A 0-0 draw with only one incident from a Refereeing perspective that could have changed the result, so lets deal with that first. Yes its fair to say that Inler got no contact on the ball, its also fair to say that the Referee didn’t have a good view of the challenge, so the call fell on Assistant Andy Garratt. he didn’t react, I can understand that, this was a very marginal call and one that if repeated could in future fall to a fifth official in a booth. To be honest such was the level of fine judgement called that it was difficult to pick up with the naked eye. But at the end of the day the challenge came in with no contact on the ball so that’s a penalty in my view. Having said that Aguero didn’t do himself any favours by exaggerating his fall.

As for the Referees performance it was something of a mixed bag, all of the cautions were sound, control was never lost and it was all handshakes at the end, and it all probability the Match Officials won’t be the talking point. I’m sure you sense a ‘But’ here and there is. I felt Craig Pawson’s performance lacked a certain degree of urgency and momentum, yes Craig is controlled and unflustered but he doesn’t posses the impact that Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have, yes I know that they have been around at this level longer, but here I feel is something for Craig to aim at and work on. Take for example Leicester’s tactic of pressing high, Craig did not squeeze play when Jamie Vardy challenged the City defenders, I noted that early in the game.   So it came as no surprise when late in the game when Vardy drew a caution for such a challenge with the Referee too far away to offer impact. I also feel that he needs to work on his game in midfield to reduce his tendency to be looking over his shoulder with a restricted view of play. He should watch his colleagues Mark Clattenburg and Anthony Taylor who always turn in and back off to maintain a 180 degree view of play. Marc Perry ran a good line, he looked sharp and got his calls right, Andy Garratt got a couple of calls wrong when well paced, he missed the first half Vardy offside and even notwithstanding that he didn’t intervene at the Aguero penalty incident should have given a corner shortly after. All in all plenty to think about after this game

Summary to follow

RH at 2015-12-29 22:35:02

Also during that Vardy/Sagna incident stoppage, Huth accidentally caught Otamendi who laughably went to ground!

RH at 2015-12-29 22:33:35

Yellow CardDe Bruyne kicks up a yellow card for delaying the restart of play

RH at 2015-12-29 22:32:59

Leicester still pressing high, the Referee is 20 metres away and not closing fast, but then has to award a free kick and Yellow Cardto Sagna, the Referee should have been nearer to that incident

There’s so much to look forward to on Refcam, tomorrow night at 7.45 Liverpool who seem capable of any result, travel to Sunderland who simply have to win! We complete the weekend games with some Merseyside action when Everton face top four contenders Tottenham at 4.00

RH at 2015-12-29 22:26:03

As Man City mounted that last attack the Referee turns to look over his shoulder with a restricted view of play, better to do a Clattenburg and back off keeping a 180 degree view of play

RH at 2015-12-29 22:23:06

Yellow CardAlbrighton earns a caution as he goes high and arrives too late on Sagna!

RH at 2015-12-29 22:19:30

Good call by Marc Perry as Ulloa is flagged offside as he pursued the ball following his offside position from the free kick!

RH at 2015-12-29 22:18:10

Yellow CardMangala rightly earns the second caution of the game following a reckless challenge on Ulloa

RH at 2015-12-29 22:17:13

Its been a fast moving end to end game tonight, the three active match officials will know they have been in a game!

at 2015-12-29 22:15:07

Good to see Assistant Marc Perry keeping both competing players in view as he signalled that last throw in

at 2015-12-29 22:11:14

Just a couple of point to reflect on 1. I feel that any penalty call on the Aguero/Inler challenge should have come from the Assistant and not the Referee and 2. Why did the Referee allow play to continue towards the touch line following Kolarov’s reckless charge on Mahrez?

at 2015-12-29 22:08:52

Yellow CardKoloarov reckless on Mahrez, the Referee brings play back to show yellow!

at 2015-12-29 22:07:03

Aguero goes to ground following a challenge from Inler, TV replays show that the Leicester player didn’t get contact on the ball, Assistant Andy Garratt had the best view, no penalty given but there were good grounds to have awarded a spot kick! I

at 2015-12-29 22:03:39

With an hour on the clock I find myself comparing Craig Pawson to the likes of Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor the other young hopeful FIFA Referees, I have to say that on tonight’s offering Craig’s game lacks the momentum and energy that the other two have, he looks a little too relaxed in his movement and positioning, he got great potential but its clearly work in progress!

at 2015-12-29 21:59:32

Assistant Marc Perry showing how to deal with a wide left offside call!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:58:16

Aguero appeals for a penalty as the ball catches Simpson who was going to ground, no penalty for me, would have been extremely harsh!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:54:44

Its a feature of the Referees performance that as crosses come into the penalty area that he is positioned about five yards outside the penalty, he should be closer getting the best possible view of any contact, he’s not doing himself any favours there

