14 of Aston Villa Senderos has deliberately just kicked No 45 of Liverpool off the ball. This is missed by all the Match Officials. A video review in this situation would have confirmed a red card to the No. 14 of Aston Villa would have been the correct outcome. Why did not any of the Match Officials spot this offence? teamwork call on the video ref to review in the stand to detect this off the ball offence and help the referee

AM at 2014-09-13 17:51:30

Non offside flag from AR Bennett good reading in this situation. I wonder if replays will analyse the award of the corner kick to Aston Villa just prior to the goal?

AM at 2014-09-13 17:49:49

Free kick to Liverpool No 10 of Aston Villa correctly publicly spoken to for his reaction to this decision.

AM at 2014-09-13 17:47:42

Aston Villa from a corner kick have a shot on goal which deflects out for another corner kick to Aston Villa, again from the corner kick grappling is taking place in particular by Lovren of Liverpool. The Referee could and should be more proactive here.

AM at 2014-09-13 17:45:17

When we look again at the replays of the Aston Villa goal did you think that there was any grappling taking place?

AM at 2014-09-13 17:43:14

Free Kick to Aston Villa awarded by the Referee Lee Mason and following this a yellow card is correctly shown to the No 20 Liverpool for a reckless challenge on an opponent

AM at 2014-09-13 17:41:07

Corner kick signal from Assistant Referee Simon Bennett from a tight ball out of play situation on the Liverpool defending goal line – goal is the outcome for Aston Villa scored by No. 11.

AM at 2014-09-13 17:38:49

Assistant Referee Lee Betts helping 23 of Aston Villa by verbally letting the player know where to take the throw in – helpful advice

AM at 2014-09-13 17:37:02

Good effort from Markovic of Liverpool goes just wide

AM at 2014-09-13 17:35:26

Referee awards the first free kick of the game to Aston Villa, good management of the free kick seen, the ball is then played out for a corner kick to Aston Villa

AM at 2014-09-13 17:33:17

Aston Villa attacking early, Assistant near side touchline signals a goal kick from a credible position on the goal line

AM at 2014-09-13 17:30:23

The Referee Lee Mason blows his whistle to signal the kick off

AM at 2014-09-13 17:27:37

Handshakes between Match Officials and Players take place at Anfield as they play the anthem “You will never walk alone”

AM at 2014-09-13 17:26:10

This Evenings Match Officials are Referee Lee Mason, Assisted by Simon Bennett and Lee Betts and the 4th Official is Neil Swarbrick. Lee Mason has so far this season shown 4 yellow cards. We wish them all good luck this evening.
