His refusal to award the penalty to Iran at the start of the second half perhaps summed up his performance, this view was confirmed by another contributor who commented that the referee “did not have the guts to award the penalty”. Maybe this referee won’t get a further opportunity to officiate in this tournament.

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:54:50

The referee has not had the best of games this evening.  His body language and expressions lacked authority.  One contributor described him as being a “Rabbit in the headlights” and perhaps the game was managing him, rather than him managing the game.  From a technical viewpoint his positioning in open-play was poor.

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:54:12

Iran tried to park the bus and the Referee was is the only passenger in a competitive as Messi plays conductor !

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:53:47

Hard luck Iran !!! Messi top class

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:51:40

You have to feel sorry for Iran …

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:49:44

Wow – how can you defend that!!!

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:47:44

Iran look more like scoring than Argentina – or do they ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:42:23

Caution for Argentina #16 for that challenge – another chance to assert authority missed ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:41:29

8 minutes to go – can Iran steal a goal ???

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:35:11

After the World Cup I think some clubs might be considering the employment of the Iran manager ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:34:11

Same problem for the referee – not watching the ball is a basic error, if that had led to an Argentina goal, there would have been real problems

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:31:36

That was much better player management in the caution of Iran #7, but too little too late ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:30:50

When players start nibbling at each other in the challenges, in the interests of game management, the referee needs to find the free kick. In this game, the referee is not doing so!

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:26:06

This referee needs to raise his authority he has to be the leader, not let players control matters

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:24:40

Only 25 minutes left and the referee still hasn’t got hold of the game – it’s almost like he is walking on egg-shells and needs to be decisive

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:23:43

Can anyone tell me what the Assistant Referee near-side was signalling ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:21:02

Excellent penal offence indication by the Assistant Referee

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:19:05

30 minutes to go, will Iran hold out ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:17:23

The predicted key incident we predicted has occurred, time for the referee to raise his profile and be more decisive ……

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:15:46

Wow – the referee has missed a penalty !  Error. but would you have issued a card ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:14:43

Iran 21 still taking to the referee – the caution would have stopped that

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:13:32

Nailed on caution for Iran 21 !! Referee not decisive enough

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:12:01

First yellow card, 40 minutes too late !!!

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:11:30

Has that Iran chance been converted, that would have been interesting !

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:09:52

Iran are playing the same way, did we expect anything else ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:07:12

Our thoughts are that this game is heading for issues with a key incident which will cause the referee problems – let’s see what unfolds ….

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:04:05

More half-time comment “The referee needs at all time to maintain his management of all the players. It s not a practice encouraged by UEFA for the referee to help the player to his feet”

RCT at 2014-06-21 18:02:43

If you were the Assistant Referee or 4th official on this game, would you be offering advice to the referee during the interval ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:57:53

The referee now reviewing his first half performance in his dressing room hopefully will recognise that he needs to tighten up on his control in the second half. The first ten minutes are important to enable him re assert his authority, otherwise he risks a mass confrontation incident

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:55:55

More comments from you “Not the stand out performance of the tournament as opportunities to assert authority have not been taken”.   Keep them coming ……

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:53:12

‘Ian M’ also cites the situation where referees assisting players to their feet is common in Europe, but not in the UK.  Thanks Ian, keep your comments coming

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:51:42

Thank you to ‘Ian M’ for his comment on the referee helping a player to his feet,  Ian believes that this is acceptable, what do you think ? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:48:08

Whilst this observer has a degree of sympathy with the referee as the game is so one-sided, he needs to be more dominating and decisive. The game was crying out for a caution from the first 5 minutes – the players have been given license to carry on offending.

We are also very concerned with the referee’s patrol path. He is fit enough, but his movement selection is poor. Let’s see if he can correct this in the second half.

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:47:35

Caution for Argentina #5 ? Perfect chance to assert authority just before half-time

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:44:41

Were you happy with the player taking the throw-in from inside the technical area ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:43:40

and probably had more touches than him as refs continue to get caught up in play

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:43:05

Ref moves like Dejagga !!!!!!

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:41:46

The player’s did not know that Zabellata had comitted that offence, more decisive please Mr. Referee !!!!

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:40:13

The referee is still too close to play, I wonder if his colleagues are offering his positional advice across the comms systems ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:36:14

It’s time for a caution Mr Referee – Argentina are becoming frustrated, not helped by a missed advantage opportunity

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:33:39

We would have preferred to see the referee ‘boss’ the defensive wall then, there was a player ahead of the spray line

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:31:56

‘Spray-paint’ time – I’ll loving this. Clever these referee’s you know, I haven’t seen one occasion where the ref has had to spray over the penalty area markings! It’s a great aid to control, but not one which is feasible or practical at semi-professional or local level.

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:29:44

In a match of this nature, the referee needs to make sure he takes every opportunity to shine, so far he has not taken them …..

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:27:41

What’s your opinion of the referee helping a player to his feet ?

What are your thoughts? Contact us on Twitter @youaretheref or email us at

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:26:08

Referee’s are not groundsman – the player should have replaced the corner-flag

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:25:12

Important that the far-side Assistant Referee remains ‘focussed’ as he is largely ‘inactive’

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:22:34

The referee should not be getting close to the touchline, he needs to be in the ‘inside left’ channel

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:20:37

The referees are getting ‘ahead’ of play and therefore getting involved with the ball – sometimes they should be sprinting and then ‘applying the brakes’

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:18:54

Poor positional play, referee unable to adjust his position to avoid the ball ….

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:17:37

Would have liked to have seen a positive corner kick indication from the Assistant Referee …..

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:16:13

This must be the most disrupted game so far – Iran’s a time consuming already

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:14:34

Has the referee spotted Iran’s defensive tactics – how does his game plan vary based on this ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:12:18

Good positional work by the referee so far, but we believe he needs a formal sanction soon to calm the game …..

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:10:24

Is he being too tolerant of the early challenges –

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:09:16

Do you think the referee is being tough enough …..

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:05:43

No pattern to the game as yet, it’s not settle down yet

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:02:24

A somewhat disjointed start to the game, a good test for the referee

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:00:58

Interesting first challenge ….

RCT at 2014-06-21 17:00:39

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:58:03

Iran the winners on the ‘national anthem’ competition !!!

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:56:31

Argentina players looking a bit serious at their anthem !!!

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:54:52

Our referee this evening is Milorad Mazic from Serbia

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:54:25

Welcome to Belo Horizonte for Match 28 of the World Cup – Argentina v Iran- Group F.

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:50:44

The Lionel Messi factor is obviously a massive factor in the game, how will Iran combat him ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:48:15

Will Iran ‘park the bus’ as they did in their first fixture v Nigeria, a 0-0 draw which was not exactly the most compelling fixture of this World Cup so far ?

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:42:51

Both teams only had 1 yellow card in their first fixture, will this be repeated this evening – my thoughts are no, this game will probably be a bit more fiery

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:36:57

Both coaches are well known to our UK based viewers.  Iran are managed by Carlos Queiroz, former #2 at Manchester United; the Argentina coach is Alex Sabella, who graced Bramall Lane and Elland Road in the 70’s

RCT at 2014-06-21 16:30:56

Welcome to our coverage here at ‘You Are The Ref’ – 30 minutes to kick off ……