RH at 2015-12-29 21:50:13

Apologies Inler caught Sterling!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:49:20

First free kick as Sterling catches Inler and the Referee brings play back

RH at 2015-12-29 21:46:45

The second half is underway!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:43:41

An entertaining first half in a game where the action has flowed from end to end. No major controversy but a couple of puzzling decisions both late in the half, Firstly Andy Garratt failed to flag Vardy offside when it was obvious from his wide left position from where he attempted to cross the ball. The other incorrect call being the failure to award a free kick to Leicester when Mahrez was simultaneously tackled fairly head on by Otamendi but recklessly from behind by Fernandinho, should have resulted in a caution. As the game has gone on the Referee has looked less restricted in the positional sense but he must always be mindful to press on in the final third to get that best possible viewing angle, at times I feel he holds back a little. But overall nothing he can’t get control of, but the Referee needs to raise his game and be alert as Leicester press high and Man City break quickly into attack

RH at 2015-12-29 21:32:43

Half Time

The home crowd are still restless and that failure to award a free kick following that challenge on Mahrez!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:31:21

Mahrez sandwiched between two Man City defenders there, no free kick which seemed harsh as Fernandinho clattered into the Leicester player from behind, should have been a free kick!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:28:58

Lucky that Vardy didn’t earn more than a fruitless corner, as Vardy was clearly offside in that last Attack and it wasn’t a difficult call for Andy Garratt as Vardy was wide left!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:27:03

Craig Pawson seems to look more comfortable with his positioning and movement in open games like this, when the action is compacted in midfield he doesn’t always get into the best viewing positions

RH at 2015-12-29 21:25:26

There’s so much to look forward to on Refcam, tomorrow night at 7.45 Liverpool who seem capable of any result, travel to Sunderland who simply have to win! We complete the weekend games with some Merseyside action when Everton face top four contenders Tottenham at 4.00

RH at 2015-12-29 21:23:12

Mangala powers into Huth for a heavy weight clash, Leicester quite rightly earning a free kick!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:20:47

Kolarov earns another free kick courtesy of Assistant Andy Garratt, but this time the call is spot on as Kante pushes him

RH at 2015-12-29 21:19:08

Kolarove gets lucky as he miss kicks the ball and catches Vardy and then wins a free kick!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:17:09

The possession stats are interesting for the last 5 minutes, 85% to Man City!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:14:53

Leicester continue to press high and unsettle Man City, the Referee is right to intervene quickly with a free kick when they overstep the mark!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:13:26

Simpson careless from behind on Silva, an easy free kick!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:11:05

Mahrez forces Kollarov to ground in front of Andy Garratt, he’s not happy but I’m with the Assistant, the challenge seemed ok to me!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:08:23

The game is flowing end to end at the moment, so both Assistants are getting their eye in

RH at 2015-12-29 21:06:56

The Referee again shows his pace as this time Sterling and Silva break quickly for Man City who are looking very useful going forward!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:04:07

Craig Pawson shows his pace with a great explosive sprint as Sterling and DeBruyne combined for that last Man City attack!

RH at 2015-12-29 21:02:22

Vardy makes his presence felt with a careless challenge on Sagna

RH at 2015-12-29 20:59:55

Inler goes to ground under pressure from Sterling, its a dangerous free kick position!

RH at 2015-12-29 20:58:05

Craig Pawson just needs to move in closer on occasions, as City attacked wide left he hung back, that’s not going to gain him the best viewing range

RH at 2015-12-29 20:54:52

Leicester are pressing high at the moment, TV pictures revealed that the Referee was nearer the centre circle earlier, thats leaving an awful lot of ground to make up if Vardy dispossesses a City defender, Assistant Andy Garratt will need to keep really focussed!

RH at 2015-12-29 20:52:04

The Referee just getting a little ahead of play and looking half over his shoulder on that last Leicester attack, better to be facing play with a 180 degree view of the action!

RH at 2015-12-29 20:50:21

Craig Pawson forced to break that comfortable long striding running action and up the pace as City quickly mounted their first attack!

RH at 2015-12-29 20:48:20

first free kick as Sagna fells Albrighton

RH at 2015-12-29 20:47:27

Perfect playing conditions, the pitch looks first class!

RH at 2015-12-29 20:45:58

As we see the action through the TV Cameras, Assistant Marc Perry is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Andy Garratt is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2015-12-29 20:45:18

Our match Referee Craig Pawson gets us underway!

RH at 2015-12-29 20:42:33

Today’s Match Referee is Craig Pawson. His Assistant Referees are Marc Perry and Andy Garratt, The Fourth Official is Mike Jones

RH at 2015-12-29 20:38:26

As the dust settles on yesterday’s action, Leicester seek to regain their position at the top of the Premier League! But high flyers Manchester City are in town and they will have ideas of their own, this one is too good to miss!
