Holland v Costa Rica

Overall summary. 2 Key Match Decisions will be long debated and will be the main talking points of this game. No 2nd yellow card shown by the referee to the No 15 CR just before full time and is as referenced in my BLOG when a further similar challenge then warranted a yellow card? consistency is what people want in these situations. No penalty kick awarded to Costa Rica in 1st period of extra time. Although AR nearside would have had the better view and angle, it was a big and brave call for an AR to indicate with his flag. The Referees strengths were his fitness levels and movement, he had acceleration when he was covering breakaways out of defence and I liked his calm and relaxed personality. He was consistent with his use of yellow cards issued and this aided him in his management of the game overall. Assistant Referees – There has been a lot of debate tonight regarding their flagging technique, the points I have raised are for you to use to develop best practice in the art of being an Assistant Referee. It is important as we are viewing a World Cup Quarter Final and expect standards to be high, this could also be said at any level. Unfortunately, tonight this has not always been the case and is as I referenced earlier in my blog tonight when I discussed the high quality of Cann., Mullarkey, Hurd and Fletcher. I am sure you will see these Assistants running the line in the Semis and Finals. JUST WATCH THEIR COMPLETE PERFORMANCE AND THEN COMPARE THIS TO TONIGHTS ARs PERFORMANCE AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!! What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com Many thanks for your company this evening at You Are The Ref.Com – Join us again on Tuesday 8th July KO 21.00 hrs for the first semi final Brazil v Germany. Have a good evening. Andy Martin

Krul wandering around in the penalty area, distraction techniques used again, no further action taken by the referee. Krul then saves the CR penalty and it is all over for Costa Rica. Holland win 4-3 on penalties. Dutch spot on but were Costa Rica denied a penalty kick in open play?

AM at 2014-07-05 23:46:35
Holland score to make it 4-3

AM at 2014-07-05 23:46:14
Holland score to make it 3-2. Krul again is delaying matters surely this has to be a yellow card. CR score 3-3

AM at 2014-07-05 23:44:44
Krul is trying to delay the penalty kick, the referee has to be proactive here and sort quickly. CR score the penalty kick now 2-2

AM at 2014-07-05 23:43:45
CR penalty saved by Krul. Robben scores  to make it 2-1

AM at 2014-07-05 23:42:54
CR score, look at referee and assistants position. Van Persie scores right in the corner. Did you notice the ARs position on the goal line at the edge of the junction with the goal area line?

AM at 2014-07-05 23:41:09
Penalty 1 will be taken by CR. Referee is being preventative by talking to both goal keepers of his requirements of them

AM at 2014-07-05 23:40:11
Penalty Kicks – The referee looks relaxed and calm with both captains, a smile and handshake goes a long way

AM at 2014-07-05 23:36:59
Whistle goes full time now onto penalties. Don’t forget quick break, then you must look at Keith Hacketts BLOG on law requirements for the taking of penalty kicks

AM at 2014-07-05 23:35:29
Flag up offside nearside AR. Holland Goalkeeper SUB 1 OFF 23 ON! just made in time

AM at 2014-07-05 23:33:30
Holland hit the bar what an effort and what a game with a number of twists and turns

AM at 2014-07-05 23:31:04
End to end now what a finish CR one end then straight down to Holland attack, referee working hard to remain with play

AM at 2014-07-05 23:28:39
Corner kick referee in a good view to give, he has upped his game and is finding extra energy resources

AM at 2014-07-05 23:27:57
As we close towards Penalty kicks don’t forget to look at Keith Hacketts BLOG on law requirements for the taking of these penalties, it is a must..

AM at 2014-07-05 23:26:54
Offside Holland near side AR correct

AM at 2014-07-05 23:25:15
It is key as we enter the final 10 minutes it is important that ALL the Match Officials keep their focus and concentration. Yellow card for Holland No 19 correct reckless challenge on CR goal keeper, Referee swiftly in to calm matters

AM at 2014-07-05 23:22:36
Free kick to Holland. Yellow card to CR 2 reckless challenge on Robben. My question here is how is this different to the No 15 of CRs challenge in a similar situation just before full time? 2nd yellow? What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com Keep your views coming in, I am getting all your messages!!

