- In the high-profile world of the Premier League, those watching will be, quite rightly, critical of Andre Marriner’s decision not to award a penalty when Fuchs challenged Lennon. 1 minute of madness amongst 89 minutes of sound and solid refereeing.
- In the interests of balance, there was much to admire about his refereeing – the ability to ‘forget’ about the error and ‘move on’ being a key feature.
- The referee’s timing and consistency of his cautions was also noteworthy.

Full time and a win for the Foxes – match summary to follow …….
AH at 2017-10-29 18:51:18
3 additional minutes to be played – Phil Jagielka is unhappy with the award of a throw-in to the Home Team – it’s been one of those afternoon’s for the men from Merseyside.

#LEIEVE Keep you focus lady and gents, this is a key final 5+ minutes …..
AH at 2017-10-29 18:39:25
#LEIEVE 10 minutes to go, and I am still of the opinion that Andre Marriner’s performance today will be tarnished by one decision ……
AH at 2017-10-29 18:36:24
That was an interesting call by Andre Marriner – clearly over-ruling Sian Massey-Ellis who had awarded a goal-kick and awarded the corner instead. I just pose a question, as the decision was not obviously incorrect, with replays not being 100% conclusive, what hat the best piece of teamwork by the referee – what will that have done for the Assistant’s confidence?

#LEIEVE Guyere correctly joins Davies in the book for Everton, Andre Marriner showing a consistent approach to his use of yellow cards
AH at 2017-10-29 18:22:08
#LEIEVE This is a key phase of the game – a goal here as a reward for the pressure being applied by the Away side will change the game completely, key that the refereeing team remain alert and focused.
AH at 2017-10-29 18:18:59
Ouch – Williams collides with Vardy – no offence, a genuine accident and it did not effect the outcome. In spite of the poor first half penalty decision, the referee has made a solid start to the second 45 minutes
AH at 2017-10-29 18:13:30
#LEIEVE A test of a referee is how he/she reacts to a poor decision. Andre has the experience to ‘park it – and move on’ – let’s hope he is successful in doing so for the rest of this game
AH at 2017-10-29 18:08:44
#LEIEVE I am unsure why Rooney looked perplexed by Andre Marriner’s free-kick award, that looked good to me !
AH at 2017-10-29 18:00:28
#LEIEVE Shame for Andre Marriner – but such is the lot of the referee – all his good work in the first half will be forgotten in the light of a poor decision when Everton should have been awarded a penalty as Fuchs bought down Lennon in the penalty area. I am at a loss as to why the award was not given as Andre was well placed.

Some great articles on our website for your half-time reading, no more so than our interview with David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd at https://you-are-the-ref.com/you-are-the-ref-interview-david-bumble-lloyd/. Amongst other subjects, he discusses the use of technology within umpiring, an interesting comparison between the use of DRS in cricket and VAR in football.

Time for a Bovril (ask you friends from the North of England of you’re not sure) and a discussion about the Fuchs / Lennon challenge
AH at 2017-10-29 17:48:49
2 additional minutes as the end of a first half which has simply flown by ……
AH at 2017-10-29 17:47:55
We have a difference of opinion on our twitter feed as Andy Murty @minceyheidman believes that Lennon went to ground early and therefore the referee’s call was correct – what do you think ?
AH at 2017-10-29 17:44:38
David Unsworth, his side 2-0 down, and a penalty appeal turned away, cuts a forlorn figure in the technical area – Welcome the Premier League management to the Rhino, as he is ‘affectionately’ known as to all at Goodison.
AH at 2017-10-29 17:39:40
#LEIEVE Mmmm – first incorrect call of the afternoon as Lennon is challenged in the penalty area, an incident that could well have bought a penalty award to Everton and a card for Fuchs. What’s your opinion, please let us know by tweeting us here @youaretheref
AH at 2017-10-29 17:34:24
The caretaker manager’s day goes from bad to worse as the unfortunate JonJoe Kenny slices a cross beyond the reach of Pickford and the Home Team have doubled their lead
AH at 2017-10-29 17:31:15
#LEIEVE Keep your tweets coming into us here @youaretheref. @boothysufc has done so, highlighting an error by Scott Duncan at the Leeds United v Sheffield United game on Friday evening when Baldock of the Away Team was forced to leave the field of play when he should have been allowed to remain.
AH at 2017-10-29 17:27:12
I think Andre Marriner has got that one right as well – Rooney’s challenge was no more than poorly timed, was not reckless, and therefore free-kick only was the correct decision
AH at 2017-10-29 17:25:10
Solid refereeing, once again, by Andre Marriner as he takes the first opportunity to issue a caution as Davies commits a cynical offence against the rampaging Jamie Vardy. It was key that the referee asserted his authority, and he did exactly that!
AH at 2017-10-29 17:22:31
Good advantage application as Gray is fouled in his own half – but stays on his feet – in a split second ‘fox in the box’ Vardy strikes, and the game has it’s first goal …… well played Andre …..
AH at 2017-10-29 17:16:32
As referenced on RefCam during my previous analysis of Andre Marriner, his reading of the game allows the almost languid running style and movement. He is not dynamic, and takes leaf out of Martin Atkinson’s’ book in terms of positioning and movement.
AH at 2017-10-29 17:12:41
#LEIEVE 10 minutes gone and the game is open and fast-flowing, proving the importance of having to be switched on from minute 1 as a match-official. There is often no ‘warm-up’ / settling down period, as both teams have proved today.

#LEIEVE Also great to see the match officials also wearing the poppy – rightly so !!
AH at 2017-10-29 17:00:31
#LEIEVE Great to see both teams ‘wearing’ the poppy as a mark of respect
AH at 2017-10-29 16:59:15
LEST WE FORGET !!!!!!!!
AH at 2017-10-29 16:57:12
#LEIEVE I use the word ‘consistent’ referring to Andre Marriner as, in my opinion, he has become the ‘safe pair of hands’, plus some more, with the hierarchy at the PGMO able to send Andre to any game, anywhere, knowing that for the majority of games, he will deliver. (I hope that is not the commentators curse for the referee today!). I just wonder however, bearing in mind the PGMO’s apparent reluctance to give games to the up and coming officials like Andy Madley, where are the next Andre Marriner’s going to come from?
AH at 2017-10-29 16:50:30
Today’s team of officials are headed by the consistent Andre Marriner, Simon Beck and Sian Massey-Ellis are the Assistants; Mike Jones has the 4th official duties on a day where there is sure to be a focus on the technical area, with the new manager in the Home Area and David Unsworth (manager elect?) in the Away Area.

#LEIEVE With a new man at the helm in Claude Puel, the faithful at Leicester City will be looking for a result today, proving perhaps that Shakespeare’s time in charge was much ado about nothing!

Welcome to the King Power Stadium for our 4th (yes 4th) RefCam coverage of the weekend as Leicester and Everton meet for a 4pm UK time kick-off, with my thanks to my colleague Stuart Martin for his comments from earlier today.
