Liverpool v Arsenal

Liverpool v Arsenal

Commentary By: Rob Harris

FINAL SCORE: 3 - 3

RH at 2016-01-13 23:04:15

One of the most entertaining Premier League games of the season so far and Referee Mike Jones and his team played their part! His judged his involvement level to suit and read play well. Just the one yellow card which was well called and in all fairness to both teams we didn’t see one reckless challenge all night. Mike showed an excellent fitness level running strong throughout in a game that was played at a breath-taking pace on a wet surface where the ball moved quickly, well done!   Whilst I liked Mikes movement in midfield where he didn’t get caught up in play, he does need to work harder to gain final third viewing angles and range. As I said at half time Liverpool’s first goal being a good case in point where he failed to react to Cech’s parry leaving himself looking through too many players as Firmino scored. But overall Mike is refereeing much better this season, he looks more confident and certainly didn’t let himself down tonight! Both Assistants did well, I wasn’t at odds with any of their decisions to night so credit also to Gary Beswick and Andy Garratt. They’ll all be tired tomorrow, after a good nights work!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:46:51

We’ve got more top Premier League action for you this weekend! On Saturday at 12.45pm we’re following in form Tottenham who host Sunderland, an important game at both ends of the league table! Likewise our game at 5.30pm when Aston Villa chase their second win in a week against high flying Leicester City! We’ve got a cracking double bill on Sunday with Liverpool verses Manchester United at 2.05pm followed by Stoke City v Arsenal at 4.15pm. Then on Monday night at 8.00pm can Swansea erase the memory of that Cup defeat at Oxford when they entertain title chasing Arsenal?

RH at 2016-01-13 22:46:03

When you’ve Refereed a game that is as fast as this, or a fast game at the level on which you are officiating, it is important to get the correct amount of rest before your next game, like Mike Jones you should think carefully about when to rest and the type of training sessions you’ll compete in order to recover your fitness levels

RH at 2016-01-13 22:42:59

Gary Beswick spot on there with that offside flag as Moreno attempts to play the ball

RH at 2016-01-13 22:40:38

Sakho rightly penalised for a careless challenge on Giroud

RH at 2016-01-13 22:39:50

With ten minutes to go this is the fastest Premier League game I’ve seen  this season and it shows no signs of slowing down!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:37:48

Liverpool becoming more dominant now, Assistant Gary Beswick the busier of the two Assistants now!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:35:12

Still we’re playing at pace in an end to end game! not a high free kick count this half so far!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:29:17

Clyne needs to be careful here, it was only a careless challenge on Campbell but he’s already on a yellow card, a point that Mike Jones made to him!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:28:12

Its also a good game for both Assistants who’ve shared the play fairly evenly between them which helps concentration levels

RH at 2016-01-13 22:25:49

If this game wasn’t fast enough, the steady rain and wet surface will see the ball pinging around more and making what is a game of pace even quicker! As I said earlier a severe test for any Referees fitness!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:23:33

Mike Jones recognition of offences has been good in this game, he’s picking up all those careless challenges for pushes and trips!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:20:40

This game is really ‘end to end’ at the moment! It would place demands on the fitness of any Referee! wisely Mike Jones is operating a ‘box to box’ patrol path, going wide only in the final third during sustained passages of attacking play, quite right!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:19:16

A penalty appeal against Campbell there, yes the ball did hit his arm but it deflected at speed off his leg, not a penalty for me

RH at 2016-01-13 22:16:23

I can’t see what Can is complaining about, he clearly hauls Campbell to the ground

RH at 2016-01-13 22:13:55

GOAL!Arsenal take the lead for the first time 2-3

RH at 2016-01-13 22:12:11

Yellow CardFirst card of the game and its a good call as Clyne breaks up a promising Arsenal attack with a deliberate handball

RH at 2016-01-13 22:10:52

Its the type of game that will test any Referees fitness, both pace and end to end play!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:08:51

Can can have no complaints with that free kick award!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:07:35

A careless challenge by Giroud picked up, from only a couple of metres away!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:05:55

As Campbell shot on goal there the Referee was too far away, he stopped moving in on goal and settled for a viewing range that was not close enough being too far outside the penalty area, come on Mike get your eye in!