AM at 2014-07-05 23:19:33
2balls on the field of play which the referee is unaware of, it is important that he keeps his focus and concentration, I hope that fatigue does not set in as the award of the free kick to Holland following the ball hitting the shoulder of the CR 15 could have been an incorrect key match incident had a goal been scored by Holland? also there has just been a review of a penalty claim by CR although in my opinion the nearside AR would have had a better view on this incident. 2nd period of extra time commences

AM at 2014-07-05 23:14:05
Free kick to CR good flag from far side AR, 2 MINUTES ADDED TIME

AM at 2014-07-05 23:13:22
CR are defending in numbers, referee has awarded a free kick to Holland when the ball appears to hit the shoulder of the No 15 of CR. Robben takes the free kick and it is blocked by a CR defender

AM at 2014-07-05 23:10:02
Ball is put out of play whilst the referee assesses CR player, no treatment required

AM at 2014-07-05 23:08:07
Offside by far side AR replays show correct decision

AM at 2014-07-05 23:07:35
No penalty to CR the referee would have needed support from nearside AR who had a better view, but no indication given

AM at 2014-07-05 23:04:50
CR sub 17 off 22 on

AM at 2014-07-05 23:04:14
Stoppage for treatment to CR goal keeper injured in fall to the ground, referee manages this stoppage well

AM at 2014-07-05 23:03:00
Offside by far side AR –  Holland player, tight call by AR replays show that the Holland player was onside

AM at 2014-07-05 23:00:47
I have received a number of texts regarding the ARs flag technique thank you for these. The main aim of these development areas is to assist in your development as an Assistant Referee

AM at 2014-07-05 22:57:59
The Referee has been consistent in his showing of yellow cards, his management of the game, fitness levels, breakaway from defence have all been very good, he has taken a firm line on grappling at corner kicks. Just the one area of contention was the challenge by the No 15 of CR on Robben did you think it should have received a 2nd yellow followed by a red card?   What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2014-07-05 22:54:24
Robben flagged offside by far side AR, replays show that he was onside. Extra time it is then

AM at 2014-07-05 22:51:53
No 15 Diaz CR commits a reckless challenge on Robben and in my opinion is fortunate not to receive a 2nd yellow card followed by a red card, for a second cautionable offence. Scramble in CR penalty as Holland push for goal, CR defend with their lives

AM at 2014-07-05 22:48:33
4 minutes added time, correct allowing for the stoppages in this half

AM at 2014-07-05 22:47:53
Offside far AR, referee quickly moves to a good viewing position, next phase of play

AM at 2014-07-05 22:46:38
Ball is played into VanPersie and a miss close to full time

AM at 2014-07-05 22:44:58
As we enter the final 5 minutes of normal time, it is looking like extra time is fast approaching

AM at 2014-07-05 22:42:02
Yellow card No3 CR or was it a dive by Robben? free kick hits post, good flag for free kick by AR, this is proactive and supportive, just what is required

AM at 2014-07-05 22:39:58
Thanks Ed Bellion for your text MLS have been using spray for 2 years and the only drawback he mentions is that defenders can still create delay and prevent a quick one. My observations regarding ARs technique is that it is an important factor of your AR performance and we are looking at a World Cup quarter final game!

AM at 2014-07-05 22:36:41
Corner kick to Holland good signal by far side AR. CR sub 16 off 8 on

AM at 2014-07-05 22:34:05
Sub Holland 21 off 17 on will this change things?, tempo, game management, officials will need to be aware and focussed as we enter final 15 minutes

AM at 2014-07-05 22:32:39
A number of possible free kicks in very quick succession close to the touchline, referee then correctly chooses to award a free kick to Holland high foot by CR player

AM at 2014-07-05 22:30:00
CR 16 back on field of play, quick break by CR, referee put in an acceleration of pace to view and get the best angle to judge

AM at 2014-07-05 22:28:32
Stoppage for treatment for injury to CR player, referee manages with support from 4th official

AM at 2014-07-05 22:27:29
Paul Rejer was an Assistant Referee Coach on the Premier League and I was fortunate enough to have been part of his Coaching Team for 4 years. During his time in this role he developed and enhanced Assistant Refereeing in this Country and took it to a new level. I am sure that he must be very proud of seeing Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey putting in World Class Assistant Refereeing Performances. Now working in America as Training and Development Manager with Peter Walton as Manager of Referees. Paul must also be very proud to see Sean Mark Hurd and Joe Fletcher each putting in such accomplished performances. However the flag technique is an area where the assistants need help on so far in this World Cup, what do you think? What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2014-07-05 22:23:27
Sub for CR 9 OFF 21 ON

AM at 2014-07-05 22:22:55
Offside by far side AR correct, why not retain flag though to enhance decision making process?. No 4 Holland yellow card correct reckless challenge on CR player. Referee is remaining consistent in his showing of yellow cards.

