The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • Two Key Match Incidents called correctly!
  • A low tempo match where Liverpool dominated
  • No cautions issued but there should have been one!

We at You Are The Ref say its all about getting the big decisions right and on that score Kevin Friend has certainly delivered tonight! He rightly judged that Robertson’s 72nd minute penalty area challenge on Quaner was not worthy of a spot kick, despite there being a marginal degree of upper body contact. He was correct again four minutes later as Can got in front of Billing and the Huddersfield player got sucked in by falling on his opponent, penalty kick the only option. Other than that the only other talking point in a low tempo game was the Referee’s unexplainable decision not to caution Lowe’s 32nd minute rugby style hold on the advancing Salah. Kevin moved around well, didn’t get caught up in play and other than the one observation I’ve made, will feel satisfied with his evenings work, but why not aim higher Kevin? that caution would have really cemented a good evenings work. It seemed that keeping the yellow card in your pocket was a greater temptation.  Both Assistants looked solid, Simon Bennett again particularly impressive both in Technique and Offside Decision making.

A minimum of three minutes additional time to be played!

89

Mark Scholes rightly holds that flag until Billing pursued and played the ball, offside

87

RH at 2018-01-30 22:45:04

Milner fells Ince with a careless tackle, nailed on free kick!

85

RH at 2018-01-30 22:42:06

It has to be said that the attitude of the players has played its part in the low free kick count in this match

82

RH at 2018-01-30 22:39:52

Ince too aggressive on Mane in the centre circle there and despite the home crowds distain its a Liverpool free kick!

Another key match incident called correctly as Billings careless penalty area challenge on Can results in a Liverpool penalty!

77

RH at 2018-01-30 22:35:12

GOAL!Salah converts 3-0 Liverpool!

76

RH at 2018-01-30 22:34:35

Penalty! Billing stupid falls on Can and concedes a penalty!

Just the one Refereeing key match incident so far and Kevin Friend has called it right!

74

RH at 2018-01-30 22:31:41

Looking at a replay of that Robertson Quaner challenge, yes there was some upper body contact but not enough in my view to merit a penalty

72

RH at 2018-01-30 22:30:11

Robertson and Quanner come together in the Liverpool penalty area and the home player goes to ground, Kevin Friend is not impressed and waves away penalty appeals, I have to say I agree!

70

RH at 2018-01-30 22:27:05

For all Liverpool’s dominance if the home team scored now we would have a cracking last twenty minutes!

67

RH at 2018-01-30 22:24:06

Looking across to the far touch line, I’m noting the superb technique and poise of Simon Bennett who has to be one of the most impressive Assistants these days at this level!

63

RH at 2018-01-30 22:20:54

Jorgensen floors Mane in midfield, easy free kick award

62

RH at 2018-01-30 22:19:03

I wonder if there will be a point in this half where Huddersfield come off the back foot and have a go! It would certainly change the match tempo which is subdued to say the least at present!

56

RH at 2018-01-30 22:15:32

Hogg goes in late on Lovern right in front of Mark Scholes who rightly flags, the Referee plays on, taking into account the tempo and the small number of free kicks so far (7 in the first half) why not stop the game and have a word? especially after the same player committed a foul moments earlier? I mentioned a stepped approach to match control earlier in this blog, I have noticed it yet!

53

RH at 2018-01-30 22:10:20

Hogg a bit heavy on Mane, just careless, a free is all that’s needed there

51

RH at 2018-01-30 22:08:57

We’re five minutes into this half and tactically there seems to be no difference from the first period, is it goal difference and the danger of not getting hammered that’s influencing the home teams formation?

RH at 2018-01-30 22:06:50

The best way to prepare for the game, set pieces, penalties and more from Mark Halsey, Mark Clattenburg, Jake Collin, Sonia Denoncourt, Keith Hackett, Roger Dilkes, Guy Beale, Rob Harris and other referee coaches in The Verdict at academy.you-are-the-ref.com

That was a tight offside! Simon Bennett signalling Robertson offside on the far side of the field of play

The second half has started!

A first half that has been played in a good sprit by both teams and as a consequence the Referee has not been troubled too much. The only incident of note being Lowe’s 32nd minute challenge on Salah as the Liverpool player was making his way from the half way line into the Huddersfield half. Lowe anchored himself and bear hugged Salah in the most blatant manner, Kevin Friend only some five metres away does no more than award a free kick, why no caution? it was nailed on, a gift in terms of setting the bar on tolerance. Both Assistants look steady and with Liverpool now two up, will Huddersfield come out of the traps at the start of the second half? The Match Official’s need to be switched on from the start of this second period

Not for a lack of trying does Mounie eventually haul Gomez to the ground, nailed on free kick!

41

RH at 2018-01-30 21:42:32

Simon Bennett spot on with that offside flag against Mooy, this Assistant really is delivering some great offside calls these days!