RH at 2016-01-13 22:03:43

The second half has started!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:56:29

This the first time I’ve seen Mike Jones Referee this season and I have to say that there is an obvious improvement in his game having seen him in action during a very entertaining opening first half. He is Refereeing with more confidence and has judged his involvement level well with just one exception, that being his decision to restart play with a drop ball, just give the free kick Mike and draw less attention on yourself. Having said that the Referee has missed nothing of any consequence so far. The only part of his game that needs attention being his final third positioning and movement, a case in point being Liverpool’s first goal where he failed to react to Cech’s parry and left himself looking through too many players as Firmino scored, Both Assistants look sharp and are on their game,  in many respects a cracking half’s entertainment!

a Minimum of 3 minutes added time

RH at 2016-01-13 21:46:30

A drop ball there following a tangle between Ozil and Lalllan, the Referee would have drawn less attention on himself if had given Arsenal a free kick for the contact between the tow players where Lallana appeared to shove the Arsenal player

RH at 2016-01-13 21:42:52

Gary Beswick very alert there to flag that Arsenal offside just inside the Liverpool half!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:40:16

My only observation on Mike Jones game so far is that he needs to close in a little more in the attacking third, its been particularly noticeable when Liverpool attack that he settles for a viewing position some 4/5 metres outside the penalty area, he also doesn’t react quickly enough to penalty area knock on’s where he should be adjusting his position to obtain the best viewing range/position

RH at 2016-01-13 21:36:07

Arsenal sensing that Liverpool keeper Mignolet is weak on corners, that could bring more pressure on him at set pieces, the Referee will need to be aware of that

RH at 2016-01-13 21:32:48

Assistant Gary Beswick spot on to confirm that Campbell got the last touch for that Liverpool goal kick

RH at 2016-01-13 21:31:28

Mike Jones has judged his involvement level well so far, he’s picking up the careless challenges and has played a couple of decent midfield advantages to Liverpool

RH at 2016-01-13 21:29:36

Wow what a fantastic opening half hour!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:27:08

A superb non offside flag by Gary Beswick as Ramsey was in on goal in the build up to the corner that led to that goal!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:25:55

GOAL!Giroud levels again for Arsenal 2-2

RH at 2016-01-13 21:24:33

Liverpool are already pressing high in this game, showing enormous energy, The Referee and the active Assistant in the Arsenal half will have remain focussed, there are times when match officials take a mental break in order to refocus for the next phase of play, however when a team presses high the opportunities for this are reduced!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:22:17

Great offside call from Andy Garratt as Moreno mistimed his run

RH at 2016-01-13 21:20:06

GOAL!A wonder strike from Firmino! 2-1 Liverpool

RH at 2016-01-13 21:18:28

Firmino rightly pulled up for that careless challenge!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:16:38

Giroud picks up a head injury from Sakho in the build up to that goal, nothing malicious though

RH at 2016-01-13 21:15:10

GOAL!Ramsey gets Arsenal level!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:13:08

Looking at a replay of that goal, as the ball moved across the penalty area the Referee remained fairly static, there were a lot of players between the Referee and the ball, I just wonder how good a view the Referee had of that strike?

RH at 2016-01-13 21:10:53

GOAL!Firmino opens the scoring for Liverpool

RH at 2016-01-13 21:08:47

This time Ibe goes to ground under pressure from a defender but again self inflicted, no penalty

RH at 2016-01-13 21:07:19

Lallana running into Mertesacker and going to ground, no penalty!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:05:43

This is a big match for Referee Mike Jones, a sign that he has raised his game this season!

RH at 2016-01-13 21:04:08

Walcott right flagged offside by Gary Beswick

RH at 2016-01-13 21:02:13

Early free kicks to both sides for careless challenges

RH at 2016-01-13 21:01:25

If you are watching the game on TV, Assistant Andy Garratt is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Gary Beswick is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2016-01-13 21:00:42

Our match Referee Mike Jones gets us underway!

RH at 2016-01-13 20:57:01

Today’s Match Referee is Mike Jones. His Assistant Referees are Gary Beswick and Andy Garratt, The Fourth Official is Bobby Madley

RH at 2016-01-13 20:50:48

This fixture has a rich history, it’s one of those stand out fixtures! Liverpool always seem capable of upsetting the form book these days, which makes for an exciting evening as title contenders Arsenal are on Merseyside!