What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.comAM at 2014-07-05 22:20:41
Free kick to CR, spray in use as you know from my previous BLOGS I think it is brilliant. Let us hope it comes into the Premier League next season. Will it? What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2014-07-05 22:18:43
No penalty to CR the referee could not have got into a better viewing position, pace, movement and good viewing angle key here

AM at 2014-07-05 22:17:33
Just a point on the far side AR not sure why he is crouching as he is running. It is good practice to keep an upright posture as you move as this also gives you a much better peripheral vision all round

AM at 2014-07-05 22:15:30
The referee is managing the game overall very well. The yellow card for the No. 4 of CR just earlier is showing that when the tempo goes up he goes up with it and keeps a lid on things. The players know they cannot over step the mark.

AM at 2014-07-05 22:13:17
Offside by nearside AR, who is adopting a quip in his flagging movement as lowers it and then does not retain the flag to assist with the correct restart.

AM at 2014-07-05 22:11:17
Free kick to Holland. Reckless challenge by No 4 of CR on Robben yellow card correct. AR far side confirms referees decision by flagging after the referee. You need to be quicker in these situations and be flagging first. Confirmation is not effective

AM at 2014-07-05 22:08:49
Assistant nearside is keeping fairly static position and not keeping an field view. Ball is player back to the Dutch GK and he remains static? Flag is all over the place

AM at 2014-07-05 22:07:05
Referee skips over the ball he is keeping close to play and judging no free kicks, he is managing things and that is what the game is dictating at the moment.

AM at 2014-07-05 22:05:23
Free kick to CR, this would have been enhanced by a flag signal from the far side AR. Teamwork, also if you don’t flag in these situations players will be saying but the AR hasn’t flagged, why give them the opportunity

AM at 2014-07-05 22:03:16
2nd half kicks off

AM at 2014-07-05 22:03:03
With regards to the assistants I have mentioned that the far side AR seems to be pulling his flag along behind him when he is running, this is likened to a motion of taking your dog for a walk. Near side AR I would like to see him hold and retain his position and to hold his flag for offside situations, Sell it to all referee, players and spectators

AM at 2014-07-05 21:57:53
Dissent by word or action. One thing that I have noticed during this World Cup is the vast reduction in the use of yellow cards for dissent whether verbally or dissent by action. My question to you is why is this?
  1. Can you name a player that you have seen cautioned for dissent in this World Cup? I can give you one Mario Yepes Colombia last night (71st minute), can you think of anymore??? why is this?
  2. Are the referees managing this more and or tolerating?
  3. Or do you think there has been a reduction in the disputing of decisions by players?
  4. Has there been a greater respect for referees in this marvellous World Cup?
  5. Has the high levels of fitness seen by the referees / assistants meant that by being well up with play decisions have been more readily accepted by players due to their credible and close proximity?
  6. What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2014-07-05 21:53:35
Half time – The referee has been virtually invisible, he is letting the game flow, his movement, pace and acceleration had been very good, so have a lot of referee performances during this World Cup, fitness levels have been very good. Onto the second half it will be interesting to see how this game develops, match officials will need to be totally focussed and concentrating as this game could well come very much alive, a goal, a penalty kick, a yellow or red card, a poor challenge could well spark things into life..

