Glasgow Rangers v Glasgow Celtic

RH at 2017-09-23 14:15:43

The Refereeing talking points in this game were

  • A big game performance from Craig Thomson and his team
  • The Referee keeps to his game plan to demonstrate strong management and impressive Match Control
  • Rangers could have been awarded an early penalty but Celtic showed so much quality today that even if a spot kick had been given it may not have affected the outcome

No doubt that that Craig Thomson demonstrated why this was his 14th Old Firm derby with an impressive display that safely saw this game home. He stuck to his game plan of a box to box patrol path going to the goal line or deep into the penalty area when needed, squeezing play with his nearest Assistant, always staying close to the action ready to move in to calm tempers if things looked like getting heated and Tempo managing key stages of the match. It worked well for him and a good example being the opening goal in the 49th minute where Craig was in an ideal position to confirm that Scott Sinclair had won a corner from which the visitors scored. The cautions were timed to great effect just three in a game of so much significance, which speaks volumes in itself for  his control of this game. Yes the penalty would have made a difference, but to be fair to the Referee it wasn’t the most obvious offence, but should none the less should have been given, but Celtic’s 18 attempts to Rangers 6 tells a story of this game. Both Assistants did well and looked sharp and never let the Referee down. A word also for 4th Official Kevin Clancy who did well in the Technical Area’s today, Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha in particular getting emotional on occasions but to Kevin’s credit things never got out of hand.

Celtic keeper Gordon catches a broadside from Tavernier, he felt it but the challenge was careless with no sanction needed

RH at 2017-09-23 13:42:03

Whilst Craig Thomson has Tempo managed charged moments in the game to maintain his control, he’s stuck to his box to box patrol and always  kept close to action ready to move in quickly to defuse player emotions demonstrating his experience on this fixture!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:37:53

With so much at stake not to mention the wall of noise that must there, the Match Officials must keep focus and not become the talking point here with a loss of concentration!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:35:59

Jack is the late offender again this time, again the Referee picks it up, but a free kick is all that’s needed there

RH at 2017-09-23 13:27:59

The Referee will know that the next goal is important again, if Rangers score the game is well and truly back on, if Celtic score then the home team have a mountain to climb, the pressure still very much on the Match Officials!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:24:44

GOAL!The next goal was so important at this stage of the game and its gone to Celtic through Griffiths!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:23:46

Boyata wrestles MorelasYellow Card to the ground and earns himself a caution, as we say Tempo Refereeing given the important phase of the game we’re in!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:21:12

Both teams making changes this half to keep the pressure on!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:18:21

With Rangers looking to get back into this game the next ten minutes could be crucial.Tempo Refereeing should be used to maintain control!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:16:57

Griffiths with a stupid foul on Windass, just hands Rangers possession!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:15:58

Craig Thomson’s patrol path has been exactly what you would expect in a big pressure game, he’s operated from box to box, going deep to the goal line or squeezing play to his active Assistant when needed, great Refereeing!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:12:56

Rangers strike back and apply pressure winning a corner themselves!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:11:47

The corner that led to the goal just underlining why Referee’s need to get into good penalty area positions when awarding corners and gaol kicks. The Referee positioned himself well to make a correct decision from which Celtic scored from the re-start!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:09:15

GOAL!Rogic breaks the deadlock, 1-0 Celtic!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:08:35

Craig Thomson only metres away to correctly judge that Sinclair had won a corner, good positiong!

RH at 2017-09-23 13:06:42

The second half has commenced!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:58:08

Well as we expected its been a pulsating first half with no quarter asked or given but overall and its only half time of course, the player discipline has been good so far. Although we did see signs that it could boil over at any time as Celtic Captain Scott Brown clashed with Rangers Morelas which Manager Pedro Caixinha didn’t like as the teams came off at half time! Craig Tomson has done well in a game that has ben more even that was predicted as Rangers have applied themselves well against the Scottish Champions. The Referee has used his experience well to manage some sensitive incidents whilst not compromising his overall control. Whilst I liked his 43rd  caution of Morelas, I felt that he should have awarded Rangers a penalty for Simunovic’s 14th minute penalty area challenge on Moreals, but it wasn’t the most obvious miss I’ve seen by a Referee. However what I have been really impressed with has been Craig’s presence of mind to get into advanced viewing positions in the penalty area to enhance his decision making. All to play for in the second half!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:47:37

