The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • A Master class in the art of Refereeing from Felix Brych!
  • Three first half key match incidents called correctly
  • Complete control and quality of decision making mark this as one of the best Refereeing performances of the season so far!

I said at half time that we had seen a master class from Felix Brych, which was just as well because he went on to complete the job in the second half, so what made his game so special? Well he was alert and focussed from the start, not like recent Premier League performances we’ve seen at Newcastle and Chelsea where it would appear that the big calls came too early for the Referee. Not Tonight! Felix Brych was focussed to punish Davies’s early penalty area challenge on Bernardeschi. He remained fully composed to correctly deny Kane a penalty kick and rightly punish Auriers needless challenge on Costa for Juve’s second spot kick. He just exuded confidence and had the respect of the players despite this being an extremely intense match where the final result was in doubt right up to the final whistle. He showed masterly control of this game using a stepped approach to match control and a recognition of offences that was impressive despite the cauldron like atmosphere and the crowd often baying for free kicks when home players went to ground. He remained strong and self assured moving comfortably through the channels showing an impressive turn of speed to ensure an ideal viewing range for final third decision making. Surely an example of Refereeing at the highest quality by a man at the top of his game. Keith Hackett feels that Felix must be a favourite to Referee the World cup final and on the basis of what we have seen tonight who could argue with that! His team did well also, yes Mark Borsch should have flagged Higuain offside for the first goal, but the margin of error was so tight that it would harsh to criticise. In every respect what a night!

A minimum of two minutes additional time to be played!

RH at 2018-02-13 22:32:10

As we approach the final  minutes this is where some of our domestic Referee’s feel the pressure and it shows, I am confident that this will not be the case tonight!

As we approach the closing stages of this match a word of deserved praise for Referee Felix Brych who is looking as composed and focussed as at any point in this match. This encounter has presented a challenge worthy of any Referee at this level. He has demonstrated superb recognition of offences, a stepped approach to match control and most impressive mobility and positioning, we’ve seen arguably one of the most complete Refereeing performances of the season so far!

RH at 2018-02-13 22:23:33

Yellow CardBentancur with a Reckless challenge on Ben Davies, an obvious caution rightly issued!

RH at 2018-02-13 22:19:42

Dembele does really well to get possession of the ball before Higuian makes a careless holding challenge, free kick Spurs

RH at 2018-02-13 22:17:46

Sando gets out of jail as Assistant Borsch gives Juve a soft free kick following a Aurier challenge near the flag post

RH at 2018-02-13 22:15:09

GOAL!What a superb free kick from Eriksen and Spurs are level!

RH at 2018-02-13 22:14:20

Dangerous free kick position for Juventus as Alli skilfully draws the careless challenge from Chiellini

RH at 2018-02-13 22:12:48

Benatia makes a risky challenge from behind on Kane and gets away with it, must have gone through the Referees mind as the home defender is already on a caution

RH at 2018-02-13 22:10:23

Lamella handles the ball in the Juve penalty area and the Referee who is well placed in the final third penalises the offence

RH at 2018-02-13 22:08:09

Higuain gets in front of Aurier at the half way line and skilfully earns a free kick

RH at 2018-02-13 22:06:30

The Referee needs to stay strong in this final half hour, the home crowd and players will place much pressure on him, but he’s looking good and so far and has been up for the challenge in every respect!

RH at 2018-02-13 22:04:06

Yellow CardHiguain receives a caution for dissent after Vertonghens challenge see’s the home player go to ground, he didn’t get the verdict and shows his frustration

RH at 2018-02-13 22:01:46

Not for the first time I say that the next goal is vital, its that kind of game!

RH at 2018-02-13 22:00:19

Spurs still on the offensive with Juventus forced to counter attack, the Referee still looking comfortable working through the channels to the final third at each end!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:57:19

Not perfection though as the Referee gets in the way of the ball as Costa goes inside, at least Felix Brych is human!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:55:21

Juventus players have gone to ground but despite the crowd’s baying for a free kick, the Referee has remained calm and exercised his superb recognition of offences and allowed play to continue

The second half has commenced!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:42:33