AM at 2014-07-05 21:47:54
Free kick to Holland, protests from CR in front of Technical Area, Referee runs away quickly amid protests from CR players. 1 minute added time. Please keep in touch at half time to give me your thoughts on dissent seen at this World Cup. Half time 0 – 0

AM at 2014-07-05 21:44:58
Thanks Ian M for text referee decided challenge only careless on robben, maybe he was also taking into account how match is developing and also his own consistency as he showed a yellow to CR 15 just earlier

AM at 2014-07-05 21:40:09
Free kick to Holland after slight delay in whistle why?, after a further brief time a yellow card is then shown to 15 of CR DIAZ, good management of the free kick, spray in use, good communication by referee to players prior to restart

AM at 2014-07-05 21:37:35
Good to see the 4th Official standing and being proactive

AM at 2014-07-05 21:35:53
2 free kicks to CR, followed by a free kick to Holland. Referee again swiftly in to calm matters and manage players

AM at 2014-07-05 21:34:46
Have you noticed the far side Assistant when he runs with his flag it is some way behind him. Much better to run with the flag at your side

AM at 2014-07-05 21:32:55
Referee gets into a close position to award a free kick to CR. Followed by a further free to CR, Referee again has a good close and credible view.

AM at 2014-07-05 21:31:15
No penalty kick to Costa Rica, referee has a good view. Then good support from Assistant far side, hand ball free kick to Holland

AM at 2014-07-05 21:29:09
Referee awards a free kick to Costa Rica, close to the touchline, he looks calm and composed, minor observation here would be that the referee has moved towards the touchline with his back to all players

AM at 2014-07-05 21:26:51
Assistant near side offside flag correct, would have liked to have seen him retain the flag and hold his position. A further offside judgement correct again retention of flag would enhance his decision making process

AM at 2014-07-05 21:24:42
Flag from Assistant far side would have enhanced free kick awarded by referee to Holland

AM at 2014-07-05 21:23:27
Good acceleration from the referee seen on a quick break, good save from Costa Rica goalkeeper, assistant nearside in line with 2nd rearmost defender to make offside judgement

AM at 2014-07-05 21:21:21
The referee is adopting a low profile and this is suiting this game so far, he needs to keep his focus and concentration though as one tackle could easily change the tempo of this game

AM at 2014-07-05 21:18:20
Players have so far been showing not only a respectful approach towards each other but also the match officials. At half time I want to have a discussion with you regarding dissent seen at this World Cup and I want you to let us know your thoughts. What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at Info@you-are-the-ref.com

AM at 2014-07-05 21:15:32
Referee in the first 15 minutes is allowing players to play and intervening as and when is necessary.

AM at 2014-07-05 21:14:44
Assistant far side remaining in line with 2nd rearmost Holland defender, good bouncing movement

AM at 2014-07-05 21:13:08
Referee is moving well to cover a quick break from Holland, good viewing angle achieved as play breaks into Costa Rica penalty area

AM at 2014-07-05 21:11:00
Good detection by referee free kick to Costa Rica. Good use of whistle and positive arm signal by referee Irmatov

AM at 2014-07-05 21:09:33
Referee speaking to players grappling prior to corner kick, was the ball in the corner quadrant by Assistant?

AM at 2014-07-05 21:08:20
Assistant near side flagging for offside, would have liked to have seen him retain his position and retain the flag to ensure the correct restart.

AM at 2014-07-05 21:06:37
Assistant far side keeping a good infield view, bouncing and changing flag so as to have it in the hand nearest to the referee.

AM at 2014-07-05 21:04:58
First free kick to Costa Rica No. 3 Holland careless. Referee Irmatov in quickly to clam things and manage.

AM at 2014-07-05 21:03:15
Assistant near side moving towards the goal line to make a goal line judgement, ball in / out.

AM at 2014-07-05 21:01:50
Game kicks off.. Could simulation play a part after the recent admissions by Robben ???

AM at 2014-07-05 20:55:48
As we near kick off this final quarter final tie is sure to be an entertaining game and the biggest game to date for Costa Rica. We wish Match Officials, Players all the very best in this game tonight.

AM at 2014-07-05 20:46:44
Don’t forget to look at Keith Hackett’s excellent Blog for an update. All the latest topics are raised and discussed and are an opportunity for you to raise any questions that you have on your mind. You should take a look at YATR TV and a fascinating CARDS ON THE TABLE interview that Alan Biggs conducted with Bill Webb, Howard’s father. Bill mentions in his interview about Howard that “exceptional things happen to normal people in life” and that Howard still has humility, Integrity and honesty. For what Howard has achieved it has not gone to his head one little bit. How true that is. Watch the video in full it is really worth watching. Howard must be in the frame for the final again. What are your thoughts? who do you think will referee the final? there is also Mark Geiger of the USA he has  also refereed very well in this tournament.
