Leicester City v Stoke City

S.M. at 2018-02-24 15:35:34

SUMMARY:   A battling performance from Stoke but, apart from the last 15 minutes, a scrappy one from Leicester despite having a large number of corner kicks.  Michael Oliver had a reasonable but not an exceptional game. His movement about the pitch was very good and this enabled him to always be in credible positions to judge challenges. However, early cautions set a tolerance level which was not maintained throughout. The challenge by Allen, who went into  Iheanacho with studs into his opponent, was a cautionable offence but was not punished even with a free-kick and yet when the same player pulled his opponent back he was rightly cautioned. In both instances the Referee was well positioned to view the incidents hence the perception is that a “shirt pull” will get a card but making contact with an opponent with studs is ok. Disappointing from Michael Oliver on that one and we should expect better from a Referee of his standard.                 Thanks for being with me today and don’t forget further RefCam games today at 17.30 (Watford v Everton) and tomorrow at12 noon ( Crystal Palace v Spurs) and 16.30 (Arsenal v Manchester City).

Adam pulls back Iheanacho and rightly gets Yellow Card

S.M. at 2018-02-24 15:07:57

More Leicester pressure and another corner kick.  The Referee deals well with the quick Stoke break.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 15:05:33

Adam gets away with a foul on Iheanacho on the edge of the penalty area.  Referee well positioned but AR1 also had a good view. Good advantage applied to Leicester in next phase of play.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 15:02:57

Foul by Adam on Morgan. Should have been a yellow card in view of what was given in the first half.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 15:01:15

Stoke substitution    Adam for Martins Indi

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:59:01

Another free-kick to Leicester.   Michael Oliver always appears very comfortable in his movement about the pitch.  GOAL! for Leicester. OG by Butland.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:51:37

Stoke substitution     Campbell for Diouf.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:49:22

Yet another free-kick awarded to Leicester for a minor offence. Again the Referee well positioned.                                                                                                            Leicester substitutions Diamate for Gray and Iheanacho for Simpson.

Another free-kick to Leicester. Another late challenge by Allen. Living dangerously already being on a yellow card.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:39:36

First offside offence correctly indicated by AR2.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:39:03

Foul by Shaqiri on Albrighton. Poor advantage applied by the Referee but sensibly brought back for the free-kick eventually.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:36:07

Foul By Diouf penalised.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:28:34

First Half Summary:  Despite the home team having the majority of possession and accumulating a large number of corner kicks, the visitors snatched the lead in the closing minutes of the half. From a Refereeing point of view Michael Oliver has always been very well positioned close to play when having to make judgements and generally offences have been correctly recognised and dealt with accordingly. However, his early caution  of Allen instead of managing the situation has set a tolerance level and hence we have already seen two further cautions to ensure a consistent approach to control is achieved. Early cautions reduce a Referees capacity to manage situations of a a similar nature as the game unfolds and this then relies on players co-operation to prevent a plethora of disciplinary action. Hopefully further cards will not be necessay during the second half but we will see.

Half Time

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:13:52

GOAL! by Shaqiri brings first goal.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:12:28

Silly foul by James on Allen correctly penalised. Silly push by Bauer penalised.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:05:09

The Referee stops play following accidental clash between Ndidi and Nidaye. Play correctly restarted with a drop ball, although this was “managed” with no Stoke player contesting it.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 14:00:08

Minor offence by Vardy correctly penalised and then similarly one by Ndidi in next phase of play.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:58:39

Referee uses “quiet Word” man-management with Maguire and Martins Indi prior to corner kick following silly pushing and holding.  Sensible approach to try to prevent more of the same at corners and attacking free-kicks.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:54:46

A goog flag by AR1 to indicaate foul by Shaqiri on Albrighton. Reckless foul by Diouf on Mahrez leads to Yellow Cardfor Diouf. The tolerance level has now been clearly set and if players keep making such challenges we will expect more.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:51:10

Clumsy foul on Shaqiri correctly penalised. Fouls on Shaqiri stacking up. The Referee needs to be aware of this.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:48:57

Challenge by James on Diouf not penalised. The Leicester player perhaps fortunate to escape with this one. Alrbrghton fouls Shaqiri and rightly receives Yellow Card. Once again the Referee right on the spot.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:45:10

Yellow Cardfor Allen following reckless challenge. As I said high credibility achieved from the Referees positioning.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:40:36

Foul by Allen correctly penalised. Referee in excellent position within 1m of the offence which ensures high credibility of decision.  Foul by Maguire on Shaqiri . Once again the Referee well positioned to judge and award the free kick.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:37:35

First free-kick goes to Stoke for a clumsy challenge on Diouf. The Referee takes up a position outside of the penalty area to once again ensure he gets a clear view of challenges inside the goal area.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:33:28

Three Leicester corners in succession as the hosts start on the front foot. The Referee well positioned at the edge of the penalty area to get a clear view of goalmouth action.

S.M. at 2018-02-24 13:30:45

Leicester get the game underway in lovely sunshine.