#JuveTOT #Juventus #THFC

Three key match incidents all called correctly as Referee Felix Brych delivers a first half master class! Two penalties awarded correctly as first Davies and then Aurier show their European inexperience with needless penalty area challenges. Harry Kane also went to ground under pressure from Benatia but the Spurs man held himself up to invite the contact and the Referee rightly in my view did not award a penalty kick. Felix Brych has looked calm focused, alert and in complete control issuing cautions also to Davies for the first penalty incident and Benatia’s reckless challenge on Kane. TV shows that Higuain was just offside for Juventus’s first goal but with the naked eye that’s the type of error that you can’t be too critical of. But Spurs have come back strongly and despite giving away two penalties are still in this game, what a cracking second half in prospect!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:33:57

Half Time

RH at 2018-02-13 21:33:38

Let off for Spurs as Lloris gets a hand to Higuain’s spot kick!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:32:27

Costa does Aurier fort pace and the Spurs man brings him down. nailed on Penalty!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:31:19

Yellow CardBenatia commits a reckless challenge from behind on Kane and is rightly cautioned!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:30:19

The Referee is well placed to view Kane’s careless aerial challenge on Pjanic from a corner

RH at 2018-02-13 21:26:56

The mood in the stadium has subdued as has the match tempo, Spurs are on top but this game promises much and dare I say more key match incidents for the Match Officials!

Good offside call from Assistant Mark Borsch as Costa mistimes his run and the flag is raised

RH at 2018-02-13 21:21:07

GOAL!Harry Kane delivers with a trademark finish, what a game!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:19:30

This a key phase of the game, Spurs are looking to pull a goal back and they in the ascendancy at the moment, the next goal will be pivotal, the Match Officials must stay fully focussed here!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:16:55

The game is pulsating at the moment, end to end counter attacking as Spurs look to get a toe hold in the match, the Referee is coping well with the pace of play at the moment!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:13:56

Don’t write Spurs off yet though, Buffon pulling off a  classy save as the visitors press, this game is high tempo at the moment!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:12:26

As Referees don’t you just feel reassured that the man in the middle is on his game when he’s getting the big calls right, what a contrast to the Premier League Refereeing performances we’ve seen this past few days at Newcastle and Chelsea!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:09:51

#JuveTOT #Juventus #THFC

With the opening period half way through we’ve had two key match incidents, but Referee Felix Brych looks alert and focused in his decision making and has got the big calls right, that must surely have earned him credibility with both sides!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:07:30

A TV replay showing that Kane momentarily held himself up to initiate contact from Benatia before he went to ground, not a penalty for me

RH at 2018-02-13 21:05:21

Less than 20 minutes gone and the Referee is looking strong and focused in his decision making!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:04:13

Kane attempts to win a penalty by throwing himself to the ground under pressure from Benatia, but the Referee is not impressed and I agree with him!

RH at 2018-02-13 21:01:52

Assistant Stefan Lupp alert there to signal that Eriksen had failed to keep the ball in play, goal kick Juventus

RH at 2018-02-13 20:58:28

A reminder there of the standard of Refereeing at the highest level, Felix Brych is alert and focused despite the cauldron like atmosphere to award that penalty which was spot on!

RH at 2018-02-13 20:56:05

GOAL!Higuain punishes Spurs further as the hosts go 2-0 up!

RH at 2018-02-13 20:55:05

Yellow CardPenalty! Felix Brych rightly awards a penalty as Ben Davies makes a clumsy challenge on Bernardeschi

RH at 2018-02-13 20:51:11

If you are watching the game on TV, Stefan Lupp is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Mark Borsch is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2018-02-13 20:48:51

GOAL!From the restart Higuain gets Juventus off to a perfect start!

RH at 2018-02-13 20:47:53

A delayed whistle from Felix Brych as Dembele grounds Pjanic and we have the first free kick of the game

He refereed his first senior international match in October that year, taking charge of Romania‘s 2–0 win over Luxembourg in UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying Group G. In February 2008, Brych was appointed to referee the 2007–08 UEFA Cup Round of 32 match between Panathinaikos and Rangers,] and in October 2008, he officiated the 2008–09 UEFA Champions’ League Group D match between Liverpool and PSV Eindhoven.

The business end of the Champions League now kicks off as the Round of 16 games signal the knock out stage of Europe’s greatest club cup competition. Its first leg time this week and next week and tonight on Refcam we feature one of England’s five competing teams, Tottenham Hotspur. Confidence will be high from the Group Stages where Spurs topped group H relegating Real Madrid to second spot. Juventus however are seasoned competitors at this level and of course were losing finalists last season. This season they finished as runners up to Barcelona in Group D. This is a massive game for Tottenham and a true test of their European credentials
