So, the Leicester goal has caused some debate in terms of the possibility of Vardy being offside here at You Are The Ref towers. Who are we to disagree with Jamie Carragher who has offered the opinion on the host broadcaster channel that he was offside, but no less a figure than Mark Halsey @RefereeHalsey shares my opinion that the deflection off the Newcastle defender makes the debate re Vardy’s position irrelevant as the play becomes ‘second phase’. Well done to Assistant Simon Bennett for making the correct call.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:54:00
Well – that game was well controlled and was an object lesson in calm and considered match control, no surprises. Decisions given with authority – well done to Craig and his team.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:51:29
The Foxes march on, a 1-0 win …….
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:47:56
This is always a challenge with the ball in the corner – just keep focused Craig …
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:46:06
Probably 4 minutes additional time to come ?
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:44:11
Here’s a question for you – who is more composed, Leicester City’s Kante or the referee Craig Pawson – it’s a close run thing ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:41:21
Another good call from the referee as he turns away a second penalty appeal – no intent to handle the ball by Wes Morgan.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:37:19
The first minor blip as Referee and Assistant disagree, but Craig Pawson was right to overrule Simon Bennett on this occasion.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:34:15
The accuracy of the penal offence decisions continues ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:30:36
All 3 match officials look like calmness personified ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:26:53
Great awareness by Craig Pawson as he curbs some “afters” in the goal-area. He did well to calm the players and restart the game with no histrionics.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:24:49
3/4 of the game completed, time for the match officials to refocus and see the match safely concluded – they will be communicating down the mikes, encouraging each other ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:19:49
Better movement this time by Craig Pawson, running laterally across the field of play to detect the ball was deflected for a corner-kick.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:16:56
30 minutes to go and the game remains very tactical, only 7 penal offences so far, I expect that number to increase as the game progresses.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:13:32
A change in personal for Newcastle will give both the Leicester defence and the referee a different focus – subs often change games as Townsend enters the fray.
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:10:38
Clever play by Vardy “draws the foul” in basketball terms and gives the Home Team a free-kick – the referee was correct with his decision
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:05:12
The match officials first decision on the second half in spot on, Mahrez wins a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area
RCT at 2016-03-14 22:02:21
So, here’s a key 10 minutes for all 3 teams on the field of play, containment for Leicester, attacking endeavor for Newcastle, an emphasis on ‘focus’ for the team of match officials.

Some fascinating talking points from the world of football this week, including the ‘triple jeopardy’ law change and the use of technology in our beloved game. Whilst waiting for the game to restart, why not visit our website and read our thoughts at http://you-are-the-ref.com/new-ifab-law-creating-confusion-instead-of-clarity/
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:49:40
This observer would like to see a slight adjustment to the referee’s position as attacks develop in the final third in the referee’s “quarter”, but that apart, no concerns at all.
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:48:32
Half-time, and an object lesson in not being involved unless you have to. The match officials have done well, the one major call, half a penalty appeal by Jamie Vardy in the opening stages, was correctly turned away.
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:44:49
As we appraoch half-time, keep your thoughts on the game so far coming to us by tweeting us @youartheref
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:42:10
Do you think Casper Schmeichel goes to “angry classes” in his spare time, every attack with Newcastle develop seems to cause him concern and leads to a telling off for one of his defenders – does he remind you of a certain Manchester custodian by any chance ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:39:17
This is a not untypical Premiership encounter – just one shot on goal so far – one goal. Makes the big decision making even more important
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:34:59
Once again the referee has been caught in the “inside left” channel as Newcastle develop an attack this time – there was no problem with his movement once play moved into the penalty area – but could a minor adjustment and then some anticipation lead to an overall better positional sense?
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:28:25
There’s the key moment as predicted which will increase the temperature of the game, time for the match officials to keep a tight rein on proceedings for 5-10 minutes….
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:26:46
Crackerjack – Okazaki on his bike with a spectacular overhead kick gives City the lead …
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:25:25
Did you notice Craig Pawson in Danny Drinkwater’s “space” as that play developed – Craig did not know whether to go left or right to avoid him. In my opinion he just needs to drop 5 meters and then move forward as required ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:21:47
Just 3 penal offences inside the first 20 minutes, I sense a key moment in the game is imminent to set the game alive ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:19:53
I’d love to get some Pro-Zone stats on Danny Drinkwater, how much ground does that guy cover in a game I wonder ….. he’s got to be in contention for a Euro 16 England squad
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:15:48
First big call for Craig Pawson, a confident “no” as Vardy tumbles in the penalty area, no great complaints from the Leicester front man.
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:11:33
That was a good prolonged sprint through the centre-circle as the Foxes developed a fast right to left break
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:10:01
Post-match we referenced Craig Pawson’s positional play – let’e keep a close eye on his movement as the game develops.
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:08:31
The game still feels very ‘tense’, focus remains key for the match officials until the game settles down
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:05:13
Nothing to concern the match officials so far, they will be hoping it stays that way. Newcastle making the early running so far ….
RCT at 2016-03-14 21:01:00
Here we go – hold on to your hat’s ……. this is going to be fun …..
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:59:20
Craig Pawson will be supported this evening by the experienced of Darren Cann and Steve Bennett. Mike Jones, who has recently shown a marked improvement in his form, has the 4th official duties.
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:58:09
There is an opinion amongst colleagues here at You Are The Ref that Craig doesn’t make the most of his high fitness levels (when compared to say Mark Clattenburg), we shall be monitoring this closely during the game.
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:57:14
Interestingly, the PGMO have appointed Craig Pawson to this game, this has to be the most severe test so far of the Sheffield official’s blossoming talent – we wish him well.

No surprise at all that Southampton have lodged an appeal against Sadio Mane’s red card at Stoke on Saturday, I’m sorry Lee Mason, but once again you have not performed to the expected level of a Premiership referee.
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:49:34
What did you think if Gabriel’s tackle ? Payet diving ? Barry Bannan’s red card – tweet us and let us know ……..
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:47:59
Some great twitter activity over the last few days – keep them coming to us @youaretheref – interesting contributions from @mahmood_rash @rowsley_45 and others
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:42:04
Wow – can’t wait for this one, it’s vital for both teams, Benitezz return to the Premiership added an extra twist to the tie that is already full of talking points. If ever both teams needed all 3 points, this is it.
RCT at 2016-03-14 20:39:26
Welcome to the King Power Stadium for this key Premiership fixture between Leicester City and Newcastle United.