Half Time

RH at 2017-09-23 12:47:23

A minute of one minute additional time to be played

RH at 2017-09-23 12:46:46

Boyata went off, he didn’t have to unless he was injured from that Reckless Morelas challenge

RH at 2017-09-23 12:44:59

Yellow CardMorelas goes through the back of Boyata and becomes today’s first caution, which also sets a decent threshold on issuing sanctions!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:43:20

Roberts catches McCrorie a bit late but no malice as its only a routine careless challenge

RH at 2017-09-23 12:42:15

Morelas caught offside for he forth time, Assistant Graeme Stewart on the ball each time!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:41:20

We’ve got more great games for you on Refcam in this weekend, join us for;

  • Today                       @ 17.30 Leicester City v Liverpool
  • Tomorrow  @ 16.00   Brighton v Newcastle United
  • Monday     @ 20.00  Arsenal v West Brom

RH at 2017-09-23 12:40:46

Again the Referee goes deep towards the goal line to spot that holding offence by Sinclair on Jack!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:39:18

Craig Thomson again has done well in the final third so far to follow up play and get into good viewing angles and close proximity even if that means squeezing play with his nearest Assistant, good Refereeing!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:37:03

35 minutes gone and no time to draw breath here as the time races by!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:36:10

Tierney goes in hard but gets the ball and collects Candeias but its hard and fair and the Referee rightly allows play to continue

RH at 2017-09-23 12:33:22

Well Rangers are giving as good as they get and the game is more even at this stage than expected, a word to the 4th Official who’s doing a good job with the Rangers manager on a couple of occasions

RH at 2017-09-23 12:30:27

Simunovic and Morelas needs managing, the latest free kick going Morelas’s way, the Referee will need to be vigilant here that the wrestling doesn’t result in a flailing arm!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:27:47

Armstrong grounds Windass, its borderline but the Referee keeps his powder dry by managing it with a warning, fair enough!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:26:04

Tierney fells Morelas in front of Assistant Stewart who flags the free kick

RH at 2017-09-23 12:25:13

Celtic win a fortuitous corner but the Officials get out of jail as Rangers counter attack and apply pressure!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:23:59

A messy free kick scene there as both Dorans and Morelas get in the way of Armstrong, the Referee rightly manages it!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:22:34

Lustic flattened by Morelas, obvious free kick to Celtic

RH at 2017-09-23 12:20:41

Also worth noting I agree with the Celtic penalty appeal as I felt it was more ball to hand!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:15:55

Simunovic makes a penalty area challenge and is fortunate not to concede a spot kick as he makes a hurdle for the Rangers attacker

RH at 2017-09-23 12:13:08

Assistant Alan Mulvanny on the ball to signal Lee Griffiths offside as he entered the action

RH at 2017-09-23 12:12:00

Worth noting as we get a break in the action that the Referee followed up to good effect with a quiet word to Rangers Manager Pedro Caixinha after that half way line incident and also how well he did to follow through to the goal line as the near side Assistant’s view would have obstructed as the Rogic attempted to strike when that goal kick was warded

RH at 2017-09-23 12:08:56

Referee Craig Thomoson follows through onto the goal line to ensure that he correctly judges that Rogic got the last touch, goal kick Rangers!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:06:23

Jack pushes Roberts for the second free kick of the game, as we expected a high tempo start!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:05:18

Lustic takes out both Windass and Rangers manager  Pedro Caixinha with a careless challenge!

RH at 2017-09-23 12:02:26

If you are watching the game on TV, Graeme Stewart is operating on the far side and the other Assistant Alan Mulvanny is running the nearside touch line.

RH at 2017-09-23 12:00:38

Our match Referee Craig Thomson gets us underway!

RH at 2017-09-23 11:58:16

The teams and Match Officials have entered the field of play!

RH at 2017-09-23 11:53:19

Craig Thomson is widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most experienced Referees and he has been officiating since 1988. He originates from Paisley, Renfrewshire, 45 years old and is by profession a Solicitor specialising in Construction Law. He has been taking charge of Scottish Premier League matches since 2002 and has been a FIFA Referee since 2003.

This will be the 14th time Thomson will have taken charge of a match between Glasgow’s great rivals. Last season he refereed the Scottish League Cup semi-final between the two sides and was criticised by fans of both sides after disallowing a Celtic goal for a push and booking Rangers striker Barrie McKay for simulation after he fell in the box.

He’s been in charge of seven games so far this season, issuing 28 yellow cards and six reds including two in last Saturday’s Dunfermline verses St Mirren Championship match.
