In what was a quiet first half up until just before half time when Vardy committed a reckless challenge on his opponent, this challenge which was missed by MO then saw a very different 2nd half with feelings still running high from this challenge. MO then had to use disciplinary sanctions to then bring the game and tempo back down. Michael’s recognition of foul / non foul was otherwise overall of a good standard, his positioning and movement was very good.

We discussed the 31st minute handball incident – Simpson handball and law 12 says that handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take into account the following:

the movement of hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)

that was the key judgement that MO had to make and he decided no penalty kick to Saints.

Both Assistant Referees contributed their part very well with all offside judgements correct and with good positioning and signal technique in evidence. Ball out of play judgements looked to be correct with a number of gk and ck judgements to be made.

Many thanks for your company this afternoon, stay with us for Manchester United v Everton.

S. fk correct against Mane although a slight delay in the award this is correct despite L .players protests. Dissent seems as area to be tolerated a lot more these days by referees and can you remember the last time you saw a player shown the yellow card for dissent?

Holding and pulling by Vardy and Van Dijk

AM at 2016-04-03 14:44:08

This needs to be detected early and fk`s awarded because if it does develop then we could see further action being taken from our referee

52

AM at 2016-04-03 14:41:41

Simpson late on TADIC the referee is now really going to have to up his game and concentration levels as the game has gone in tempo as we discussed at half time

Yellow Card

49

AM at 2016-04-03 14:38:56

46

AM at 2016-04-03 14:36:42

Yellow CardWanyama goes into the referees notebook very early for that challenge on Vardy as feelings still run high from the Vardy challenge just before half time – not an obvious goal scoring opportunity for Vardy here.

Half time thoughts

AM at 2016-04-03 14:31:37

Michael Oliver has remained well in control of this game right through to just before half time when there was a flashpoint when Vardy has committed a reckless challenge on his opponent and this has been missed by the referee and may well feature early in the 2nd half as Saints players feel aggrieved that this decision was not detected by MO.

Key match Decision – 31st minute no penalty to S. as Mane rounds the L. gk and the ball then hits the arm of Simpson who in his running motion has blocked the ball with his arm. Was this a deliberate act? and should a penalty kick of been awarded to Saints? MO had a great view and position to say no but what did you think?

What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

MO has judged foul / non /foul well his movement and position has been very good.

Both Assistants have supported MO well and offside judgements and positioning have been key and effective by both. Bring on the 2nd half this could be feisty for reasons as we have discussed.

45

AM at 2016-04-03 14:22:07

Vardy has committed a reckless challenge on Clasie just before half time and whilst he claims he got the ball there was a follow through with a foot up which the Saints players are unhappy with. I think Vardy could have easily received a yellow card here as it was reckless. He is spoken to by MO. Right on half time. I don’t think we have heard the end of this challenge. Officials will need to be mindful of this at half time. Did MO have the best view / position to judge?

FK to S.

AM at 2016-04-03 14:16:37

FK correctly awarded against Okazaki who waves his arms around for some reason?

42

AM at 2016-04-03 14:14:44

Good spot by MO as the ball deflects off Vardy and out of play for a gk to S.

AM at 2016-04-03 14:13:23

As we enter the final 5 minutes and additional time it is important for all match officials to not let the good work disappear as we enter the half time break. Concentration and focus key.

37

AM at 2016-04-03 14:10:01

GOAL!

Morgan scores a brilliant goal from a header from a Fuchs cross

1-0

36

AM at 2016-04-03 14:08:07

Clasie strong in his challenge on Mahrez looked to be a fair challenge and no fk is awarded by MO correctly in my opinion

34

AM at 2016-04-03 14:06:59

What an effort from Fonte as Schmeichel tips the ball over the bar and MO uses his whistle to indicate a ck to S.