39

RH at 2018-01-30 21:40:34

Mane over runs the ball and is too vigorous in trying to win it back and commits a careless lunge on Hogg, this is a dangerous position for Liverpool

37

RH at 2018-01-30 21:38:53

Mounie takes off after minimal contact from Milner, just a free kick will do there

36

RH at 2018-01-30 21:37:41

I was going to say that the first half or so of the game has enabled the Referee to adopt a low profile, unfortunately complacency crept in there as Lowe should have been cautioned, I hope that doesn’t come back to bite the Referee later in the game

32

RH at 2018-01-30 21:34:53

#HUDLIV #HTAFC #LFC

Lowe blatantly holds Salah around the waist and no caution? that was a nicely timed present for any Referee at this stage of the game to set a tolerance level.

27

RH at 2018-01-30 21:28:02

Well they say that goals change games, so will that Can strike change the match tempo?

25

RH at 2018-01-30 21:26:50

GOAL!Can’s well hit shot benefits from a deflection! 1-0 Liverpool

22

RH at 2018-01-30 21:22:28

When Liverpool are building an attack following a period of sustained possession, its important that Kevin Friend ensures that he is not square of the ball, in case play comes inside with a run or pass, he’s getting a bit close to the action at times but has not got in the way so far!

Huddersfield threatening with attacking width! that would require the Referee to change his patrol path if we see more of that!

12

RH at 2018-01-30 21:13:21

Mane flagged offside by Mark Scholes as Lossl catches the ball, play continues, I wasn’t expecting a flag there

11

RH at 2018-01-30 21:11:35

Firmino and Billing clash as the Liverpool player catches his opponent, nothing more than careless and rightly only a free kick

6

RH at 2018-01-30 21:06:15

Already Huddersfield are compact in their formation suggesting that Liverpool will enjoy much possession in their opponents half, Assiatnt Mark Scholes shouldn’t have a problem with concentration drifting as he’s working the home defence!

5

RH at 2018-01-30 21:05:28

Firmino shoves his opponent off the ball and concedes the first free kick of the night

RH at 2018-01-30 21:00:38

If you are watching the game on TV, Simon Bennett is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Mark Scholes is running the nearside touch line.

The teams and Match Officials have entered the field of play!

RH at 2018-01-30 20:55:39

I watched with interest the recent Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur Premier League game, one of the issues raised on Refcam was the inconsistency of some second half cautions given that other similar offences that occurred escaped a sanction. Compare Kevin Fiends performance on that game with Michael Oliver’s handling of the mid-week Carabao Cup Semi Final between Arsenal and Chelsea where the bar was set before half time with the first caution and that standard was maintained throughout the game, the players knew what to expect and the outcome from a Refereeing perspective was very pleasing. I’m sure that Kevin will be looking to apply a consistent stepped approach to match control this evening.

Huddersfield Town v Liverpool

KEVIN FRIEND
Assistants:
S Bennett & M Scholes
Fourth official: Jon Moss

BT Sport will broadcast this 8pm reunion between old friends Jurgen Klopp and David Wagner hosted by the club where Bill Shankly first showed his managerial chops. It’s also 14th versus 4th place following Liverpool’s shock defeat at Swansea which prevented them overtaking Chelsea in the Premier League.

Belgian centre-forward Laurent Depoitre will be hoping it won’t be long before he faces all or some of Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joe Gomez as group G opponents, injury and club form permitting. Should Alberto Moreno keep his Spain place he will also be glad he paused to take notes on Huddersfield’s Moroccan midfielder, Abdelhamid Sabiri.

The first ever encounter between the Terriers and the Reds came in the FA Cup back in March, 1920 and ended 2-1, a scoreline reversed in the first league meeting at Leeds Road a year on, in March, 1921.

The last meeting in Yorkshire was in December, 1999, again in the FA Cup, when goals from Titi Camara and Dominic Matteo left the score at 2-0 and there was a solitary yellow card for Kevin Gray.

Kevin Friend has refereed three games at Anfield this season and two Terriers away games, including the reverse fixture between these two clubs, which ended 3-0 to the home side.

All you need to know about Kevin Friend:

Matches in 2017/18: 13 (9 on TV)
Fourth official appointments in 2017/18: 17

Yellows: 35 Reds: 0

Points will be much needed by both teams tonight, the hosts will be desperate not to sink into the bottom three relegation placings at this stage of the season which would be a psychological blow, a defeat at Stoke in their last Premier League encounter and a disappointing FA Cup draw at home with Championship side Birmingham City has not lightened the mood. Whereas the visitors urgently need to chase down a top four placing to guarantee Champions League Football on Merseyside next season and rid themselves of their recent inconsistency. Huddersfield will be looking to take something from this game after that pointless visit to fellow strugglers Stoke in the last match round and Liverpool need to take points from this one after their disappointing reverse at Swansea on their recent Monday night outing not to mention that weekend FA Cup exit.
