#LEITOT In conclusion, I wish to compare this weeks performances of Lee Mason and Michael Oliver.  The former, disappointingly, looked unsure and uncomfortable; compare and contrast to his performance with this evening’s master-class by Michael Oliver.  This highlight’s the lack of strength in depth in the Select Group Referees, something which needs addressing by the PGMO.

In summary, so much to admire about Michael Oliver’s  refereeing – his performance and level of match control were ‘text-book’.  Here’s the key plus points:

  • Fitness, positioning, movement – an object lesson in how use his outstanding athletic ability with purposeful movement and be in the optimum decision making positions throughout the 90+ minutes.

  • Reading the game – the ability to anticipate play and to be ‘on the move’ as plays develop.

  • His recognition of penal offences was of a very high standard throughout; I cannot recall one occurrence of an obviously incorrect call.

  • What is often forgotten post-match is the contribution of the Assistant Referees. Jake Collin and Con Hatzidakis both gave commendable displays to back up Michael Oliver and their performances were a major plus.

Full Time Summary of a classy performance by Michael Oliver to follow ……

AH at 2017-05-18 21:35:28

GOAL! Would you believe it – a 4th for the master poacher, his 26th PL goal of the season – the travelling fans chant “we want 7!”

AH at 2017-05-18 21:33:05

GOAL! Kane completes a fine evening with his 3rd goal of the game, Game set and match,

AH at 2017-05-18 21:29:53

Standards maintained as Con Hatzidakis correctly disallows Janssen’s “goal”, his positioning made the decision somewhat routine for the Assistant Referee.

AH at 2017-05-18 21:26:59

Just 5 minutes remaining of regulation time, time for the refereeing team to refocus and see the game home to a safe and successful conclusion.

AH at 2017-05-18 21:24:06

Yellow CardSimpson reckless, Oliver consistent !

AH at 2017-05-18 21:21:48

Yellow CardDemaria Gray’ reckless challenge has Michael Oliver once again reaching for the yellow card.  Once again, no complaints from the offender as the referee continues his high level of consistency.

AH at 2017-05-18 21:17:32

The only issue here is that Leicester’s frustration levels may increase and this could result in some ill discipline, just something for the refereeing team to be aware of in the final 15 minutes.

AH at 2017-05-18 21:14:59

GOAL! 2 or Son, 2 for Kane, Spurs completely dominant and they are a pleasure to watch

AH at 2017-05-18 21:10:01

Yellow CardYellow CardCommendable refereeing, yet again, from Michael Oliver as he asserts his authority with 2 cautions in quick succession.  Neither Sissoko or Arbighton can have any complaints as their challenges were cynical.

AH at 2017-05-18 21:07:23

GOAL! Harry Kane, once again right place / right time, finishes from close range and the 2-goal lead is restored.  Spurs showing why they are such a force this season.

AH at 2017-05-18 21:03:47

GOAL! Well, game on, young full-back Ben Chilwell shows composure above his years by coolly finishing from inside the penalty area – it’s been a good spell for Leicester City

AH at 2017-05-18 20:57:19

This is a much more even game as Spurs ride the Foxes roller-coaster start to, so far, maintain there 2 goal lead

AH at 2017-05-18 20:51:04

The home side have started the 2nd half well – time for the refereeing team to tune back into the game and to reproduce the high standards of the first half.

AH at 2017-05-18 20:46:38

As the second half gets underway, for you young aspiring referees tuning in to watch the game, just keep an eye on Michael’s movement around the field of play and watch how he always seems to be well positioned through a combination of a high level of fitness and an uncanny ability to read the game.

Half Time Michael Oliver’s half-time whistle brings welcome relief to the Home Team – back to the drawing board for Craig Shakespeare – his team’s performance has been much a do about nothing …

AH at 2017-05-18 20:30:36

1 additional minute – the Foxes need to regroup and work out a way to stay in the game

AH at 2017-05-18 20:27:35

#LEITOT.  Great to see Assistant Jake Collin enjoying a light-hearted moment with Deli Alli.  Why not, they are both having great games so far.

AH at 2017-05-18 20:26:05

#LEITOT.  5 minutes to go in the first-half and we are being treated to 2 master-classes, one by Spurs who are dominating proceedings, the other by Michael Oliver whose judgement and match control cannot be faulted.

AH at 2017-05-18 20:23:32

GOAL! Deli Alli shows his class with a precise through ball, Son Heung-Min finishes with confidence, Tottenham have a 2-goal lead.

AH at 2017-05-18 20:21:07

#LEITOT Michael Oliver is taking the opportunity to allow the game to flow, which is governed by 2 factors (a) the excellent level of player discipline and (b) the accuracy of the referee’s decisions – these go hand-in-hand

AH at 2017-05-18 20:16:50

How do you think Michael Oliver and his team are doing so far, let us know by tweeting us @youaretheref

AH at 2017-05-18 20:15:34

#LEITOT The referee’s first major call of the evening and the judgement is spot-on.  Alderweireld challenges Vardy in the penalty area, both tumble to the ground, play-on is the correct decision.

AH at 2017-05-18 20:12:44

GOAL! #LEITOT Harry Kane opens the scoring (no surprise there) with a well taken goal.  This time the honourable mention goes to Con Hatzidakis for the accuracy of his non-offside decision – the Assistant Referees are having a great evening so far.

AH at 2017-05-18 20:04:13

This is not an untypical Premiership game – hard, fast, committed yet skillful, a good test for the match officials, no concerns as the clock ticks past the 20-minute mark ….

AH at 2017-05-18 20:00:02

#LEITOT Have you also noticed how each and every decision is given from a credible position, leading to accuracy and therefore gaining the respect of the players ….

AH at 2017-05-18 19:55:30

#LEITOT A second great call in quick succession by Jake Collin, this time as he allows Jamie Vardy to proceed on goal and get his shot away – the Leicester striker was just on-side and the decision was commendable.

AH at 2017-05-18 19:51:35

No particular pattern established to the game as yet. The referee is always happier when the game ‘settles down’ as the patterns of play allow him to read the game and anticipate play to a greater degree.

AH at 2017-05-18 19:48:38

Good first call by Jake Collin as Vardy strays marginally offside

AH at 2017-05-18 19:45:04

Here we go – good luck to the refereeing team – let’s hope the ball runs kindly for you

Michael features on our latest website articles, where Keith Hackett illustrates how the over-reliance on a handful of Premier League referees shows a lack of depth in the quality of Select Group – visit https://you-are-the-ref.com/reliance-michael-oliver-shows-lack-quality-among-premier-league-referees/ for details, with the article also appearing in the Daily Telegraph today.

AH at 2017-05-18 19:32:10

Michael Oliver takes charge this evening, once again supported by Jake Collin and Con Hatzidakis, which is the same on the field team who officiated at the West Brom v Chelsea fixture last Friday. Let’s hope the game goes as well for them as it did last week. Neil Swarbrick has the 4th official duties.

AH at 2017-05-18 19:29:36

#LEITOT Welcome to the King Power Stadium for the penultimate Premier League game for Leicester City and Spurs this season.  On paper, nothing to play for, but in refereeing terms, that is not always the case, as illustrated with our Monday night RefCam coverage of Chelsea v Watford, where Lee Mason was severely tested.