What a chance that was for The Saints

AM at 2016-04-03 14:05:05

31

AM at 2016-04-03 14:04:29

Mane breaks clear and having rounded the keeper Mane hits the ball that then hits Simpson on the arm which is inwards and is towards his body

Offside against Cedric

AM at 2016-04-03 14:02:20

AH correctly judges this offside

Pelle takes a knee in the lower back area

AM at 2016-04-03 14:01:24

MO awards a fk to S. as we reach the half hour mark.

GB on the far touchline

AM at 2016-04-03 14:00:02

Keep an eye on his positioning for offside – he remains in the perfect position in line with the 2nd rearmost defender.

26

AM at 2016-04-03 13:58:51

FK to .L. allowed to be taken quickly by MO

23

AM at 2016-04-03 13:57:06

No handball against Mane – again great position from MO to view. Players are also helping matters by just wanting to get on with the game. MO is allowing this to happen by just intervening only when absolutely necessary.

21

AM at 2016-04-03 13:53:46

Two cases there of no free kicks by MO. Great position and view to judge

20

AM at 2016-04-03 13:52:23

Pelle not offside correct judgement from AH who is in line with 2nd rear most defender

19

AM at 2016-04-03 13:51:21

Vardy offside coming back into the active area – correctly awarded by GB.

18

AM at 2016-04-03 13:50:32

S. appeal for handball not given maybe on MO blindside by Vardy

17

AM at 2016-04-03 13:49:15

CK to L. sees MO. making good movement and running well into the S. penalty area to make that judgement

Foul throw in by S.

AM at 2016-04-03 13:47:57

Correctly judged and is now to be taken by L.

14

AM at 2016-04-03 13:46:34

Good advantage played by MO for S. Correct advantage signal and is a good judgement.

11

AM at 2016-04-03 13:43:36

L. ck a good detection by GB as confirmed by replay as the ball goes out of play for a further L. ck

9

AM at 2016-04-03 13:42:31

Throw in to S. Adrian Holmes will be glad to get that first decision under his belt as this is his 14th appearance on the line in the Premier League today and a big appointment for him.

8

AM at 2016-04-03 13:40:35

L. fk Mane careless in that challenge with Morgan. MO awards from a close position and view

6

AM at 2016-04-03 13:38:53

Good non offside flag from GB against L. Did you notice GB right in line 2nd rearmost defender to make that correct judgement

4

AM at 2016-04-03 13:36:13

Good sharp and positive flag signal for a throw in to L. from GB.

2

AM at 2016-04-03 13:34:32

MO takes up a good position and view at that L. ck

2

AM at 2016-04-03 13:33:50

L. fk and from it comes a L. ck

AM at 2016-04-03 13:32:59

Stripes across the field of play will certainly help the Assistants in their offside judgements

Michael Oliver - Todays Referee

AM at 2016-04-03 13:24:56

Michael Oliver should enjoy this one. Whilst he has come in for some criticism in recent weeks for not having the bravery or courage to make that big key match decision when it needs to be made. Although he has great potential and undoubted talent he needs to ensure that these big key match decisions are awarded and this is a key area that we will focus upon this afternoon.

A pressure cooker atmosphere is something the young official thrives on and it would be a big surprise to see him not handling the big occasion today.

Back to today at Leicester City

AM at 2016-04-03 13:16:12

They won’t stay there. It’s a flash in the pan. They can’t do it. Leicester have heard it all before and guess what? The Foxes are still sat proudly at the top of the Premier League tree.

The most wins in the division, the least amount of losses. Only two goals behind the highest scorers in the league. The table doesn’t lie.

Perhaps the insouciance of everyone else has allowed Claudio Ranieri’s side to play without pressure. With a five point cushion ahead of the weekend action, they’re still able to relax to some degree, and that could be the precise reason why Jamie Vardy et al continue to confound the doubters.

Southampton have aspirations of their own and should Manchester United slip up against Everton the Saints can leapfrog United into sixth in the table. The carrot of European football will ensure that the visitors don’t arrive just to make up the numbers and I feel that a shock could be on the cards today.
