Full Time

In summary – the referee “did OK”, but is “Ok” good enough for the MLS – I suggest not.  Although there were no key match errors, I do have some concerns:

  • The referee’s patrol path was far too narrow – this caused him to miss a caution in the 70th minute for an incident close to the technical area.

  • Throughout the 90 minutes, the referee lacked presence and an on the field authority.

  • I am not convinced that his caution selection was correct, typified by his decision to caution in the 85th minute when the game was over as a contest.

Thanks for tuning in, and we look forward to seeing you next time here at You Are The Ref.

GOAL! Summary to follow …..

AH at 2017-04-23 22:57:33

2 minutes additional time …….

AH at 2017-04-23 22:53:42

Yellow CardSeattle’s Alfaro is cautioned – I think the common terminology is ‘soft’, that was something of a nothing caution, not needed at this stage of the game for what was nothing more than a routine offence.

Another very good non-offside call as Bruin could, and should, have scored a 4th for Seattle

AH at 2017-04-23 22:42:39

15 minutes to go and Seattle seem to be happy to soak up the pressure and consume time.

AH at 2017-04-23 22:40:50

A position nearer to the touchline would have given the referee a better opportunity to recognise the severity of Smith’s offence.

AH at 2017-04-23 22:38:36

Unfortunately the referee fails to assert his authority as Smith body-checks Jones to prevent Seattle developing a promising attack.  The challenge was cynical and worthy of a caution.

AH at 2017-04-23 22:34:12

#LAvSEA As the game enters the final quarter, Seattle continue to dominate and are comfortably in control – it’s important that the match officials remain focused and ensure that the game is bought to a safe and successful conclusion.

AH at 2017-04-23 22:29:30

#LAvSEA the referee’s narrow patrol path is starting to bug me now – he is far too central as he moves from penalty area to penalty area.  It’s highly likely that he will miss an incident close to the touchline as the game progresses.

AH at 2017-04-23 22:23:17

#LAvSEA We have had a spate of 7 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the second half – a massive cue for the referee to start to assert his authority in the opening phases of the 2nd half

AH at 2017-04-23 22:18:46

#LAvSEA Careful analysis of the referee’s positioning and movement and I conclude that he needs to move quicker into the 2nd and 3rd phases of play – he could do with being on his toes whilst watching play, thus allowing him to move quicker as the next phase of play develops.

AH at 2017-04-23 22:11:37

#LAvSEA Here we go for the 2nd half – although the referee has only made one mistake so far, he does not seem to have a ‘presence’ on the field of play – compare and contrast to Martin Atkinson at the FA Cup Semi-Final yesterday who simply alluded authority and confidence

Half Time The Half-Time break and LA Galaxy need time to regroup having conceded 3 first- half goals, the final one being a well judged non-offside call.  Morris was ‘level’ as the ball was played to him – a great call by Assistant Corey Parker

AH at 2017-04-23 21:55:18

GOAL! Seattle continue to take candy from the LA Galaxy baby as Jordan Morris extends his side’s lead just before half-time

AH at 2017-04-23 21:52:31

Yellow Card5 to go to half-time and the referee issues a 2nd yellow card of the game, this time  to Alessandrini of LA Galaxy – that was a justified yellow card as Seattle were developing a promising attack

AH at 2017-04-23 21:48:38

GOAL!  The Sounders continue to dominate, forcing former Premiership player Ashley Cole to put through his own goal and Seattle have a justified 2 goal cushion.

AH at 2017-04-23 21:46:36

GOAL! Clint Dempsey, not against the run of play, opens the scoring for the Away Team

AH at 2017-04-23 21:39:44

Yellow CardPoor refereeing in my opinion- he stops LA taking a quick free-kick to issue a caution to Roldan when Jones was well placed.  The challenge itself was not worthy of a caution and LA were denied a clear run on goal

AH at 2017-04-23 21:34:52

#LAvSEA My impression so far is that Ismail Elfath is no Mark Clattenburg or Anthony Talyor when it comes to movement around the field of play – although to his credit, he has missed nothing so far ….

AH at 2017-04-23 21:32:23

20 minutes gone and as Seattle continue to dominate, still nothing to trouble the match officials – it’s been a very quiet game so far

AH at 2017-04-23 21:23:59

The referee is well positioned on this occasion to detect a penal offence committed by Galaxy’s Jermaine Jones, a decision given with some authority.

AH at 2017-04-23 21:19:08

My sympathies got o the Assistant Referees who will have to make offside calls with the grey and white shirts hardly distinguishable – this may be better at pitch level – but the contract is not great.

AH at 2017-04-23 21:16:42

8 minutes gone and nothingto test the Match Officials, just the 1 penal offence so far …

AH at 2017-04-23 21:14:10

We covered Ismail Elfaht on RefCam 3 weeks ago and our impression was that patrol path was too narrow and he kept getting in the way of play, let’s see what this game brings.

AH at 2017-04-23 21:08:55

Ismail Elfath makes a return to RefCam analysis, for this fixture, with Corey Parker and Mike Rottersman operating as his Assistants.  Baldomero Toledo has the 4th official duties.

My colleagues on RefCam have produced some excellent and forthright comment regarding this weekend’s games and my thanks to Mark Halsey and Rob Harris for their words of wisdom.

AH at 2017-04-23 21:04:24

Here at You Are The Ref we enjoyed watching Martin Atkinson controlling the Chelsea v Spurs FA Cup Semi-Final. Keith Hackett offered the following comments post-match.  “His game was first class, ensuring that he was well positioned when making his decisions.  Take a bow Martin Atkinson and your team for producing the best refereeing performance of the season!”

AH at 2017-04-23 20:59:05

This season we have confirmation of attendance from referees from 12 different countries from around the globe, including USA, Scandinavia, Columbia, New Zealand, Estonia, UAE and Iran.  Throughout the tournament they will receive coaching, advice and guidance from former Premier League coaches and assessors.

AH at 2017-04-23 20:58:09

Other overseas visitors to this year’s tournament include Houston Dynamo, JHR Rotterdam, FC Basel, Al Dhafra, Kawasaki Frontale, ANB Futbol and Maiden City – a truly international tournament.

AH at 2017-04-23 20:56:32
